Chapter 2 - Neglect.

**The Assembly hall, Maryland High School.**

As Mrs. Rhodes, the school principal, concluded her resumption speech delivered to the students and teachers of Maryland High School, everyone gave her a round of applause.

Now, it was time for the Senior Prefect boy and girl to give the closing speech for the assembly meeting. Gosh! Akin spoke too much: "As we resume into this great citadel of knowledge for the new term, I advise that all students remain perspicaciousand harness our absolute potentials to achieve phenomenal success. We have to work assiduously towards our goals and ensure we hit the mark and meet expectations …" Akin said.

At this point, students had stopped listening. Even teachers would have been tired of such a boring speech. "So much unnecessary use of grammar." Seun thought.

Soon, the assembly came to an end as Chinenye, the Senior Prefect girl, gave the closing prayer and dismissed everyone. The SS2 girls were reluctant to say Amen to her prayers. They obviously did not like her very much. Some thought she was a hypocrite, others thought she was proud but Seun had nothing against her. In fact, these days, Seun admired her and vice versa although Tomi did not like the idea.

**SS2A Classroom, Maryland High School.**

It was now the fourth period of seven, finally they were getting somewhere. The break was in 15 minutes and would last 40minutes. The time was looking slower today. Seun sat close to the window and was looking out. She had no idea what this man was saying, something about electromagnetic waves, she really just wanted to sleep. She didn't get enough rest last night anyway.

"…Infrared radiation, Ultraviolet rays, X-rays, Gamma rays." Aaliyah said.

"…Wow, you see, if everyone of you could just be like Grace and Aaliyah, all of you will pass your final exams next year, your seniors will be done with theirs soon and your turn will come. Please don't dissapoint me, your set has been the worst set I've taught in this school so far and I've been here for seven good years! Dayo Williams, I taught Dare, your brother. He is such a good boy and you should follow his footsteps. If I didn't handle him well, he wouldn't be where he is today. Anyway! a round of applause for Aaliyah please. Well done!" Mr Ajayi, the Physics teacher said.

Everyone clapped and chuckled at Mr Ajayi's waffling, he wouldn't stop comparing them to the previous sets especially their older siblings. Seun reluctantly did too while she rolled her eyes, she didn't understand what the hype was about. All Aaliyah did was mention the 7 types of electromagnetic waves.

Come on! Anyone and everyone would know that, well, maybe not Samuel but everyone else would, She was sure. 5 minutes to the end of the class, while Seun was thinking about last night, Mr Ajayi called her name. She rolled her eyes again. She really didn't like this man and the feeling was clearly mutual.

"You, Madam! Are you even paying attention at all? Adetola or what's your name again? What's the formula for calculating speed relating to the properties of electromagnetic waves and tell me the value for the speed of light!!"

Was this man insane? She was amused. Now, she was sure that this man definitely hated her. She wanted to cry and laugh at the same time. "Sir, come again?" She said. Just to annoy him. She knew the answer. "Grace, can you repeat the question to our madam here?" Mr. Ajayi said.

"Nevermind sir, I remember the question now. The value of the speed of light is meter per second, sorry, c equals three times 10exponent8 in meter per second and speed is the frequency of a wave multiplied by its wavelength also in meter per second, I think." Seun knew she was right. Oh, she knew. But for 'aura' she said "she thinks".

Everyone applauded Seun even before the teacher could say anything all he said was "That's okay." They solved one question using the formula that Seun had gracefully shared with the class and it was finally over. Dayo, the timekeeper rang the bell and they all knew it was break time. Mr. Ajayi hesitated to leave but the students left him no choice as they weren't paying attention anymore. After giving them load of assignments that seemed much more complex than the question they had just treated in class, he finally left. The time was now 12:24pm.

Seun and Tomi stepped out of the class to get snacks from the school's mini mart and on their way there, they saw the final year boys leaving their classroom. Well, some of them. Chris and Emmanuel walked side by side. Chris was an averaged height, fine young man. As he walked towards the girls, his dark, rich skin glowed warmly in the sun and his expressive eyes sparkled with warmth. A bright smile played on his lips as he chatted with Emmanuel. He carried himself with so much confidence. Seun's heart began to race and she acted like she didn't notice the boys who had just walked past them without saying a word.

Disappointment was written all over her face. She was up until 3:00am talking to this handsome masterpiece of a creation and he just strode by her like they had never spoken before. Tomi asked what was wrong but Seun said it was nothing and they went on to get snacks. Upon their arrival at the mini mart, they met Matthew, who looked like he had been watching them from a distance. He was another good looking final year student. He looked at the girls and requested to speak to Seun for a second. They stepped away from the mini mart and went for a short stroll.

"Hi, Seun. How are you doing?" Matthew said. "I'm good, you? You smell very nice." Seun replied. "Oh, thank you for the compliment. I try. Hmm, you look very beautiful today. I hope those small boys in your class haven't been disturbing you." Matthew was now making eye contact which made Seun feel very uncomfortable. "So I'm not beautiful on other days?" And no, I don't have anything to do with my mates, I like more mature people." Seun said. "Mature men, you mean? Well, I have to go now. I'll get your number from Nenye and text you, please reply. Fine shyt."

Before Seun got a chance to reply, Matthew dashed off. She returned to her friend and continued her daily school routine. What a long, boring day it was!
