"So how did you escape? You said there were guards everywhere," Caroline asked, fixated on the scarf around my neck.
"I…"
Wait, they don't need to know about my strange powers. Even if they would accept me, it could also jeopardize them if the secret is exposed.
"You know me… I escaped through the window when they were not watching," my voice trembled.
'Okay, that was not a good way to tell a lie. At least make it believable.'
Lydia and Caroline stared at me with their brows furrowed, but they did not probe any further.
"And what's with that scarf? You don't wear scarves." Caroline reached for it, but I quickly stepped back.
"I think it looks good on me," I said with a sheepish smile.
Lydia nodded her head. "It sure looks good on you." She dipped her hand into her pocket, bringing out some sweets. "Here, have some sweets. You look tense."
I stared at the colorful sweets in her hand. The emotions I was trying to suppress all this while came crashing inside me.
