She hesitated for a moment and said, "Actually, I'm pretty happy working at the little restaurant right now, and..." She paused, her expression serious. "Jeffrey, I want to try relying on myself a bit. If I join your company and everyone finds out I'm your girlfriend, I might not even have to do anything. I could just sit there and collect a paycheck every month."
"Isn't that a good thing?" he countered.
"At least I want to see what I can achieve on my own," Rachel replied. "I don't plan to deliver takeout forever. On the side, I've been studying some certification materials that I hope will help my future career." She had already started to make her own plans for her life.
Hearing this, Jeffrey frowned slightly.
He reached out and brushed his fingers lightly against her swollen cheek. She winced in pain and gasped.
