As in this economy, it was basically pocket change. But then again— all I had to do was to destroy the society as a whole before reuniting it through pain and struggle.
Trauma bonding seemed to always bring people closer together the most effectively.
Look at my wife for example.
Well, it's not exactly an accurate representation of trauma bonding since he is traumatised and I did the traumatising. But we still shared the trauma in a way and it helped us bond.
So— it works.
In a way.
We arrived just before noon.
The sun was still high, sharp against the pavement, making everything look bleached and brittle. The town was small—maybe four blocks wide, five long. Just enough to play pretend. Just enough to trick my puppy into thinking the world still held shape.
I parked the car and shut off the engine. The silence was instant. Luther sat still beside me, gaze forward, jaw set. Waiting.
