Kiah slowly blinked her eyes open, that familiar wall she'd been staring at for the past two weeks coming into focus. For a moment, she just lay there, then let out a groan as exhaustion crashed over her like a wave.
"You're awake."
She turned her head toward the window, where Emiko sat bathed in afternoon light, her dark blue hair gleaming against the sun.
"Fortunately," Kiah muttered, forcing herself uptight despite her body's protest's. She rubbed her forehead. "How long was I out?"
"Do you remember what happened?"
"How could I forget?"
Kiah doubted she ever would. That night, death had brushed so close it left a chill deep in her bones. It was too traumatic to disregard.
It was a miracle she was still breathing at all. Without Novaris's amazing biotech, she'd be long gone.
