The smell of freshly cooked rice and chicken stew travelled through the house like a hurricane.
Kiah's nose twitched. Her eyes snapped open.
Bright sunlight poured into the room as the afternoon sun hung high in the sky. Through the window, the sounds of chatter, animals, and clanging tools drifted in. The world was already wide awake.
Next to her bed, Naya groaned and sat up slowly, rubbing her eyes. Somehow, her hair remained flawless, like she hadn't just rolled out of bed.
"Something smells good."
"I think Mrs. Dia is in the kitchen again," Kiah muttered, still blinking.
"I'm starving."
"Me too."
Dragging their feet like zombies, the two girls shuffled down to the sitting room. As they arrived, Emiko stepped out of the kitchen, balancing a big pot and stacks of plates. Behind her was Anwyll, who carried another one.
He dropped his pot on the table with a soft thud, then looked up.
"You guys are finally awake." He said.
