Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Games People Play

===November 1 1992===

The whispers in the common room were all about the Chamber of Secrets and whether or not it had anything to do with the sudden appearance of the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw heirs. Harry and Hermione take up their couch with Hermione laying against Harry as they have become accustomed to.

"I thought we were the only ones to see the message last night." Hermione whispers holding her book up so the others don't realize she's talking.

"I know." Harry says doing the same thing. "That means at least one person saw it and walked away before we got there."

"Or whoever wrote the message is acting like they saw it." Hermione says.

Harry nods as he turns the page of his book. "I hadn't thought of that."

"I skimmed through "Hogwarts: A History"real quick last night. I didn't see anything."

"You skimmed through it?"

"I've read it a half dozen times." Hermione says. "So I'm able to skim and remember what it says fairly well."

"Impressive memory." Harry says. Hermione nods as she blushes slightly. Then Harry continues speaking. "I wish we had more information."

"I'll see if I can get Professor Binns to tell us anything on Wednesday."

===November 4 1992===

Harry and Hermione sit on their usual couch after classes. "Slytherin's heir." Harry says. "It's got to be Malfoy."

"Only if it's through his mom's side." Hermione says. "I don't see Lucius not claiming it."

"Good point, and if it was Draco he'd probably be bragging about it." Harry says.

"We should write to Lucius and see if he knows anything, since he's the governor in Slytherin's place." Hermione says.

"Good idea."

===November 7 1992===

They had written Lucius that very night. Lucius wrote back telling them that the Dark Lord had been the heir to Slytherin, and had appointed him as governor. As far as he was aware he didn't have any children, but it wasn't impossible.

Lucius also told them that at one time he had a diary that had belonged to the Dark Lord, but has not seen it since the end of the war. Having not read it, he had no idea if it contained the kind of information that was necessary to open the chamber.

Harry has other things to worry about today. It's the first Quidditch game of the year and it's against Slytherin. At the end of their last practice they handed him a new jersey for the year. He has it, and his old one in his hands. The rest of his gear is stored in a locker.

He comes downstairs with both jerseys and finds Hermione waiting for him. He goes over to her. "Hey, are you coming to the game?"

Hermione nods. "Of course, I have to cheer for my boyfriend."

"I was wondering if you might want to wear my jersey from last year." Harry suggests as he holds out the jersey. "I cleaned it and such."

Hermione takes the jersey and looks it over. She holds it so his name and number are facing him. "Are you laying claim to me?"

"That's not what I meant." Harry says. "You don't have to wear it if you don't want to. I just thought it would be easier for me to pick you out of the crowd."

Hermione nods. "I'll think about it." She gets up and kisses him briefly. "Good luck today."

Harry comes out as they introduce the team. He looks at the gathered crowd and tries to find Hermione. Not able to see her from the ground he waits until he's allowed up in the air. He smiles when he spots her wearing his old jersey and cheering for him.

The game proceeds fairly normally until Harry spots the snitch and goes after it. The second he does Draco sees the snitch and follows. Soon the two of them are neck to neck racing as fast as they can.

Harry presses the last bit of speed from his broom, surprising Malfoy. Harry reaches out as a bludger hits his arm. Harry screams as he swerves away from Draco, reaching out for the snitch with his left hand and grabbing it right before he loses control and falls. Draco swoops down and catches Harry, right as the whistle is blown, calling the game.

The crowd has gone silent. "Nice catch," Harry says as the adrenaline starts to wear off and he's feeling the pain.

"You too," Draco says as he carefully lands them on the ground.

They get off the ground. Harry holding his right arm against him.

Hermione, having pushed through the crowd, runs to Harry's side. "Harry, are you alright?"

Harry grunts, face distorted in pain. "I think his arm is broken." Draco says.

Hermione pulls out her wand and mumbles a spell as she touches her wand to Harry's shoulder. "Pain blocking spell, Madam Pomphrey taught me."

"Thanks." Harry says, his mind clearer.

"It's only temporary, we need to get you to the infirmary."

Harry looks around, it's obvious everyone is waiting for them. "I have an idea."

"What's that?"

"I have the snitch in my left hand." Harry says. "But you caught me."

"What would you suggest?" Draco asks.

Harry looks to the scoreboard and sees they are tied. "Put your right hand on my left and we raise them together showing the snitch, game ends in a tie."

"Sounds good to me." Draco says, knowing Harry could easily just take the win. So they do as Harry suggested.

Snape and McGonagall come onto the field. "What is the meaning of this?" Snape asks.

"I may have caught the snitch, but Draco caught me before the whistle." Harry says. "I think it's only fair we both get credit for it. 75 points for each team."

"That leaves the game in a tie." McGonagall says.

"So it does." Harry says. "Now if you excuse me, I'd really like to see about getting my arm fixed."

McGonagall and Snape both look at his obviously broken arm. "Yes. We need to get fixed up immediately."

"I'll get him to Madam Pomfrey." Hermione says. "You two work out the match details."

They head off to the hospital wing. "I see you decided to wear my jersey."

"I figured why not." Hermione says. "Everyone knows we're dating anyway."

They arrive in the infirmary and Madam Pomphrey comes to them. "Miss Granger, Mister Potter, what brings you here?" She asks.

"My arm got hit by a bludger during the game, I think it's broken." Harry says.

"You seem to be doing fine for someone with a broken arm." Pomphrey says.

"He was in a great deal of pain before I used the pain blocking spell you taught me." Hermione says.

Pomphrey pulls out her wand and casts the diagnostic spell. "Yes, you're correct, your arm is broken." She flicks her wand. "Fixed."

Harry moves his arm. "Much better, thank you."

Pomphrey nods. "While you're here, should I check on your other problem?"

"Please do." Harry replies.

"Other problem?" Hermione asks as Pomphrey casts a different diagnostic spell.

"When Pomphrey examined all of us after the troll she discovered my extreme malnutrition." Harry says. "She gave me a potion to help with that. I didn't mention it cause I assumed that was the end of it."

"That potion lasted for months." Pomphrey says. "I gave you another while you were unconscious last year. Between that and regular meals you are doing much better."

"So, I don't need any more potions?' Harry asks.

"I would like to give you one more, and then test you before the end of the year." Pomphrey says.

"You know best." Harry says as Pomphrey gets the potion and hands it to him. He drinks it down. "Best tasting potion yet."

Hermione chuckles. "You would know."
