Axel kept running. He was fast, pushing his body hard, but the sound was already catching up to him. Soon, he could clearly hear the distinct footsteps behind him.
He took a quick look around.
His eyes landed on a patch of the forest to his right. It was a mess—trees grew closer together, the undergrowth was thick and knotted, and the whole area looked denser than the path they were on. His mind instantly decided this was the perfect spot. It would be too difficult for their pursuers to navigate and track them if they dove in and hid there.
Axel immediately turned back toward the cab driver. He quickly pointed toward that messy, dense part of the forest, then made a decisive hand motion, signaling that they needed to hide there. The cab driver nodded his head right away, showing he understood Axel's sign.
