Chapter 39 - Fruits of hardships!

'What?! Only 12? From 248 Soul remnants to only 12 fragments!?'

Dein once again felt like he had been cheated. Really, really cheated! Because how could his hard earned 248 Soul Remnants only amount to 12 Soul fragments!

If he used math, it means that he would need twenty Soul Remnants to create a single Soul Fragment. Which is really, really unfair because of how many he needs. But if he thinks about it, it wasn't so bad as well.

He could get Soul Remnants from defeating an enemy. He doesn't know how his aspect defines "defeating an enemy" is yet, but if it turns out that he doesn't need to kill them to count as him defeating them then he could defeat a single enemy over and over again. Though that'll be tiring.

But if that's the case then top that with the soul shards he would get everytime he kills a nightmare creature then the amount of Soul Fragments he could get each enemy could double. Albeit slowly.

The amount of Soul Remnants he would get could also have a connection to the rank of the enemy he defeated so there's that as well.

After all, the spell always believes in fairness. Even though Dein haven't been experiencing much of that as of late.

Thinking about it like that, Dein gave a sigh. Somewhat satisfied because it means he could get Soul Fragments slightly faster than others. Even the trio in his mind tend to agree.

"Yes, we agree. Now what are you gonna do with the fragments?"

The little girl spoke in seriousness beside Dein. Pulling him from his thoughts. Dein meanwhile, looked at the Runes again.

But wherever he looked, he couldn't find where the fragments are. It wasn't even in his Soul Storage. But luckily, just as he's about to turn into an angry nightmare creature because he thought he'd been cheated again by the Spell. Scaredy spoke in his mind.

[Y-you might wanna take a look at here guys…]

When Dein heard that, he immediately dove inside his Soul Sea. Serious did the same, causing the manifestation of the little girl to dissapear.

Inside the Soul Sea, Dein's eyes widened when he saw 12 floating, glass like fragments. It's glowing bright as if to have a life of its own.

Dein gulped and so did the three. Then the little girl suggested.

"Should we touch it, mister?"

Dein nodded at her and then to the other two waiting patiently. Slowly, he reached for one of the fragments and when he did, it immediately dissapeared and a voice spoke in his mind.

[Your Soul grows stronger]

He summoned the Runes and saw.

Soul Fragments: [1/250] [0/250] [0/250/ [0/250]

Dein finally smiled. It was successful! He finally managed to take his first step into saturating their core. At first he thought he would've to kill one thousand awakened beast to be able to saturate his core but because of this. He could now increase his strength without having to ingage in bloody battle.

At least for now. Since he still needed to defeat nightmare creatures in the future to get this boon again. Which he hope won't turn bloody.

In the end, Dein absorbed all 12 fragments instantly. When he focused on his body again. He now felt much stronger, faster, more healthy and brimming with vitality.

Of course that's just a small step, he's still just slightly stronger and durable than a mundane. But even then, Dein's mood gradually became much better and all the anger he felt from Caster and the other Legacies dissapeared.

He can't wait to look at his other rewards!

With that thought, Dein summoned the first memory he'd been so afraid to touch albeit his curiousity. A silk of sparks weaved itself to fit his body. Turning into clothes.

Then, the runes stretch themselves before his eyes.

Memory: [A Sister's Embrace]

Memory Rank: Awakened

Memory Tier: I

Memory Type: Armor

Memory Description: [In the depths of the moonless night. A grieving woman fought a gremlin with all her might. She was not the fastest, the strongest, nor was she the smartest. But she was kind. Kind enough to wish death upon her undying foe, and kind enough to abandon it all when the echo of her dead brother rose from beyond, only to be pierce by the Gremlin's wrath. Shaken, the sister ran to protect her brother until the Gremlin's wrath reached her heart as well. In the end, she failed to bring death upon her undying foe and failed to embrace her brother with protection. Leaving this regret behind.]

Dein pressed his lips together as he read that. This was the reason why he'd been so reluctant to summon this memory, all his two memory in fact. It's because Dein is just afraid to face his guilt.

But being afraid to face his guilt forever would not do anything good for him so Dein peeled his eyes off from the runes and shifted to watch himself in the mirror.

There he saw a young man with dark hair that's cut cleanly. He wore a simple white tunic and a comfortable oversized pants that ends with a simple looking leather shoe that rose up to his shin.

Much more, all of it were covered by a long, dark grey cloak that hide Dein's whole upper body all the way to his knee. There was even a hood with soft white fur on the insides.

And all of it was… extremely comfortable to wear. It was labeled an 'armor' and yet it looks more like a piece of clothing travelers used when going on a long journey. And it becomes just a home clothing if you take off the cloak. It wasn't for fighting at all.

Even more bizarre, the moment the 'armor' fully covered Dein's body. The temperature in the room suddenly changed. It's as if the temperature lowered to just the right amount to make Dein comfortable.

And when Dein tried to move around using it. Performing a few punches into the air, his sweats that was just about to form would dissapear. It seems [A Sister's Embrace] really does do its best to make its wearer comfortable no matter what.

He glanced at the runes again to confirm and sure enough he saw:

Memory Enchantments: [A Sister's Comfort]

Enchantment: [A Sister's Comfort]

Enchantment Description: [Provides the wearer with strong soothing comfort for their body and mind]

He grimaced at the name but focused on the description.

'So it affects not just the body…'

The enchantment… makes a lot of sense, but it made Dein feel even more guilty wearing it. Because comforting Clay, physically and mentally is probably what Clara wanted to do when she saw her brother, the echo at least, get stabbed in the back.

She must've wanted to comfort him from the pain and clear his afraid mind. But alas, none of that happened and Dein is now taking advantage of those emotions Clara felt at the time.

'That said, I'm still gonna make use of this memory.'

It's much harder for him to get memories after all. And at the same time, he'd already accepted the fact that he had murdered them all. Dein can't get stuck feeling guilty forever for doing something he had no choice but to do.

It'll just be a waste of his time.

That said, he's going to look back from time to time to remember the people he killed. That way, he won't turn into a killing monster someday and would still kept his honor as a Legacy.

And also, not gonna lie… 'It looks good on me doesn't it?'

The little girl chuckled in Dein's mind as he summoned another memory.
