Chapter 7 - Chapter 7:The Charity Ball

The grand ballroom shimmered like a dream—crystal chandeliers hanging from enchanted ceilings, fountains of stardust magic glimmering at every corner, and music spun by ethereal instruments playing on their own. Nobles, guild heads, and magical elites floated through the space in a blur of silk, enchantments, and veiled ambition.

Evelyn arrived quietly.

Not in a gilded carriage nor trailed by attendants. But the moment she stepped through the arched doors, conversation halted for a breath. Midnight-blue silk rippled around her, the spellwork on her gown catching the light like stars woven into fabric. Her hair was gathered in an elegant twist, and soft runes pulsed gently along her collarbone—subtle protection, hidden strength.

She didn't know who had sent the dress.

She didn't need to ask.

From the far side of the ballroom, Alexander Valerius spotted her. Surrounded by his usual orbit of aristocrats, he excused himself without hesitation. His stride was sure, and his expression unreadable. Whispers followed him, just as they followed her.

"You made it," he said when he reached her.

"I didn't think I had a choice," she replied, a hint of dry amusement on her lips.

He offered his arm. "Then let's not waste the night."

They danced.

Not just once. Again and again, as though the rest of the ballroom melted away. Nobles watched in stiff silence, some jealous, others calculating. Evelyn's family did not speak a word. Isabella's glare could have split stone.

Later in the evening, Celeste approached. She curtsied elegantly and smiled. "It's lovely to finally meet you, Evelyn."

Evelyn, slightly flustered, returned the gesture. "The pleasure is mine."

Celeste looped her arm through Evelyn's and led her toward the balcony. "My brother is many things," she said softly, "but subtle is not one of them."

Evelyn glanced at Alexander through the glass. He stood speaking to the guildmaster, but his eyes tracked them the entire way.

"I'm not sure what he sees in me," Evelyn said.

"I am," Celeste replied. "It's the same thing he's always needed—someone who isn't afraid of him."

They spoke for a while longer. The stars above shimmered, and for once, Evelyn felt like she was a part of this world—if only for a fleeting night.
