Chapter 6 - 11-12

"I can't just sit around and wait. I need to go practice my ability more," Paige stood up and said.

"Wait a second, how are you going to practice your ability? There are lots of people on the mountain right now. You could run into someone at any moment. If you're exposed, it would be bad," Winn said. He didn't know that Paige's ability was mental-based.

He thought her ability was space-related, which meant just putting things in and taking things out.

Even though he didn't see much to practice with that kind of power, these couple of days weren't the right time anyway.

"Can't you practice inside the cave? If it's possible to make do for now, you can go outside in a few days," Winn asked.

"No, the cave is too small, and there's nothing to aim at," Paige shook her head.

She wanted to go out and find some prey to try her ability on.

The prey on the mountain = mutant beasts.

There were no zombies or mutant beasts yet, so she could only try her skills on regular prey for now.

Speaking of zombies, Paige thought that once she tested her skills on wild animals, she could go find those enemy soldiers to practice.

She'd heard they had stolen a lot of food and supplies from people. If she could take it back, maybe she wouldn't have to worry about food and drink in the future.

Thinking about the meat she used to eat, it tasted way better than mutant beast meat.

"Then wait a bit. You're not familiar with the mountain. When Uziel gets back, let him take you to a quieter area to practice," Winn said.

He and his brother often went into the mountains. If Uziel took Paige deeper in, there shouldn't be many people around.

"Alright!" Paige agreed, thinking it made sense. Uziel would be back soon anyway, and waiting a bit more didn't matter.

When Uziel came back, Paige immediately stood up and said, "Let's go."

Uziel looked confused. "Go where?"

"Take Paige to a place away from people so she can practice her ability. I'll watch things here," Winn said.

"When the water starts boiling, open three packs and put them in. Then just keep stirring."

Then he woke Ely up to eat something. He was probably just scared, and would be fine after resting for a couple of days.

"He hasn't eaten anything all day. If he doesn't wake up to eat soon, he'll starve to death," Paige was worried Winn wouldn't know how to cook, so before leaving, she reminded him.

Winn nodded. He really didn't know how to prepare the compressed biscuits.

They looked small, but since they didn't have much food, they should definitely eat sparingly.

Uziel took Paige deeper into the forest. At first, they occasionally saw some villagers, but as they went further, fewer and fewer people appeared.

"This should be far enough. If we go any deeper, we might run into something big. We didn't bring tools today, so we'd be at a disadvantage," Uziel explained, stopping Paige.

Paige nodded. She didn't fully understand the combat power of the prey here and didn't insist.

From the original memories, wild boars were huge and terrifying.

Uziel and Paige searched around, when suddenly, a rabbit jumped out of the bushes.

Before Uziel could react, the rabbit's head exploded.

Exploded.

Uziel looked at Paige in disbelief.

Paige also looked shocked.

Uziel realized it wasn't Paige who did it, which gave him a scare.

Wait, why did the rabbit's head suddenly explode?

"Did someone put a bomb on the rabbit's head? Otherwise, why would it just blow up like that?" Uziel curiously poked the rabbit with a stick, trying to see if it was some kind of trick.

"I don't know either. I didn't even use much strength. How did it just explode?" Paige said innocently.

"Did you really do it? How did you do that?" Uziel asked curiously as he looked at Paige.

Paige said, "It was my ability. It suddenly appeared, and I just threw out an ability without thinking. Who knew it would explode like that?"

That was really weak. In the apocalypse, such a low-level attack would only tickle a mutant beast.

"I didn't see you throw anything!" Uziel asked curiously.

"My ability is mental. You can't see it with your eyes," Paige explained.

Uziel nodded. "Sounds pretty amazing."

He looked excitedly at Paige. "Can it be shared with others?"

If he had that kind of ability, he wouldn't have to worry about anything when going out.

Paige shook her head. "Abilities are something you're born with. You can't learn them later."

Otherwise, the government wouldn't need to train people from embryos.

Uziel looked a little disappointed. He couldn't learn it? That was a pity.

"But I do know some combat moves. I can teach you guys later. If you learn them well, even most ability users won't be able to beat you," Paige said to Uziel.

To fight zombies, you not only need a strong ability but also a strong body. Otherwise, you'd just be someone whose brain works faster than their body.

What's the use of just having a good brain if your body can't keep up? When zombies come, you'll just end up as easy prey.

As the strongest in the base, all kinds of combat skills came naturally to her.

Uziel's eyes lit up. Ability users couldn't even beat him? There weren't any ability users here anyway, so wouldn't that mean he could do whatever he wanted?

But Uziel didn't know that not all ability users were as strong as Paige. Still, once he learned, it would be normal for ten ordinary people to not even get close to him.

For the whole morning, Uziel followed behind Paige picking up prey.

They were all wild chickens and rabbits. Paige pointed and Uziel picked. In no time, the whole basket was full.

"We should probably head back now," Uziel said as he looked at the sky. The sun was already high.

Paige touched her stomach. She hadn't felt it before, but now that it was mentioned, she did feel a bit hungry.

"Then let's go back first. Tonight, we'll go a bit deeper," Paige said as she started walking back.

From these small animals, Paige couldn't tell much because they were too easy to catch. Anyone could do it.

"Okay," Uziel said excitedly. Who wouldn't want to be a big hero? Now that he knew he had the chance, of course he would agree.

When they returned to the cave, Ely was already awake. He just sat silently by the fire, not saying a single word.

Uziel brought him back, then grabbed two wild chickens and left the cave.

He cleaned the two wild chickens first because Paige said she wanted to eat meat.

There were about ten or so wild chickens and rabbits in the basket. After they were full, they could take time to clean the rest. It was cold now, so they wouldn't spoil quickly.

Paige sat beside Ely. Ely looked at his sister, and then tears began to fall from his eyes.

Paige patted his small shoulder and comforted him. "Don't be sad. In the future, your sister will take you to get revenge. We'll kill all the devils and avenge Mom and Dad."

Paige really cared about her only younger brother.

Their parents were always busy working, so Paige had raised Ely by herself. That's why Ely was very close to his sister.

Hearing her comforting words, he cried even louder.

He knew their home was gone. With just him and his sister, surviving in the future would be hard. What she said was just to make him feel better.
