Arthas's intuition told him something wasn't right; the two girls were definitely hiding something from him.
And indeed, they were.
His question left them both speechless, stammering for a long moment without a word.
"Um… um…"
"Let me explain."
Souna pushed up her glasses, stepping in front of Rias.
"First, we apologize for performing the reincarnation ritual without your consent.
However, we hope you understand our intentions.
Our actions were meant to protect your safety."
Souna explained, and Arthas nodded slightly. He'd just heard from Souna about the fallen angels hunting down those who possessed divine artifacts.
The reason the fallen angels hunted artifact possessors was because they feared these individuals might make pacts with devils, becoming reincarnated devils and powerful enemies.
It was a tangled web of cause and effect, ultimately stemming from the war between angels, devils, and fallen angels, dragging innocent humans into the conflict.
While Arthas wasn't particularly impressed by Souna's "I was saving you" act, he gave her the courtesy of her sincere apology, remaining silent.
Souna's attitude was arrogant, but perhaps that was simply her devilish nature.
He sensed that both girls weren't ordinary devils; they likely possessed noble bloodlines.
Even if they weren't of noble blood, a devil's arrogance towards a human was understandable.
Wait… he was now a devil himself, a familiar to both of them.
Familiar—a polite term for a servant with little to no rights.
Thinking this, Arthas touched his nose. He clearly didn't intend to be controlled, but since he aimed to conquer the world, starting with a connection to one of the three most powerful factions in the world would be convenient.
He would slowly grow stronger within the devil clan, then lead the devils to eliminate the other two factions, thus unifying the world.
Rias and Souna were unaware that Arthas was already plotting his rise to power.
Thinking he was listening attentively, Souna continued.
"When we found you, you were completely covered in frost.
We initially suspected a divine artifact had gone berserk. That situation was extremely dangerous; you could have destroyed yourself or everything around you at any moment. If that power attracted the fallen angels, you would have been doomed."
"So, I immediately brought you to my home and began the devil reincarnation ritual. As a devil, you would be far stronger than you were as a human, and controlling the berserk divine artifact would become possible."
Arthas nodded slightly.
Up until now, Rias hadn't seemed to have any involvement. Logically, he should have become Souna's familiar.
But what had happened to involve Rias, making her, along with Souna, his master?
"The devil reincarnation ritual is simple, but the success rate depends on the potential of the person being reincarnated. The higher the potential, the greater the cost, and that cost is devil pieces."
Souna sighed wearily.
"I underestimated you. I thought three pawn pieces would be enough, but…"
"But it failed?"
Arthas asked, and Souna shook her head.
"I don't know what happened.
Normally, if the reincarnation fails, the pieces return. But when I inserted the three devil pieces into your body, the reincarnation simply stalled. It neither failed nor succeeded; it just got stuck."
Souna looked troubled.
"I had no idea what was going on.
And since your power was becoming increasingly unstable and berserk, I had to seek help."
"Let me explain what happened next."
Rias cheerfully approached Arthas, her long red hair cascading down, its faint fragrance brushing against his cheek.
"Souna had no choice but to come to me. After seeing your condition, I immediately threw in all eight of my pawn pieces, and the reincarnation was completed."
Rias's explanation was so concise that Arthas took a moment to process it.
"So… I became a devil using eleven pawn pieces?"
"That's right! A devil reincarnated with eleven devil pieces—a first and likely a last! Even Beelzebub, the creator of the devil pieces, probably never imagined such a bizarre event!"
Rias said proudly.
It was indeed her bold attempt that had brought Arthas, this devil reincarnated with eleven pieces, into existence.
"Sounds impressive."
Arthas could only touch his head and offer a wry smile.
According to Souna's earlier explanation, there were only eight pawn pieces in a set, making his eleven-piece reincarnation unprecedented.
"So, I'm your master, and Souna is your master too. Of course, since I contributed eight out of eleven pieces, you'll mostly follow my orders, my dear familiar."
Rias said this, and Souna immediately protested, pushing up her glasses.
"Who was talking about sharing fairly just now? You get Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and I get Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and we share Sundays. Why has it suddenly become 'follow my orders'?"
"How could I know it would actually succeed? I was just saying it casually. Now that it's successful, and it's all my doing, I naturally get the bigger share!"
"That's unfair! In my opinion, every devil piece is crucial. Even if you provided eight, my three were indispensable. Therefore, our rights as masters should be equal!"
