Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Remember

===July 6 1992===

Lucius Malfoy leaves The Leaky Cauldron and apparates near his manor. He walks trying to clear his mind. "A muggleborn heir." He muses.

"I wonder how HE would feel about that." Lucius ponders to himself as he rubs the spot on his arm where the dark mark resides. Having been the dark lord's right hand he was one of the few that knew his secret, that he was a half-blood.

The fact the mark was there tells him that the dark lord still lives, in spite of Potter defeating him again. Lucius had arranged for Quirrel to bond with the dark lord, and convinced Dumbledore to hire Quirrel. It seems like that was all for naught. Now what remains of the dark lord has vanished again.

He ponders his next move as he arrives at his manor and walks to the library. In his distraction he doesn't notice that a rat is following him. A rat that is really a wizard, named Peter.

Peter has spent the last nearly 11 years in this form. He found himself lucky to get picked up by Percy Weasley. The Weasleys always made sure that he was fed, and even better he got to spy on one of the most prominent families on the light side of the previous war.

Add to that the youngest Weasley, Ginerva, had taken to taking baths with him the last couple years. Unfortunately for Peter, her brother, Ron, claimed him as his pet and took him to Hogwarts with him. So he no longer had that privilege during the school year. Though Ron never put him in a cage so it was easy to sneak over and watch the girls shower.

Peter had been trying to figure out how to become Ginerva's pet when Harry and Hermione told Ron and Neville they were magical heirs. Now Peter knew that this meant they would soon be dealing with Lucius Malfoy. Lucius, he knew, had a tendency to change what he did with how the balance of power changed.

Peter also knew Lucius had something powerful of the dark lord's. So when the school year was over and the Weasley's were getting ready to for relatives to come visit Peter snuck out and made his way to Malfoy Manor. Now he follows Lucius into the Malfoy Library. Immediately he feels the presence of their lord's power in the library.

Peter watches as Lucius selects a couple books and takes them out. Only after he leaves does he finally release his rat form and become human once again. He allows his dark mark to guide him around the library until he finds it. A small black diary, he picks it up and shoves it inside his robes before turning back into a rat and scampering off.

===July 7 1992===

Early in the morning a package appears on the Grangers' porch. At the same moment an owl flies into the open window. The owl lands in the kitchen where Harry is teaching Hermione to cook. Hermione is a mess as she has managed to get pancake batter on her clothes and in her hair, but that doesn't seem to bother her as she concentrates on the pan on the burner. She carefully lifts the pan by its handle and slides the finished pancake on a plate.

"I did it!" Hermione exclaims.

Harry smiles. "Congratulations!" He turns Hermione around and kisses her lightly. Right as the owl screeched.

The two magicals look over and see a letter in its claws. "Looks like we have mail." Hermione says.

"You check it." Harry says as he carefully pulls the spatula out of her hand. "I'll finish cooking."

Hermione nods as she grabs an owl treat and gives it to the owl before taking the letter.

Dear Miss Granger and Mister Potter,

On your porch you should discover the tomes you requested. If you have any specific questions feel free to write to me or ask Draco.

Sincerely,

Lucius Malfoy

Hermione felt overjoyed at the thought of new books. She quickly goes to the front door where sure enough a stack of books, tied together with string, sits waiting. She grabs the stack and brings it inside, closing the door as she does.

She places the books on the kitchen table. "Look, Lucius came through." She says.

Harry turns and sees the stack. "Good to see. Now why are they on the kitchen table?"

Hermione chuckles remembering her father's rule of no books at the table. "I wanted you to see them, then I was going to look at them real quick. I promise I'll have them off the table before you're done cooking."

Harry shakes his head knowing full well it was a bad idea to get between her and a new book. Hermione unties the string and starts looking through the books, all of them are large and leather bound. As she picks up one a small green book falls off of it, having had been stuck on the book in her hands.

Hermione carefully picks up the small book, the outer binding feels like it's made out a large leaf. She carefully opens it, and watches as writing appears.

If you are reading this you are a young heir. My name is Hestia Hufflepuff. When I started this I was a second year student in Hogwarts, my father had just passed forcing me to claim heir status. Inside you will find a chronicle of the changes magic pushed on me, I hope my story helps you.

Hermione reads Hestia's story right up until Harry taps her to get her attention. "Breakfast."

Hermione blushes as she puts the book down. "Sorry, I started reading."

"Don't ever apologize for being you." Harry says as he puts a plate of food in front and another plate across the table then sits down. "So, what's the book about?"

"It's more of a diary." Hermione answers. "Hestia Hufflepuff wrote what she did every day then analyzed how magic was changing her. The little bit I've read I think we're both being affected more than we think."

"We should do the same thing." Harry says. "Otherwise we might not realize it ourselves."

Hermione nods. "I think I have some notebooks, we should try and go back as far as we can."

The rest of the day seemed to zoom passed as they as they recalled what they tried to recall everything. Once done they exchanged books, figuring that maybe the other would see things they missed.

"I can see magic has been changing us." Hermione says. "You've picked up reading, even without my promoting."

"You're right," Harry says. "It's not like I particularly disliked reading before, but now I find myself picking up a book if I have free time."

Hermione nods. "Exactly."

"You've become more bold, like slipping into my room the other morning." Harry says.

"And making sure I could feel your arousal wasn't bold?" Hermione asks.

Harry blushes. "I still can't believe I did that."

"It's magic trying to push us forward." Hermione says.

"We'll have to be more careful in the future." Harry says.

"Hopefully Hestia will have tips." Hermione says, holding the book up.

"Let me know, something just doesn't feel right about me reading a girl's diary." Harry says.

"Isn't that what you're doing now?" Hermione asks.

"That's different, you asked me to." Harry replies.

Hermione laughs. "I see your point. I'll let you know."
