Chapter 55 - Shadows At The Door

Once again, Kiah found herself on the familiar rooftop after completing her rounds, scouting the area.

The routine was becoming monotonous, but its calming effect remained. She wasn't about to complain about the rare peace it gave her, not when moments like this were so scarce. She wasn't ungrateful.

This time, Kiah tried to keep her angry inner monologue to herself so as not to disturb the resident.

But her ears wiggled as muffled voices drifted up from the house she'd perched on. Strange. It was almost eleven, and most homes had gone silent by now.

Then she remembered: the woman who lived here mentioned she had a baby. Maybe the child had woken and needed soothing.

'It isn't easy to take care of a child in a post-apocalyptic world. These mothers have my respect,' she thought with a sigh.

Kiah tried to tune out the noise and focus on the street below. But just as her gaze settled, Anwyll's voice crackled through the chip.

"Any news?"

"None," she replied.
