Chapter 137 - The Hunger of Dragons

"Grrr…"

I flinched at the guttural growl that tore through the palace walls, vibrating against my ears as though it sought to awaken something slumbering inside me.

Letting out a long breath, I set the quill aside and pressed my fingers gently to my temple.

"They still refuse to eat?"

The servant who had been tasked with tending to the dragons stood before me, reporting on their condition with a troubled look.

For two days now, I had deliberately avoided visiting them, partly out of shame for what I had done, and partly for fear that they would once again stir something buried too deeply within my body.

"Yes, Your Highness," the servant replied, his voice hesitant beneath my restless gaze. "No matter what we bring them, they insist it is not what they crave."

A shiver ran down my spine at his words. I already knew the truth. What could sate their hunger was not food.

"Very well. Keep watching over them." I flicked my hand, dismissing him.
