Chapter 3 - Who's Knocking?

"Ugh, really? On a weekend?"

Lexo tossed his controller down and approached the TV. The screen displayed a network disconnection issue, and he seemed to be in the middle of a game. He looked behind the television to make sure his console was wired up properly to the Ethernet in his wall, and it was, so there should be no issues, right?

"... This school's internet is gonna really piss me off."

With a heavy sigh, he switched off the tv and scanned his room for a T-shirt that would be really quick and easy to throw on. His tired eyes lock on to an oversized tee hanging softly over the edge of his twin sized mattress. Visibly, it wasn't dirty. So, it was probably his best option until he did laundry on Monday. He grabbed the shirt and slipped it over his messy blonde hair, and sniffed a few times to make sure it wasn't musty. Afterwards, he checked himself over in the mirror to make sure he was presentable. Aside from his tired blue eyes and messy head of hair, nothing really stood out as unusual. So, he tossed water over his face and continued on. His baggy, loose fitting clothing covers up his slim tall build. Like a basketball player in a super sized jersey. Lexo left his dorm.

"Alright, time to head to the source. . ."

Gemini Lecky made her way down the halls of Lumin University, headed straight towards the administration.

"Pfff this better be interesting…"

She tapped on the administration office's door. After just a moment an older woman answered.

"Oh, sorry. We're not helping students with anything right now. You'll have to come back another time."

"Oh, no I'm here for the computer issue."

"You? Well alright come on in."

The woman led Gem into the office and into a room with a pile of completely bricked laptops.

"Geez what happened here?"

A man piped up.

"Susan shared a bad link!"

Another woman, probably Susan, retorted.

"I was just sending along Kevin's notice!"

A flurry of accusations began being thrown about the room. Gemini sighed. She ignored the bickering and got to work fiddling with the devices. After about twenty minutes all the laptops were up again.

"It was a spam email full of malware that force-ran a bunch of programs and froze them all. Don't open messages from people you don't know or click any links you don't recognize and you shouldn't have this problem again."

The administration thanked her and she made her leave with a coffee shop gift card as a thank you. Just then, the office received another visitor. This time, it was a student, knocking gently on the door... Just loud enough so that anyone paying attention could hear, but quiet enough that it could go unnoticed should conversation be in progress.

"... Hopefully... They don't answer... and I can just complain online... Wait. How could I do that without wifi?"

Gemini opens the door to the office as she's leaving and walks right into him, her face fully colliding with his chest. A strange yelp escapes her mouth and she drops the gift card she was holding.

"HUH!?"

Lexo is startled by the sudden shout. He quite frankly didn't even see her come out of the door, due to her being almost an entire two feet shorter than him. He backs up as his body jolts, and notices the poor girl.

"Oh- I'm so sorry, are you alright?"

He bends down to reach for the gift card she had dropped.

"Oh yeah I'm fine. No worries, big guy."

She bends down at the same time to retrieve her card, and their heads collide as they both reach for it. Immediately, Lex jerks his head back, while laying a hand over his hair.

"Ouh-! My bad, my bad..."

He dismissively waves his hand as he tries to ease the awkward atmosphere with a subtle chuckle. Though, their heads bumping together made him realize something...

"... You have... Cat ears?"

"Don't worry about it. You were just trying to be nice."

She rubs her head where they bumped together.

"Oh yeah, the ears. They're real despite what the internet keeps trying to say. I got tails too."

Said tails curl around her body, one black one white, to match her hair.

"Oh!"

He had no idea what to say. Honestly, people like her weren't too rare around here.. Just.. a cat girl? With two tails?

"... Well, it's not the strangest thing I've seen."

He raises a brow in curiosity.

"Hold on, haven't I seen you around here before?"

"Probably. They call me in for tech issues pretty regularly."

"Wait, that's perfect!"

He holds his hands out like he's trying to explain something massive. For the first time, he had actual energy in his eyes for a social interaction.

"My wifi has been acting up since the semester started, do you have any idea what could be causing that??"

"There are like, a lot of things that could be causing that. I'd need a little more info. I could come take a look at it, if you want."

She had a hand on her hip. Her ears were forward and attentive.

"Oh, you mean like... Actually come in? And look at it... in my room?"

He readjusts his posture, now a bit awkward once more.

"Uhm. To be honest, I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with the school's network. I am plugging in directly to Ethernet, after all..."

"There are still a lot of things that could go wrong with Ethernet. The internet is working fine on the faculty laptops. What category is your Ethernet cable?"

"Uh... Good question."

He tries to think for a bit on whether or not he knows.

"If it's CAT 5 or lower then it's probably throttling your internet speed and causing connectivity issues for like any modern programs you're trying to run."

"Erm, and how would I be able to tell which 'Cat' it is?"

He sighs.

"Actually, maybe it's better if you do take a look at it."

"For sure. Lead the way."

He turns to walk toward the south wing of campus, hoping she'll follow. She follows him closely. Her legs move much faster than his to keep up.
