Chapter 459 - Arsenal vs Chelsea 3

Conte's temper had never been a secret.

At halftime, the Chelsea dressing room echoed with his furious voice.

He went from one player to the next, unleashing a relentless barrage of criticism.

No one dared look him in the eye. Every Chelsea player kept his head down.

After all, they knew just how poor they had been during the first half. If Arsenal had been even slightly sharper, Chelsea could easily have gone into the break trailing.

Conte wasn't simply venting.

He had a purpose.

He wanted to provoke his players.

If he couldn't wake them up through reason, then he would ignite their pride. When he was a player, plenty of managers had used the same approach on him. It might have been old-fashioned, but he knew from experience that it worked.

Sure enough, when Chelsea emerged from the dressing room, every player wore the same grim expression.

Their eyes burned with determination.

They looked ready for a fight.

Conte watched them walk onto the pitch and gave a slight nod.

Exactly what he wanted.

. .

"The first half can only be described as disappointing," Martin Tyler said on Sky Sports.

"The match has unfolded in a way that's both expected and surprising."

Gary Neville agreed.

"These are two top-caliber teams, yet at times they've looked like teams struggling in the lower divisions."

"I'm not trying to be overly critical," he continued, "but both managers have plenty to think about because there are obvious problems on both sides."

For Arsenal, the explanation was understandable. Arsène Wenger's sudden illness had disrupted everything. Combined with the departure of several key players during the summer, inconsistency was almost inevitable.

Chelsea, however, was harder to explain. José Mourinho's departure had been settled well before the season. Conte had plenty of time to prepare. Most of Chelsea's core players were still at the club.

So why were they struggling this badly?

Some analysts had already questioned Chelsea's aging squad and unbalanced age profile.

Judging by recent performances, perhaps those concerns carried more weight than people first believed.

. .

The teams returned to the pitch and switched ends for the second half.

Kai immediately noticed something different.

Every Chelsea player looked deadly serious.

There was a fire in their eyes.

He had no idea what Conte had said inside the dressing room.

Whatever it was...

It had worked.

The referee blew the whistle.

Chelsea attacked immediately.

The move caught Arsenal completely by surprise. This time, the danger didn't come through Hazard, but it came from Pedro.

Oscar spotted the run instantly and fired a perfectly weighted pass into space. Pedro accelerated onto it, exploding down the right flank. The attack developed so quickly that even Kai reacted a split second late.

He immediately sprinted back.

"Stop him!"

Gibbs rushed across to confront Pedro.

Pedro never slowed down.

Instead, he drove diagonally toward the penalty area, relying entirely on his pace.

"Stay with him!"

Kai continued retreating while shouting instructions.

Gibbs turned to recover.

But Pedro cleverly stepped across his path, disrupting his stride.

That tiny movement was enough.

Gibbs lost half a step.

Pedro burst clear.

Suddenly...

He was through on goal.

Gibbs' mind went blank.

At that exact moment, another figure flew into the frame.

Kai.

He launched himself across the turf.

It wasn't really a tackle.

It was a desperate block.

Pedro struck the ball.

Thud.

The shot clipped the tip of Kai's outstretched boot.

The slight deflection changed its course just enough.

The ball smashed against the outside of the left post and bounced back into play.

Kai let out a deep breath.

For a moment, he thought Arsenal had escaped.

"Kai gets the slightest touch!" Martin Tyler shouted.

"The ball comes back off the post... Hazard!"

Hazard controlled it beautifully with his chest near the edge of the area.

One touch.

Another touch to set himself.

Then...

Bang.

The shot flashed low toward the far corner.

Čech stretched desperately.

He never got close.

The ball nestled inside the right post.

Goal.

Chelsea.

Only three minutes into the second half.

Arsenal 0.

Chelsea 1.

The Emirates Stadium fell silent.

Chelsea's players sprinted toward Hazard in celebration.

Conte punched the air repeatedly on the touchline.

His halftime gamble had paid off.

Across the pitch, Arsenal's players stood motionless.

Hands on hips.

Faces filled with frustration.

Koscielny clenched his fists.

He wanted to say something.

But Gibbs had been his defensive partner for years.

Instead of blaming him, Koscielny simply stamped the turf in frustration.

Kai reacted first.

He clapped loudly.

"Come on!"

"We're getting this back!"

Most of his teammates remained silent.

Kai refused to stop.

"We've been here before!"

He pointed around the pitch.

"Think about those matches everyone said we couldn't win."

"Think about the teams we beat."

"Think about everything we've already overcome."

"Remember what that felt like!"

The rest of Arsenal stood quietly, weighed down by disappointment.

In the stands, the supporters grew restless.

Conceding was one thing.

Watching the team lose belief was something else entirely.

The atmosphere surrounding Arsenal felt alarmingly different.

Last season, they still had Cazorla and Di María.

Those two could unlock almost any defense while maximizing Suárez's finishing ability.

Now...

Alexis Sánchez was beginning to lose influence.

Wilshere's performances fluctuated wildly.

The fifty-million-pound signing, Aubameyang, had yet to justify his price tag.

Worst of all...

Kai, a player whose greatest strength had always been controlling matches from midfield, was now expected to carry almost every attacking responsibility himself and sprint back like a madman to put in a desperate tackle.

Was this really the same Arsenal that had conquered Europe only months earlier?

Gary Neville voiced what many viewers were already thinking.

"Arsenal have too many issues at the moment."

"They're struggling to create chances."

"They're making mistakes defensively."

"And apart from Kai..."

He paused.

"It feels like he's the only one driving this team forward."

No one could question Kai's performance.

Chelsea had devoted multiple players to stopping him.

He adapted.

He broke the press.

He organized attacks.

He tracked back to rescue the defense repeatedly.

Without him, Arsenal might already have been out of the match. Watching the game unfold, it almost felt as though one man was desperately trying to keep a sinking ship afloat.

Kai continued running.

One end of the pitch.

Then the other.

Trying to plug every leak.

Trying to repair every mistake.

But even the man fans dubbed as The Great Wall could not hold back the sea forever.

His breathing became heavier.

Sweat rolled down his face and dripped onto his wrist.

His throat felt dry.

Every breath burned.

Still...

His legs kept moving.

He could run.

He could fight.

But he couldn't win this match alone.

Kai lifted his head.

Aubameyang stared blankly into the distance.

Suárez stood with his head lowered.

Then...

Kai looked at Wilshere.

Wilshere was already looking back.

Their eyes met.

Wilshere thumped his fist against the left side of his chest.

Then pointed firmly at the ground beneath his feet.

Kai smiled.

At least one of them still believed.

His temper was awful.

His mouth rarely stopped.

His flaws were impossible to ignore.

Yet when everything was on the line...

He never stopped fighting.

The match wasn't over.

Neither was Arsenal.

Kai was the captain.

His responsibility wasn't simply to play well.

It was to make everyone else believe.

One goal.

They only needed one goal.

The Arsenal that conquered Europe had survived situations far worse than this.

Giving in once only made it easier to give in again.

Every setback deserved resistance.

Every defeat demanded a response.

Failure?

To hell with that.

Kai thought.

. .

Conte stood on the touchline, his eyes fixed on the pitch.

Chelsea were leading.

Yet he couldn't relax for even a second.

Arsenal's resilience made him deeply uneasy.

Compared to last season, this Arsenal side had clearly regressed.

Even so, they remained more than capable of punishing any lapse in concentration.

Especially against a Chelsea team still searching for consistency.

"Stay compact!"

Conte bellowed from the technical area.

"Don't give them anything!"

Chelsea's players immediately increased their intensity.

For them, this match meant more than three points.

Many people had dismissed Chelsea's Premier League title from the previous season, claiming Arsenal had sacrificed the league to focus on winning the Champions League.

According to that narrative, Chelsea had only benefited from Arsenal's priorities.

After Chelsea's disappointing start to the new season, those opinions had only grown louder.

The players wanted to silence them.

They wanted to beat Arsenal and remind everyone who the Premier League champions were.

.

.

Bang.

Kai absorbed a heavy shoulder charge.

His body lurched sideways.

For a split second, it looked as though he would fall, but years of balance training and extraordinary core strength took over. He twisted his hips, planted his foot, and somehow recovered his balance.

Oscar, who had made the challenge, stared in disbelief.

Kai's knees had buckled.

His upper body had tilted almost forty-five degrees.

Yet somehow...

He stayed upright.

"Get him!"

Hazard shouted.

Oscar immediately chased after him.

Fabregas stepped up to close the space.

Kai watched Fabregas poke a foot toward the ball before retreating into position.

Fabregas wasn't fooled.

He held his ground.

Kai's expression remained calm.

His left foot swept over the ball.

His body leaned forward.

Through my legs?

Fabregas thought.

Not this time.

He instinctively closed the gap between his legs.

At that exact moment...

Kai's left foot landed beside the ball instead.

His heel rolled the ball sharply across his body.

The ball rebounded perfectly toward his right foot.

Kai changed direction instantly, leaving Fabregas planted where he stood.

"What a piece of skill from Kai!"

Martin Tyler exclaimed.

"Absolutely brilliant!"

Gary Neville laughed.

"That's classic La Croqueta. Fabregas read one move, and Kai gave him something completely different."

Fabregas slowly turned around.

His expression was frozen in disbelief.

Kai was already charging toward Chelsea's penalty area.

He looked up.

Suárez was surrounded.

Wilshere and Aubameyang were still arriving from the wings.

Too slow.

Kai made his decision.

He nudged the ball across his body.

His stride lengthened.

His right leg swung through with tremendous force.

Boom.

The ball screamed toward the goal.

A low drive.

Fast.

Skidding toward the bottom right corner.

"Kai... shoots!"

Martin Tyler's voice rose with the shot.

Every Arsenal supporter inside the Emirates held their breath.

Kai watched the ball the entire way.

It looked destined for the corner.

Then...

A pair of giant hands appeared.

Begović stretched to his absolute limit.

His fingertips made the faintest contact.

The ball changed direction just enough to curl around the outside of the post.

Kai clicked his tongue.

"So close..."

Around the stadium, Arsenal supporters grabbed their heads in disbelief.

How had that stayed out?

It had everything.

Power.

Placement.

Perfect timing.

Yet Begović had somehow produced the save.

Gary Neville shook his head.

"You have to give Begović enormous credit."

"That save keeps Chelsea in front."

Martin Tyler added,

"But look at Kai's contribution."

"He wins the ball in midfield, launches the counterattack himself, beats Fabregas with outstanding skill, and when nobody gets into position quickly enough, he backs himself from distance."

"That tells you everything about the confidence he's playing with."

Many critics had claimed Arsenal's Champions League triumph had drained the squad.

That they had nothing left.

Kai was proving otherwise.

Even with limited support around him...

He remained capable of changing a match.

Throughout the afternoon, he had defended.

Organized.

Driven the attack.

Beaten defenders.

Created chances.

Taken responsibility for himself.

It was becoming increasingly obvious.

He was evolving into the complete centerpiece of Arsenal's football. Last season's Kai would never have attempted this many direct runs or individual attacks.

. .

Conte finally exhaled after seeing Begović push the ball away.

Even so, his eyes never left Kai.

Players like him were every manager's dream.

Elite defensively.

Excellent in possession.

Outstanding at controlling tempo.

Now...

He was adding dribbling and ball carrying to his game as well.

That was especially valuable in the Premier League.

This wasn't a league where midfielders were allowed endless touches.

Opponents closed you down instantly.

Yet Kai was still finding ways to break through.

Conte glanced at the stadium clock.

Sixty-eight minutes.

Twenty-two remained.

He made his decision immediately.

"Substitution."

Chelsea made two changes.

Fabregas came off.

John Obi Mikel came on.

Zouma also left the pitch.

John Terry replaced him.

The message couldn't have been clearer.

Protect the lead.

Adding Terry, Chelsea's captain and defensive leader, was particularly worrying for Arsenal.

. .

Pat Rice frowned as the fourth official raised the board.

"That's not good..."

He hadn't expected Conte to make the first move.

Normally, the team chasing the game made substitutions first.

The side protecting the lead usually waited.

Conte had completely ignored convention.

By acting first, he forced Arsenal to react.

Pat turned toward his bench.

Every substitute immediately looked back hopefully.

His eyes moved slowly across the players.

Left.

Right.

Then back again.

His expression gradually darkened.

Without saying a word, he turned back toward the pitch.

The substitutes exchanged confused glances.

What happened?

Pat had reached an uncomfortable conclusion. There was simply very little quality left on Arsenal's bench. Last season, he could have called upon players like Walcott, Rosický, Ramsey, and several others.

Now...

Most of them were gone.

There were very few genuine game changers available.

Several minutes later, with the clock ticking into the seventy-fourth minute, Pat knew he had no choice.

He looked toward the bench again.

"Campbell!"

"Start warming up!"

Campbell almost jumped to his feet.

Finally.

Since joining Arsenal, opportunities had been almost nonexistent. Had another chance failed to arrive, he had already begun considering leaving the club.

At least following Kai's advice and continuing to work hard had finally paid off.

Three minutes later, Arsenal made their change.

Kanté departed.

Campbell entered the match.

It wasn't a straight swap.

Campbell moved onto the left wing.

Wilshere dropped deeper into midfield.

The shape resembled Arsenal's system from the 2013-14 season.

The Emirates crowd, however, felt little excitement. Supporters remembered exactly why Wenger had once used that formation. It had been part of a rebuilding process and a temporary solution while the squad evolved.

Now...

Pat Rice was using it for a very different reason.

Not as a step toward something better.

But because, at this moment, he simply had no better option.
