Tatooine...
"Master Jedi, are you sure that this junkyard would have the parts we need?" the maid asked Qui-Gon Jinn.
Jinn couldn't help but frown at the maid. He was content with going on his own to check for the ship parts required to repair the ship, so that they could return to Coruscant.
First Jar-Jar Binks followed him. Jar-Jar belonged to an aquatic race. It should be horrible even if they were in a forest, much less a desert planet like this, and that too with twin suns.
The troublemaker is already a burden, but then the queen sent the maid to follow him.
He is a very patient man, but with Jar-Jar's antics, he was already losing his patience bit by bit.
It was supposed to be just a diplomatic meeting. It was supposed to be simple, but he had already lost two people under his guard when the Federation scum blasted the ship that brought them to Naboo.
Though the negotiations had failed, even before they started, he wanted to make something out of the chaos, and that was to protect the Queen of Naboo. As long as he could deliver her to the capital, he felt the deaths of those two pilots would have some purpose.
As a Jedi, he always felt that there was no need for unnecessary deaths. If someone died, then as long as they fulfilled a purpose, it wouldn't be all bad, but the ship they escaped in from Naboo was shot, making it difficult for them to reach the capital.
They had to land on a planet nearby, where the Trade Federation wouldn't have many contacts to cause them trouble.
Who would think that the Queen and two Jedi willfully entered the Hutt Space?
No one.
So, the Jedi felt that Tatooine was the best chance for them to find some parts to repair the ship and be good enough to reach Coruscant.
It's a tall order. It won't be easy to find spare parts for the ship, but now he has to babysit Jar-Jar and the maid while looking for those parts. It was too much, mainly because of Jar-Jar, who constantly finds himself in trouble.
They searched a few shops before they came to a shop, Watto's Junkyard.
---
"Good day to you. Welcome to Watto's Junkyard. What are you looking for?" Watto flew over and greeted the three as they entered the shop, along with R2-D2.
"I need parts for J-type 327 Nubian", Jinn stated.
"Yes, yes, Nubian, we have lots of that", Watto said, then he turned around and shouted in his language, "Boy, get in here".
"My Droid has a readout of what we need", Jinn spoke, as a boy entered the shop from the other side.
The boy and Watto argued in some alien language.
After that, Watto took Jinn and the Droid to the yard, where the parts were present.
Watto asked Jinn how they were going to pay for the parts, as he took him and the droid to the parts they needed. Jinn replied that he has twenty thousand Republic Credits, but in Hutt Space, they are worth nothing. They use Huttese Credits, which are three in total: Wupiupi, Trugut, and Pegat.
Among the three, Pegat is the largest denomination.
The ratio is 64:4:1.
Either that or one had to barter, that's the only way to do business in Hutt Space, at least on Tatooine. Maybe on Nar Shadda, Republic Credits may be exchanged, but not on this desert planet.
"I don't have anything, but the credits do fine", Jinn spoke as he waved his hand.
"No, they won't".
"The credits do fine", Jinn waved his hand again, thinking the first time he didn't do it right.
"No, they won't", Watto stated, "Do you think you are a Jedi, waving your hand like that? I am a Toydarian. Jedi tricks don't work on me, only money".
"Hmm, am I becoming dumb?" Jinn thought to himself.
He was a knowledgeable and wise Jedi, but he forgot that the Mind tricks won't work on Toydarians. Why did he even try to use the Jedi mind trick on Watto? He has no idea.
"Maybe Jar-Jar's stupidity was rubbing off on me", he thought for a second.
---
As Jinn and Watto were busy, the boy, who showed his rizz to the maid.
"Are you an angel?" he asked her.
Calling her an angel as their starting conversation was more than enough for the girl to put the boy in a good position.
It was then that the maid found out that the boy, Anakin, was a slave.
On Naboo, even though there were problems, there were no slaves. So, she didn't even know that slaves existed, especially with strict laws that forbade slavery.
If he were any other girl, they might have been horrified, but she understood things that others don't. Though there are laws, not everyone follows them. Even the ones who live in the republic, much less someone outside republic's influence.
---
"No money, no deal", Watto's words brought back Jinn from his thoughts.
He smiled at Watto and walked away, calling the maid and Jar-Jar to follow him as they left the shop.
