Chapter 1 - Void City

It was just a normal morning in Void City, the bustling streets filled with civilians going about their daily business, salesmen calling out and advertising their goods.

Holographic screens displayed adverts across skyscrapers and other buildings.

And, of course, it was never complete without the usual villain attack and hero rescue.

Today was a hostage situation: the supervillain Warp held an entire three-story complex filled with people hostage…

"Come on, Warp, come out. Let's have a peaceful conversation. We can negotiate what you want," a figure shouted from outside the building.

"Like hell I will. You're just going to rip me apart in the bloodiest way possible," a coarse voice replied from within.

"What? Me? Never. I'm a good guy; we can just talk it out—no violence involved," the figure tried again, forcing an amicable tone.

"Fuck you, Spark! Tell that to my partner!" the voice barked.

In the corner, inches away, lay a bloody pile of meat and bones.

That was Split, Warp's accomplice. He'd stepped out "to have a friendly conversation" with Spark—and this was the result.

Looking at the mess, Spark quickly hid his bloodied fists behind him, in a vain attempt to conceal evidence as he offered an awkward smile. "Come on, man. I told you it was an accident—my fist slipped."

"Fuck you, Spark!"

"Hahhh." Spark sighed, helpless.

You might be wondering who this individual was…

As you've probably guessed, his hero name was Spark.

Spark was almost one of the greatest superheroes in Void City…

I repeat, almost!

Unlike other heroes, Spark had quite the background…

His mother was Lilac, No. 3 on the supervillain list. His brother, Void, was No. 4. And his father, Gravon, was No. 0 on the same list.

Yes, No. 0—that was how vile the man was. He ranked above No. 1 and was known as the Walking Calamity. When he struck, it took the entire Aegis Nine—the top nine heroes—to stop him.

So, as you can see, Spark's upbringing wasn't exactly stellar.

If not for some serious intervention, he might have joined the family business himself!

There he stood in dismay, clad in a pure-white suit with his signature S on the belt buckle, white cape flapping behind him, short white hair, and sapphire-blue eyes.

He looked so handsome and delicate that no one would ever believe he could hurt a fly.

Scratching his head, he let out a disappointed sigh. "Okay, buddy, just state your demands from within. There—happy?"

A brief silence followed before the voice replied, "I want to speak with the Aegis Nine, and I want to announce that Code X is about to be leaked by me."

"And any villain who comes here must not be stopped or killed, Spark. I'm serious—if you do anything to scare them off, I'll make sure no one here walks out alive."

Warp made sure to clarify. After all, Spark was notorious in the villain community—a ruthless hero who didn't believe in tempering justice with mercy.

No, in fact, he was well known for tempering justice with blood!

Frowning at the odd request, Spark had no choice but to reply, "Okay, I promise…so, like, I can't touch even one—"

The voice cut him off mid-sentence, sounding aggrieved. "I swear to God, Spark, if you touch anyone and scare the rest off, trust me, I'll level this entire building."

"Okay! Okay! Yeesh, it was just a joke." Spark turned to the government agents around him. "You heard the man—what are you waiting for?"

The agents, shivering under his gaze, went to work; if not for the fact they knew Spark never killed the innocent, they wouldn't have shown up at all.

After all, they stood before the legendary Hero of Depraved Justice…

A man secretly loathed by the government. Seriously what wasn't there to hate?

Unlike other heroes, whenever Spark took down a villain, they always had to send a clean-up squad. Instead of making arrests, they buried corpses.

Quickly, the call was made.

An agent approached Spark and informed him, "Sir, the request has been delivered to headquarters. The Aegis Nine should arrive any moment…but as for the villains, I'm not so sure they'll show up."

Spark nodded in understanding. After all, which villain in their right mind would willingly appear where both he and the Aegis Nine were waiting?

Very soon, he got his answer…

With a scowl, he gazed at the ten looming figures over the horizon and muttered beneath his breath, "Brother…"
