Chapter 2 - THE JOY OF EXPECTATION

The warm glow of the setting sun cast a serene ambiance over the Thompson's cozy suburban home. Sarah, eight months pregnant, sat comfortably on the porch, her swollen belly a testament to the new life growing within her. Her husband, John, joined her, and they sat together in comfortable silence, enjoying the peaceful evening.

Sarah's mind wandered to the upcoming arrival of their baby, and she felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. She had always dreamed of being a mother, and now that dream was almost a reality. John, sensing her thoughts, placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"Hey, you're going to be an amazing mom," he said, his voice filled with confidence.

Sarah smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude toward her husband. She was lucky to have him by her side throughout this journey.

As they sat there, Sarah's phone buzzed, breaking the silence. It was her best friend, Rachel, calling to discuss plans for a baby shower. Sarah's face lit up with a smile as she answered the call.

The conversation with Rachel was lively and engaging, with discussions about themes, decorations, and guest lists. Sarah felt grateful for her friend's enthusiasm and support. As they talked, she couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation building up inside her.

However, as the conversation drew to a close, Sarah felt a sudden, inexplicable shiver run down her spine. It was as if a cold breeze had swept past her, despite the warm evening air. She brushed it off as mere nerves, attributing it to the anxiety that sometimes came with expecting a first child.

As she hung up the phone, John noticed the faint furrow between her brows. "Everything okay?" he asked, his voice filled with concern.

Sarah nodded, forcing a smile. "Yeah, everything's fine. Rachel wants to throw me a baby shower."

John's face lit up with a smile. "That sounds like fun. We'll have to make sure to return the favor soon."

The rest of the evening passed without incident, but the feeling of unease lingered, hidden beneath the surface of Sarah's consciousness. As she drifted off to sleep that night, she couldn't help but wonder if this sense of foreboding was just her imagination running wild or something more.

The darkness closed in around her, and Sarah felt a sense of uncertainty creeping in. She placed a protective hand over her belly, whispering softly, "It's okay, little one. Mommy's here."

In that moment, Sarah felt a deep connection to her unborn child, a sense of love and responsibility that she had never experienced before. But as she spoke those reassuring words, a small, nagging voice in the back of her mind whispered, "But what if something's wrong?"
