Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Academy’s Gate

A gate is not stone. A gate is a decision.

Starfall Academy's front gate was iron, thirty feet tall, with runes that judged bloodlines. If you were C-Rank or higher, it opened. If you were F-Rank, it burned your hand.

Kael walked to it with forty students behind him. No weapons. No bloodline crests. Just people.

*Lyra:* "They'll close it."

*Kael:* "Then we'll open it."

*Nina:* "What if it burns us?"

*Kael:* "Then we'll copy the burn and make it light."

The Book opened.

_Rule Thirty: A gate that keeps people out is a lie written in metal._

*The Guard Captain*

*Captain Vess:* "Stop. Academy grounds. No entry without rank."

*Kael:* "We have rank. It's called Human."

*Captain Vess:* "That's not a rank."

*Kael:* "Then change the definition."

_Target: Concept, Rank. Source: Academy Law. Edit: Rank Equals Human._

_Success._

The runes flickered.

*Captain Vess:* "What did you do?"

*Kael:* "I gave the gate a better rule."

The gate did not open. But it did not burn.

*Captain Vess:* "I can't let you in."

*Kael:* "You can't stop us either."

He placed his palm on the iron.

_Target: Concept, Gate. Source: Iron Gate. Edit: Gate Opens to All._

_Success._

The iron groaned. The runes rewrote themselves. The gate opened.

Not wide. Just enough.

*The Students Walk In*

Forty F-Ranks stepped onto Academy marble for the first time.

*Boy:* "It's cold."

*Girl:* "It's ours."

*Old Man:* "It's just stone."

*Kael:* "It's stone we're allowed to touch."

The courtyard emptied. Students watched from windows. Elders watched from balconies.

*Elder Mara:* "Arrest them."

*Elder Ren:* "Wait."

*The Trial in the Courtyard*

*Elder Mara:* "Kael Veyrin. You broke the gate."

*Kael:* "I fixed it."

*Elder Mara:* "You brought F-Ranks into a C-Rank space."

*Kael:* "I brought people into a people space."

*Elder Mara:* "You have no bloodline."

*Kael:* "I have forty."

He turned.

*Kael:* "Stand up."

Forty students stood. They did not glow. They did not roar. They just stood.

*Kael:* "Air filtration."

They breathed. Clean.

*Kael:* "Night vision."

Their eyes adjusted.

*Kael:* "Balance."

They did not sway.

*Kael:* "Hearing."

They heard the Academy breathing.

*Elder Joren:* "These are traits. Not bloodlines."

*Kael:* "Correct. Bloodlines are myths. Traits are tools."

*The First Lesson in Public*

*Kael:* "Elder Mara, give me your worst law."

*Elder Mara:* "Law: F-Ranks Kneel."

The air pressed down. Forty students bent.

*Kael:* _internal_ "Copy the law. Edit it."

_Target: Concept, Law. Source: F-Ranks Kneel. Edit: Law Fails._

_Success._

They stood.

*Kael:* "Law: Everyone Stands."

_Success._

The courtyard straightened.

*Elder Mara:* "You cannot write laws."

*Kael:* "I can. And mine has more people in it."

*Lyra Speaks*

*Lyra:* "I am Seal Saint Bloodline. Academy pride. And I was property."

Silence.

*Lyra:* "He fixed me. Not with blood. With understanding. If that is heresy, then I am heretic too."

She stepped beside Kael.

*Elder Ren:* _internal_ "The Saint stands with the Heretic."

*The Saint Vale Test*

Saint Vale returned. Not to fight. To test.

*Saint Vale:* "Law: No Entry."

The ground under Kael's feet turned to air.

*Kael:* _internal_ "Copy the concept of ground."

_Target: Concept, Ground. Source: Imagination. Edit: Ground Exists._

_Success._

Stone formed under his feet.

*Kael:* "Law: Everyone Belongs."

_Success._

Saint Vale's law shattered.

*Saint Vale:* "You are not F-Rank."

*Kael:* "Correct. I am Unwritten."

She looked at the forty students. Then at the gate. Then at Elder Mara.

*Saint Vale:* "I will not stop them."

She walked away.

*The Gate Stays Open*

*Elder Mara:* "If they stay, the Academy falls."

*Elder Ren:* "If they leave, the Academy dies."

*Elder Mara:* "Choose."

*Elder Ren:* "I choose life."

He walked down the steps.

*Elder Ren:* "Kael Veyrin. The Academy recognizes The First School."

The courtyard gasped.

*Elder Mara:* "You're mad."

*Elder Ren:* "I'm awake."

*The First School Moves In*

They were given the west wing. Empty. Cold. Forgotten.

*Kael:* "This is ours now."

*Students:* "Yes."

They cleaned it. They painted it. They brought desks from the market.

*Merchant King:* "I'm donating. Don't ask why."

*Kael:* "I won't."

*The Book's New Rule*

That night, forty students slept in the west wing.

The Book opened.

_Rule Thirty-One: The Right Way of Using Copy is to open gates until no one is locked out._

*Lyra:* "We're inside."

*Kael:* "Now we change it."

*Nina:* "What if they change us back?"

*Kael:* "Then we copy better."
