Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The First Saint’s Law

The Academy did not forgive. It studied.

Three days after Saint Orin left the courtyard without a fight, the council changed tactics. If force made Kael stronger, they would use law.

*Elder Ren:* "We will not fight him. We will define him."

They issued the Edict of Measurement. Every student would be tested again. Publicly. No exceptions.

The point was clear: force Kael into a category, or prove he had none.

*The Second Test*

The Testing Hall filled again. Ten thousand seats. One crystal.

*Announcer:* "Kael Veyrin. F-Rank. Step forward."

He walked out. Same black eyes. Same quiet.

*Elder Mara:* "Place your hand."

Kael did.

The crystal flared. White light. Then red. Then nothing.

The hall went quiet.

*Elder Joren:* "No reading."

*Elder Mara:* "Impossible."

*Elder Ren:* _internal_ "Not impossible. Unwritten."

The crystal cracked.

*Kael:* "The tool is not built to measure me."

*Elder Mara:* "Heretic."

*Kael:* "Incorrect. I am the correction."

He turned and walked out. No one stopped him.

The Book opened as he left.

_Rule Twelve: When the system cannot read you, it will try to delete you._

*Lyra's Warning*

That night, Lyra found him in the library.

*Lyra:* "They're going to isolate you."

*Kael:* "Let them try."

*Lyra:* "Isolation is a Law. If they make it real, you cannot copy people. You cannot copy concepts from others."

*Kael:* "Then I copy the concept of isolation itself."

*Lyra:* "You can't. It's a meta-law."

*Kael:* "Meta-laws are just rules written by people who think they're final."

_Target: Concept, Isolation. Source: Edict of Measurement. Edit: Isolation Fails._

_Success._

For one second, the entire Academy felt less alone. Students breathed easier. Guards looked at each other instead of through each other.

Elder Mara felt it and slammed her hand on the table.

*Elder Mara:* "He's editing the air."

*The Saint's Return*

Saint Orin came back. Not to fight. To talk.

*Saint Orin:* "You are not evil."

*Kael:* "Correct."

*Saint Orin:* "You are not safe."

*Kael:* "Safety is a cage with soft walls."

*Saint Orin:* "What do you want?"

*Kael:* "To write rules where F-Rank does not mean death."

Orin was silent for a long time.

*Saint Orin:* "If you break the world, I will be the one who stops you."

*Kael:* "If you stop me, make sure you're better than me."

Orin left. But he did not file the report.

*The First Lawbreaker School*

Kael did not hide. He taught.

In the basement, he gathered five F-Ranks. Trash. Burp-copiers. Stone-color copiers.

*Kael:* "You are not useless. You are unmeasured."

He taught them the Right Way.

_Copy the mechanism. Not the result._

_Copy one trait. Not the bloodline._

_Copy one tenth of one percent better._

In one week, a girl who copied dust learned to copy air filtration. She could breathe in poison rooms. A boy who copied sound learned to copy vibration dampening. He could walk without noise.

They were not powerful. They were precise.

*Student:* "Why help us?"

*Kael:* "Because the world needs more than Saints. It needs engineers."

The Book wrote a new line.

_Rule Thirteen: Power that cannot be taught is tyranny. Power that can be taught is a system._

*The Academy Strikes Back*

Elder Mara sent Inquisitors. Not one. Ten.

They surrounded the basement.

*Inquisitor Lead:* "Surrender the heretic."

*Kael:* "No."

_Target: Concept, Surround. Source: Ten Inquisitors. Edit: Surround Fails._

The circle broke. One Inquisitor stepped left when he meant to step right. Another blinked and lost sight for a second.

Kael did not fight. He edited the outcome.

*Kael:* "Leave. Or I will copy your fear until you do."

They left.

*The Cost*

That night, Kael bled from his nose. Editing ten minds at once had a price.

*Lyra:* "You're pushing too hard."

*Kael:* "If I stop, they win."

*Lyra:* "If you die, we lose."

_Target: Trait, Mental Endurance. Source: Doctor Manhattan Concept. Edit: Human-Compatible._

_Success._

The bleeding stopped. His head cleared.

*Kael:* "Thank you."

*Lyra:* "Don't thank me. Keep living."

The Book added a line.

_Rule Fourteen: To carry more laws, you must first carry more self._

*The End of Chapter 4*

The Academy posted new guards at every gate. New wards on every wall. New laws in every hall.

Kael walked through them all.

Because laws only work if you believe in them. And he believed in better ones.

_Rule Fifteen: The Right Way of Using Copy is to make room for others to exist._
