After picking Jaimie up from school, Axel decided they'd stop by the grocery store to grab a few things for dinner. It wasn't unusual—Axel cooked often—but this time felt different. Maybe because Jaimie was there, trailing beside him with a bounce in his step, eyes darting from one snack shelf to another like he'd just entered a candy-coated wonderland.
Axel filled the cart with the essentials—vegetables, meat, some spices he was running low on—but Jaimie had other priorities. One by one, the little boy snuck candy bars and lollipops into the cart when Axel wasn't looking. When Axel finally caught on, Jaimie gave him a sheepish grin, clutching a bag of rainbow jelly beans like it was treasure. Axel rolled his eyes but chuckled, deciding to let it slide.
