Chapter 458 - Arsenal vs Chelsea 2

Kai kept moving, but every touch of the ball felt suffocating.

Chelsea's plan was working.

The moment he received possession, blue shirts swarmed around him from every direction, cutting off every passing lane before he could even lift his head.

Whether Conte was an elite tactician or not was open for debate.

What no one questioned was his discipline and his stubbornness.

Once he identified an opponent's greatest threat, he committed fully to stopping it.

Today, that threat was Kai.

Every time Kai got on the ball, Oscar was the first to close him down. Instead of charging directly, he curved his run, cleverly blocking the most dangerous passing angles while buying time for Hazard and Costa to collapse around him.

The trap closed almost instantly.

Once again, Kai was boxed in by three Chelsea players.

Under that kind of pressure, even a midfielder like Cazorla would have struggled to escape.

Hazard eventually poked the ball away, and as Chelsea broke forward, Oscar gave Kai one extra shove in the back.

It was unnecessary and clearly personal. Before Kai could react, Oscar had already sprinted away. Kai stared after him, his jaw tightening.

The failed passes were beginning to pile up. He could feel his patience slipping, so he closed his eyes for a brief moment.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Inhale.

Exhale.

After several deep breaths, his expression gradually settled.

Giving up had never been part of who he was.

When problems appeared, he tried with all his might to solve them.

Chelsea's defensive trap wasn't impossible to break. He simply hadn't found the answer yet. Kai replayed the previous few minutes in his mind as he moved.

Then his eyes lit up.

The problem wasn't the pressure.

It was the time.

Chelsea's pressing net needed a moment to close.

If he released the ball before it fully formed...

One touch.

The answer was one-touch passing.

It demanded instant decision-making.

Fortunately, reading the game had always been his greatest strength.

.

.

The midfield battle intensified.

The moment possession entered the center circle, players from both sides immediately converged. Neither Arsenal nor Chelsea was willing to concede an inch.

"Here!"

Oscar raised an arm.

The pass arrived at his feet.

Almost immediately, Kanté charged toward him.

Oscar instinctively shifted his body to shield the ball. He could already feel the French midfielder breathing down his neck. Since Arsenal's Champions League triumph, Kanté's reputation had skyrocketed.

His market value had exploded.

So had his reputation.

Many pundits joked that Arsenal had built two gates in midfield. Only after getting past Kanté and Kai could anyone even think about reaching Petr Čech's goal.

That alone spoke volumes about their defensive partnership.

Oscar feinted to the left.

Kanté mirrored him instantly.

Oscar clicked his tongue.

Just as he prepared to drive forward, someone shouted.

"Move it! You're in trouble!"

Oscar reacted on instinct and released the pass immediately. The ball had barely left his foot when a powerful leg appeared in front of him.

Strong.

Explosive.

Kai stretched out his foot, cushioned the ball effortlessly, and burst past Oscar like a gust of wind.

Oscar froze for a split second.

Then he spun around, but before he could even accelerate, Kai had already completed another first time pass.

Oscar could only stop in frustration.

Moments later, the ball found Kai again.

Oscar rushed over.

One touch.

Gone again.

Oscar stopped for the second time.

This time, instead of chasing recklessly, he stayed beside Kai.

Kai drifted around the center circle, noticing Oscar tracking him from only a few steps away.

He let out a quiet scoff.

.

.

Arsenal recycled possession after Aubameyang's latest attack stalled.

The return pass rolled toward Kai.

Seeing it, Oscar exploded into a sprint.

"I've got him!"

He shouted to his teammates as he charged.

Hazard said immediately.

"Slow down! We can't get there that quickly!"

Oscar ignored him completely.

If he hesitated for even a second, Kai would release the ball.

Kai watched Oscar charging toward him.

Just before receiving the pass, he took one step to his left.

Then...

Bang!

His shoulder drove straight into Oscar's chest.

The collision was perfectly legal. Oscar let out a muffled groan. The impact knocked the air from his lungs.

By the time he recovered...

Kai was already gone.

Oscar's failure to hold him meant Chelsea's pressing trap never fully formed. Kai carried the ball into Chelsea's half for the first time all afternoon. At that moment, he finally understood how to dismantle Conte's system.

"Oscar committed too early," Gary Neville observed on Sky Sports.

"Hazard and Costa couldn't close the space in time, and Chelsea's pressing structure completely fell apart."

Martin Tyler nodded.

"Kai may have lost a shoulder-to-shoulderfew pounds compared to last season, but physically, he's still one of the strongest midfielders in the Premier League. Oscar simply isn't winning that shoulder to shoulder battle."

On the pitch, Chelsea immediately retreated into a compact defensive shape.

Kai chose not to force the attack.

Instead, he slipped a pass into Wilshere's path.

Then he shouted,

"Jack! Make something happen!"

Wilshere looked over, almost offended.

Then he shouted back even louder.

"Leave it to me!"

His performances since the start of the season had been inconsistent. At one point, Pat Rice had even considered dropping him back to the bench. Only Wilshere's enormous talent had kept him in the starting lineup.

This match was effectively his final opportunity to prove he deserved it.

If he failed again, Mathieu Flamini was ready to take his place.

Wilshere understood that better than anyone.

He never spoke about the pressure.

He carried it himself.

That was why Kai's words mattered.

And in a fast-moving match, trust often meant teammates looked for you more often. Wilshere scanned the pitch repeatedly.

His head moved constantly.

Left.

Right.

Center.

Unlike Kai, who often anticipated the game before turning his head, Wilshere relied entirely on observation.

Aubameyang's run.

Suárez drifting between the center-backs.

Kai charging forward.

Decision made.

He threaded a magnificent through ball.

The timing was perfect.

Just as Cahill stepped sideways, the pass slipped cleanly between his legs and raced toward the left side of Chelsea's penalty area.

Gary Neville jumped from his seat.

"What a pass from Wilshere!"

Chelsea's entire defensive line had shifted toward the middle.

Begović had done the same.

The left side of the box was completely open.

But nobody was there.

Suárez occupied the center.

Kai was still arriving.

Aubameyang...

Instead of attacking the space, he had drifted inside.

Kai immediately sprinted forward, hoping to rescue the move.

Too late.

Azpilicueta reached the ball first and hammered it clear.

Kai pulled up, stopping his run.

Then he spun toward his teammates.

"Who's covering the left?"

His voice echoed around the pitch.

"Where's the width?"

Across from him, Azpilicueta was saying almost the same thing to Chelsea's defenders. The two captains briefly locked eyes. Neither needed another explanation.

Chelsea had nearly paid for leaving the left flank completely exposed. Arsenal had wasted the opportunity because no one attacked it.

Both teams had made mistakes.

Neither captain continued shouting.

One reminder was enough.

Aubameyang lowered his head awkwardly.

Ivanović wore much the same expression.

They knew exactly where they had gone wrong.

The game resumed.

Around the Emirates, however, Arsenal supporters groaned in frustration.

It had been their clearest chance of the match.

No one doubted Aubameyang's talent, but moments like this reinforced the same feeling many supporters had begun to share.

He was an outstanding player.

Yet he still seemed slightly disconnected from Arsenal's collective rhythm, almost as if he and the team's attacking patterns were never completely in sync.

"It's a shame that chance didn't end in a goal," Martin Tyler said on Sky Sports, "but Arsenal's attacking rhythm has changed noticeably. They've moved away from intricate build-up play and are now advancing with quick combinations and one-touch passing."

Gary Neville nodded in agreement.

"The biggest difference is Kai. He seems to have figured out how to deal with Chelsea's man-marking. He's to resort to one-touch passing, and once he starts doing that, Arsenal becomes a completely different team."

On Arsenal's touchline, Pat Rice was anything but calm.

He stormed toward the technical area, shouting almost exclusively at Aubameyang.

"Stay wide!"

"Why did you drift inside?"

"If you hold your position, that's a goal!"

After venting his frustration, Pat bent over with his hands on his knees, clutching his chest as he struggled to catch his breath. He was so furious it felt as though he might give himself a heart attack.

Still, the chance was gone.

There was no point in dwelling on it.

The encouraging sign was Kai's adjustment.

Pat had always admired one quality above all else.

Kai never accepted failure. Whenever he ran into a problem, he confronted it head-on instead of avoiding it. That mentality was on display again today.

Through constant thinking and experimentation, Kai had finally found a way to loosen Chelsea's grip on him.

The pressure was still there.

Chelsea were still committing multiple players whenever he received possession, but now he would release the ball before the trap closed.

That alone was enough to bring Arsenal's attack back to life.

. .

Conte stood on the opposite touchline, absentmindedly biting a fingernail.

Kai's in-game adaptation had caught him completely off guard. The football world had only recently started identifying effective ways to neutralize Arsenal's captain.

If they counted only the matches where Kai had been specifically targeted, there had been just four.

Four matches.

Yet within that short span, Kai had already found a solution.

Players like that were every manager's nightmare.

Unfortunately, Conte had no choice.

He could only stick with the original plan and hope Chelsea executed it better.

. .

Although Arsenal had failed to convert their opportunity, the move itself was significant. It proved their attack was functioning again. Now they simply needed patience.

Little by little, they had to seize control of possession and dictate the rhythm.

Chelsea restarted play.

Begović immediately launched a long ball toward the attacking third.

Kai had already anticipated it.

Dropping into a deeper position, he became Arsenal's midfield shield.

Rather than attacking the ball immediately, he first moved into Costa's path, preventing the striker from bringing the ball down cleanly against Arsenal's center backs.

Costa leaned into him.

Kai leaned back.

The two powerful players battled shoulder to shoulder.

Even so, Kai noticed something. After trimming down over the summer, holding his ground against players like Costa required noticeably more effort. Instead of wrestling longer than necessary, Kai changed his approach.

He jumped early.

His confidence came from his exceptional leap.

Very few players in the Premier League could match his vertical reach.

As he rose, Kai spread his arms naturally, denying Costa the space to jump comfortably. His body stretched fully in the air, allowing him to hang just a fraction longer.

Thump.

The ball struck his forehead.

Rather than heading it forward, Kai leaned backward and directed it behind him.

Koscielny immediately read the intention.

Instead of controlling it with his feet, he cushioned the header with his chest before nodding it safely toward Petr Čech.

Čech calmly gathered the ball.

Only then did Hazard arrive.

"Damn it!"

Hazard kicked the turf in frustration. Arsenal's defending was becoming increasingly uncomfortable to play against.

It wasn't about one defender shutting him down. Every time he received possession, another Arsenal player arrived to help, closing the angles until he found himself trapped inside a shrinking circle.

Hazard had developed into Chelsea's most influential player over the previous season. As his performances improved, Conte naturally built more of the attack around him.

But that also created a weakness.

If Hazard was contained...

Chelsea's attack slowed dramatically.

It resembled Kai's importance to Arsenal.

The difference was that Kai controlled matches through passing.

Hazard controlled them through dribbling.

And consistently stopping an elite dribbler was arguably an even more difficult task.

.

.

As the match wore on, however, both teams began making surprisingly basic mistakes.

First, Kanté misplaced a back pass.

Hazard intercepted it and nearly punished Arsenal immediately.

A few minutes later, Matic's heavy first touch gifted possession to Suárez.

Forced into a desperate recovery challenge, Cahill brought the striker down and received a yellow card.

The errors continued.

In the thirty-fourth minute, Koscielny completely misjudged the flight of a high ball. Fortunately, Čech raced off his line and headed it clear before Chelsea could capitalize.

Within fifteen minutes, both teams had committed three glaring mistakes.

The television cameras cut to both benches.

Conte's face looked thunderous.

Pat Rice appeared no better.

Even Kai stood there shaking his head in disbelief.

They're rushing everything.

Why is everyone in such a hurry?

He finally could not contain himself.

"Enough!"

His voice echoed across the pitch.

"Stop forcing it!"

"Keep the ball! Keep the ball!"

The shouting was aimed at Arsenal.

Even so, several Chelsea players lowered their heads awkwardly.

They knew they had been just as poor.

Gary Neville laughed in disbelief.

"If you covered up the shirts, you'd think this was a League One match."

Martin Tyler sighed.

"The quality has dropped dramatically. One team is the reigning Premier League champions. The other are the current Champions League holders. Yet neither side can seem to complete the basics."

The Emirates crowd grew increasingly restless.

The loudest frustration was directed toward Arsenal's back line.

It looked shaky.

Disorganized.

Nothing like the unit supporters had watched the previous season. Last year, defensive chemistry and collective discipline had masked many individual shortcomings. This season, with Kai taking on greater attacking responsibility, those weaknesses were becoming impossible to hide.

"What are they doing?"

"Just clear the ball!"

"Who told you to dribble under pressure?! You fucking twat! You are a defender!"

"Move it to the right player!"

"This is awful!"

Arsenal supporters had always demanded high standards. They took pride in their club's attractive football. For years, they had considered Arsenal artists with a football. They could tolerate a more pragmatic approach if it produced victories.

What they could not accept was poor football.

And today...

The football was poor.

Many supporters found themselves thinking about the man watching from a hospital bed.

Arsene Wenger...

Please come back.

The plea echoed silently through countless minds.

.

.

The chaotic rhythm continued until halftime.

Neither side managed to find the breakthrough. When the whistle sounded, players from both teams walked toward the tunnel with their heads lowered.

Supporters lining the tunnel expressed their disappointment from both sides.

Kai watched quietly before shaking his head.

Once every player had entered the dressing room, both managers hurried inside.

. .

Inside Arsenal's dressing room, Pat Rice exploded.

"What exactly are you doing out there?"

"Does anyone know?"

"We've worked on one touch football all week. Why does it disappear the moment the match starts?"

He turned sharply toward Kanté.

"N'Golo, why did you play that back pass?"

Kanté lowered his head, unable to answer.

Pat shifted his attention to Koscielny.

"And you!"

"Set yourself before you jump!"

"The striker had already gone around you, and you still attacked the ball."

He threw both hands into the air.

"What are you trying to prove? That you can outjump Michael Jordan?"

No one dared answer.

Pat took a deep breath before speaking again.

"Calm down."

His voice remained firm, but it carried more concern than anger.

"This match will be decided by who stays composed."

"Don't let the chaos drag you into making more mistakes."

He pointed toward the tactics board.

"Pass."

"Look."

"Receive."

"Look again."

"That's our rhythm."

"Not blind passes with your head down."

"Do you even know where some of those balls are going?"

"I certainly never coached you to play like this."

The dressing room fell silent.

Every Arsenal player stared at the floor.

Kai leaned against his locker, studying his teammates.

Their confidence had clearly taken a hit.

Pat happened to glance toward him.

Kai gave a slight shake of his head.

Pat understood immediately.

He stopped.

"That's enough," he said.

"Reset yourselves."

"The second half starts with a clean slate."

As Pat turned toward the tactics board, Kai stepped forward and clapped his hands loudly.

"Hey."

Everyone looked up.

"Lift your heads."

"We're still level."

"We haven't lost anything."

He looked around the room before continuing.

"We've got another forty five minutes."

"Settle down."

"Forwards, score goals."

"Midfielders, protect the ball and create."

"Defenders, defend."

"Do the basics first."

"Then play for each other."

Kai's eyes moved from one teammate to the next.

"I know every one of you can do better."

The atmosphere gradually improved.

Heads lifted.

The tension eased.

Confidence, however, could not be restored through words alone.

The second half would decide whether Arsenal truly recovered.
