Chapter 11 - Grim situation

"They're coordinating," Gabriel said, his senses on high alert. "They've probably got patrols looking for two people matching our description."

"Where do we go?" Lucy asked, her eyes darting around nervously.

"Not the train, not the bus, not the ferry terminal," he listed. "They'll be watching those. We need something unofficial. A freight boat? A private plane?"

"I... I know someone," Lucy said hesitantly. "My cousin. He runs a small fishing boat out of the old harbour. Doesn't ask questions. For the right price."

Gabriel looked at her. "Can you trust him?"

"As much as anyone in this city," she replied with a wry twist of her lips. "He owes me a favour. A big one."

"Okay," Gabriel decided. "The old harbour it is. Where is it?"

"A few miles across the city," she said. "We can't walk. Taxis are out. We need wheels."

Suddenly, the sound of a car engine, slow and purposeful, entered the alley. A dark sedan with shaded windows was creeping down the narrow street adjacent to the alley entrance. Their pursuers weren't just on foot anymore.

"Move!" Gabriel hissed, grabbing Lucy's arm again.

They sprinted deeper into the alley, which thankfully opened onto a slightly busier street on the other side. A few cars were parked along the curb.

"Can you hotwire?" Lucy asked, surprisingly calmly.

Gabriel grinned, a flash of humour in the grim situation. "Can you run interference?"

"Try me."
