"What—?" Aiden tried to speak, confused by Alex's words, but Alex cut him off.
"Disappointing." Alex shook his head. "You don't realise what your father has done for you, and more importantly, why he did it.
"You think your father had you learn the ways of the Empire's nobility because he believes they are superior to our ways? You're wrong. Your father understood that our ways alone are not enough. In some respects, we need to adopt certain standards of the nobility to integrate into the wider aristocracy. But that doesn't mean he wanted you to abandon our ways, much less look down on them," Alex explained.
'How did he...?'
Aiden's eyes widened. Alex's words closely resembled what his father had admitted to him just a few days earlier.
"Don't speak as though you understand my father!" Aiden retorted angrily.
In truth, however, it was less anger than denial.
