Chapter 11 - Please, Marry Ran

Chapter 11: Please, Marry Ran

"That's…"

'Higashino Makoto?'

Conan's eyes went wide, and he immediately sensed something was very wrong.

'Ran—with Higashino Makoto?'

Surely they couldn't be…

'No.'

'There's no way.'

He kept telling himself that, over and over.

"Hello, sir!"

"My name is Higashino Makoto—I'm Ran's classmate, and her boyfriend."

"We're seeing each other, with marriage as our goal."

Makoto took her hand and said it plainly, without a trace of hesitation.

"Boom!"

In an instant, it was as though a nuclear bomb had gone off.

The entire Mouri Detective Agency—the whole room—went dead silent, everyone frozen in place.

"M-m-marriage as your—?!"

"Dating?!"

"Boyfriend?!"

Mouri Kogoro, Conan, and Professor Agasa—all three stood there blank-faced and completely blindsided.

"Makoto, keep your voice down!"

Ran dropped her head, face red, squirming with embarrassment.

"I mean every word."

"So I'm willing to say it in front of the whole world—that we're together."

Makoto held her hand firmly, his gaze steady, his voice full of conviction.

"Mm."

Ran nodded.

Shy and radiant all at once—she looked every bit like a blissful newlywed bride.

"I object!"

Conan was the first to throw up his hand and shout.

Even Kogoro was caught off guard—whatever he'd been about to say got swallowed back down.

Every eye in the room turned to the small boy in the little suit.

"Why do we need your approval?"

"Who even are you?"

Ran shot him a look.

If he weren't so young, she'd have shown him exactly what a Kanto Tournament champion could do.

"I—I…"

Conan looked down at his short legs, dangling above the floor, and suddenly had nothing to say.

'Right. Who am I, exactly?'

'Right now, I'm not Kudo Shinichi, the great high school detective—I'm just some ordinary elementary schooler named Edogawa Conan.'

'Shinichi!'

Professor Agasa made faces at him, eyebrows working furiously.

"I'm Edogawa Conan—and I'm a detective!"

"Thud!"

Conan jumped down from the sofa, completely in earnest.

"A detective?"

"You?"

"Hahaha… a detective—y-you're a detective too?!"

Kogoro blinked, then doubled over laughing, clutching his stomach.

"And?"

"Little detective, what does who I date have to do with you?"

"Why do we need your approval?"

Ran kept her face flat and pressed on.

Same face, same attitude—and another self-proclaimed detective, on top of it all.

He was practically identical to that reasoning idiot.

And right now, that was the exact type she hated most.

Too scared to say it, too scared to do anything—not a shred of care or effort.

While someone else had the guts to say it, the guts to act—someone who actually cared.

And now he was getting jealous again, objecting again.

On what grounds?

"I—I…"

"Shinichi-niisan used to tell me that Ran-neechan and Shinichi-niisan were childhood sweethearts."

"I just…"

"I just want you two to be together!"

Conan poked at his fingers, looking every bit the wronged little boy, and pulled off some on-the-spot celebrity-kid acting.

"You know Shinichi?"

Ran was mildly surprised.

"Oh—it—it's like this."

"This boy is Edogawa Conan—he's the child of a relative of mine."

"Because, well… you see…"

"I live right next door to Shinichi's place, so whenever he came over, Conan would play with Shinichi all the time."

"Haha… something like that!"

Professor Agasa gave a sheepish laugh and hurried to smooth things over.

"Get out of here!"

"Kids should be drinking their milk—stay out of grown-up business!"

"Thud!"

Kogoro set a glass of milk down in front of Conan with a firm thunk and waved him off impatiently.

But his eyes snapped straight to Higashino Makoto.

Mouri Kogoro: "You're…"

"Higashino Makoto!"

Makoto jumped right in, pulling out his phone.

He typed his name out on the screen.

"Higashino Makoto!"

"Ran's classmate?"

Kogoro leaned in close, looking him over like a suspect—top to bottom, head to toe—combing for anything suspicious.

"That's right—I transferred to Teitan High just a few days ago."

Makoto nodded.

"Height? Weight? Age?"

"Where do you live? Your parents? Any siblings?"

Kogoro launched into a rapid-fire string of questions, just like running a police interrogation.

"180 cm, 70 kg, eighteen years old."

"My hometown is Tianhai, China—both my parents are in Tianhai, and I'm an only child."

"I'm staying at the Ritz-Carlton in Roppongi for now, but I've been apartment hunting these past few days—I'll be moving to Beika soon."

"If you know of any listings, Uncle, feel free to pass them along—price is no concern."

Makoto answered each question in turn, calm and methodical.

"The Ritz-Carlton in Roppongi?"

"H-how much is that a night?"

"Tap, tap, tap…"

Kogoro grabbed his phone and pulled up the hotel's room rates.

"F-f-fifty thousand yen?"

"Per night?"

"And that's the cheapest room?"

His face went blank within seconds, the number coming out in a stammer.

"By the way, Uncle—this is a small gift for our first meeting."

"Please do accept it."

Makoto produced a green paper gift bag.

"What's this?"

Kogoro flipped it open—inside was a box with a green shell.

He opened that one too, and inside was…

A watch.

A watch!

"A Rolex Daytona—and in 18K rose gold, no less?"

The words were out of Conan's mouth before he could stop them.

Well, growing up with a famous actress for a mother had made him very familiar with luxury goods from a young age.

A coveted piece like the Rolex Daytona, he could spot at a glance.

"Is it expensive?"

Professor Agasa asked quietly.

"At least 5,000,000 yen."

"And you'd still struggle to find one."

Conan said it with a frown.

This guy.

What a filthy move—trying to buy the old man off with money.

'But no amount of money can buy a detective!'

"Snap!"

Kogoro shut the watch box and fixed Makoto with a grave stare.

'I knew you'd do it, Uncle!'

It was the first time Conan had ever thought Mouri Kogoro actually looked cool.

"You must marry Ran."

"I'm entrusting my daughter to you."

Kogoro seized Makoto's hand, moved to tears.
