Chapter 10 - something's coming

I didn't ask her what she meant right away.

Because the way she said it — like she wasn't just warning me, but scared of saying too much — made me hesitate.

Like there was something she wasn't saying.

I glanced down the stairwell. No one else was around, but I still dropped my voice.

"What kind of something?"

Ava didn't answer at first. She just kept looking out the window like she was waiting for something to happen out there.

Then she said, "It started a few months ago. Small things. Like I'd feel this pressure in my chest before someone got hurt. Or get a weird taste in my mouth before something bad happened."

She turned to me. "You ever get that? Not a vision. Just… a feeling?"

I nodded slowly. "Yeah. Sometimes."

"Well," she said, "lately, it's been different."

"How?"

She looked back out the window. "The feelings are stronger. Longer. And they're not just about me anymore."

I frowned. "What do you mean?"

She hesitated again. Then said, "Last week, I woke up with this headache I couldn't shake. Felt like my whole body was buzzing. I knew something was going to happen. I just didn't know what."

Her voice dropped lower. "That night, there was a car crash near my house. My neighbor was driving."

I didn't say anything.

She turned back to me. "And yesterday, when you saw me by my locker? That wasn't random."

I blinked. "What do you mean?"

"I had the feeling again. Worse than before. Like something was about to go wrong."

She took a breath. "And then I saw you watching me."

I swallowed hard.

"You think I'm part of it?" I asked.

She shook her head. "No. But I think you're connected to whatever's happening."

I stared at her.

Connected?

To what?

Before I could ask, the bell rang.

Footsteps echoed from the hallway above us.

Ava stiffened. "I have to go."

She started walking past me, then paused.

"If you really see things like you say you do," she said quietly, "then start paying attention to the ones you don't understand."

Then she disappeared down the hall.

Left me standing there, heart pounding.

Because as she walked away…

I got another flash.

Not of her.

Not of me.

But of Lena.

Standing alone in the school courtyard.

Watching us both.
