Chapter 60 - Declaration of Independence

Alan had been analyzing how the hordes attacked, and he had to admit that, besides evolving, they adapt to the way humans fight.

The way they tricked General Shelton a few weeks ago worked to take down a large base in the central zones of the resistance.

That strike had disorganized the army, which made it easier for the infected to land a pretty hard blow.

Alan then thought that if things were like that in Texas, there wouldn't be much difference in other states in the country. This cornered FEDRA into directly using weapons of mass destruction without any restraint.

In that case, the resistance bases in the most populated cities were too dangerous.

"Alright, understood, prepare yourselves." Alan knew that FEDRA's most recent attacks had caused chaos on the front lines, so the plan was to fall back today.

Once all the soldiers under Alan's command took up their defense positions, he moved the others to the mess halls to eat.

The civilians were in the warehouses next to the helicopter station. Meanwhile, the artillery was under the command of Alan's trusted men, who waited for things to calm down.

"Do you have control over this?" John looked at Dominic as they went down to the lowest level, where the patients were.

"Under FEDRA's directives, we will never control anything. So we will be patient and help those who oppose them."

In the command room, Major Jackson didn't feel anything, but from the moment he arrived at the base, he knew everyone despised him. Being someone under FEDRA's command at a base that went against the order made him a soldier with innocent blood on his hands.

Even though they had done things wrong, who really did the right thing in a situation like this?

Refugee warehouses

Looking around, there weren't large groups of people. This changed things a bit for Alan's upcoming plans to increase his influence.

"Zz... We've started controlling the outer zones; all trusted soldiers are under our command."

"What is this?"

John looked at all the people in the cages and couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.

"The survivors who aren't sick will be moved to other bases. What we know is that FEDRA will start large-scale operations, and that will affect the front line of defense. I've already sent orders for the other bases to fall back—we're the last post at the front."

"So we're the last ones."

"Yes." When Alan's group arrived at the warehouse, he looked at everyone's worried faces and said, "All of you will be moved to a safer base today. We're analyzing the infected zones and hope that by the end of this year we can take control of islands off the Texas coast to ensure no infected can attack us."

Everyone stood up when they heard they were going to be freed.

"I would recommend you stay here a little longer until a plan is made to get you out of here by helicopter. The situation is much more complex than you think. Those who decided to reduce the masses, to kill us, have surely made a bad decision, and history will condemn them."

Alan slightly raised his hands and said, "If you trust me, I'll tell you everything that hasn't been told to you. You'll know where we're headed and have the chance to follow us or go your own way."

"Tell us in simple words, what's going on with FEDRA?"

Hearing that question, Alan answered simply, "The collapse of the world has begun. If you wait and trust me, you'll know all the details. Now, we have decided to go against FEDRA. My priority is your safety."

No one around showed signs of agitation; many eyes waited because at that moment, in the distance, a large group of armed soldiers was approaching.

"Colonel, what the hell are you doing?"

Alan smiled a little and thought, "Just in time."
