Xavier and Xander hovered in the air, dipping and surging as if they still hadn't mastered the weight and rhythm of their dragon bodies. My heart followed their every rise and fall, a wild pendulum swinging like a roller coaster gone rogue.

Cassian pulled me back toward him, shielding me from the two creatures he had only ever read about in the faded pages of ancient legends.
"It's fine." My voice, hoarse from shouting too many times, trembled as I rushed to reassure him. "They won't hurt us."
He looked at me with suspicion, as if demanding to know how I could possibly be so sure.
I didn't answer. My gaze turned to Xavier and Xander, both of them beating their wings in a clumsy rhythm, closing the distance toward me like fledgling birds on their first flight.
After all the blood and tears that had just been shed, was this their idea of comforting my frayed nerves—by offering me this ridiculous, almost comical sight?
