Chapter 19 - Chapter 8: Crossroads of Fate (Part 2)

Just intervene already.

Duncan's sudden interruption undoubtedly made both of them fall silent for a moment.

In the end, it was the Demon Hunter who first let go of his hand on the sword hilt. He fixed his gaze on the witch opposite him and calmly said, "I am no longer serving the Inquisition Court."

"Some of the Witch Hunters have separated from the court."

"We are Demon Hunters, free to serve the Lord, eliminating the threat of demons for humanity."

This Demon Hunter held a very high position in the church, possessing the authority to judge other Archbishops directly in the name of faith.

In the omniscient perspective.

The mark of the Demon Hunter reverted back to a neutral yellow; his mark was never that obviously hostile red.

By his claim, the Demon Hunter differs from the church's Witch Hunters, not belonging to the court, not intending to meddle in the heretical disputes, and more focused on dealing with demons that threaten ordinary people. They are likely from the various strange creatures that have survived since the Mythical Era, after all, he might be the only Dragon Slayer of this age.

The witch seemed somewhat skeptical in her expression.

The Demon Hunter didn't care, cast a glance at the trembling Forest Demoness under the shadow of the tree, before turning around and leaving the woods.

He found Crow Queen Triss just to state his position.

From today on, he and his followers have nothing to do with the Inquisition Court, as they will be independent of the church and focus on confronting those evil creatures that truly threaten mortals.

Demon Hunter Brotherhood.

Since the 'Edict of Milan' was issued, the church is no longer the same church in his eyes.

Power.

The power of the church is rapidly expanding, they've even proposed the concept of a 'Pope State'.

Duncan watched the Demon Hunter walk away.

The witch beside him remained still; he, too, put down his Northern Land combat bow, after all, the departing figure was a true Demon Hunter, famed for dragon-slaying—it's possible he may become the progenitor of Demon Hunters in this world someday.

A breeze gently blew through.

The Forest Demoness had quietly disappeared, and Crow Queen Triss gazed at Duncan before softly saying, "Did you know all along?"

Duncan nodded slightly and said, "Yes."

Crow Queen Triss's expression was slightly puzzled: "When did you realize?"

Duncan thought for a moment and said, "When I was up against the Barbarian deserters, I could sense an arrow shot towards me but it suddenly veered off."

"Later, when fighting with the Rangers, I was able to fully confirm it."

Crow Queen Triss showed an expression of enlightenment and softly said, "You have a strong spirituality, the instincts of a warrior."

Duncan put the arrow back into the quiver and calmly said, "On our way, you suddenly asked about Bulan Village."

"I remembered the stories the elders told me when I was young, legends about the other side of the mountains, at the heart of a dense forest, there is a treehouse where a forest fairy lives. She once healed an injured, lost hunter and took him out of the primeval woods."

The witch's eyes glimmered slightly; she gazed at Duncan before slowly saying, "Did you help me because of that?"

Duncan nodded.

The two walked towards the edge of the forest. The witch put her mask back on and suddenly asked, "How much did you hear?"

In the omniscient perspective.

The target was still a blue-marked unit; Duncan calmly said, "I heard almost everything."

The witch was silent for a moment before saying, "Don't tell anyone else."

Duncan nodded.

As they stepped out of the woods, Crow Queen Triss watched Duncan's back; this man's five senses were extremely keen, far surpassing the range of ordinary people, and his combat skills improved rapidly. Just in the span of one battle, he became adept at horseback riding and mounted archery. Even she was amazed by such talent, inevitably thinking of the human heroes of the Mythical Era.

Crow Queen Triss seemed somewhat hesitant and finally spoke, "What are you planning to do next?"

Duncan stood at the inn's entrance, thought for a while, and said, "I don't know."

"Taking one step at a time."

"In these times, it's best to find a way to gain a foothold."

The witch seemed intrigued and softly said, "Would you like to go to Britannia with me first?"

Duncan appeared to be in thought.

He said deeply, "What for on Great Britain?"

Crow Queen Triss slowly said, "To visit another wizard."

Hmm?

Another wizard? Great Britain?

It seemed Duncan had a thought and asked, "Who?"

Crow Queen Triss said with great respect, "Merlin, one of the greatest wizards in the world today!"

Merlin?!

Turns out, I've arrived at an era close to the end of the mythologic period.

What about King Arthur?

He seems to be a figure from around the 5th century, after the fall of the Roman Empire; the threat of the barbarian crisis spread to England, during which a branch of the Germanic people, the Saxons, massively invaded, and they constitute the main population of today's Britain.

King Arthur was a Celtic, represented by the Irish, Scottish, and Welsh. In the ancient myths of Britain, with Merlin's help, King Arthur repeatedly repelled the Saxon invasions.

But ultimately, the Saxons did conquer and rule Great Britain.

At this time, whether King Arthur is born or not is unknown, but Merlin should already be active, enjoying great renown in the world of supernatural powers.

In legend.

Merlin was a Cambyon (half-human, half-demon), born from the union of an Incubus and a human woman. The demonic lineage passed onto Merlin supernatural powers and an intelligence surpassing mortals. [Note: Enchanting Demon's origin form, alluring men and bending them to its will, is the well-known Nightmare Boggart, whereas the male counterpart is the Incubus, a demon that preys on women and longs to give birth to half-human, half-demon Cambyons.]
