Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: The City That Remembered Me

Elara's POV

"Finally."

The word followed me like an echo.

Thousands of voices had spoken it at the exact same time.

I stood frozen at the entrance of the City of Unwritten Stories, staring at the people filling the streets.

They were ordinary at first glance.

Merchants stood beside stalls.

Children ran between buildings.

Students carried books beneath their arms.

An old woman sat outside a tiny shop, arranging bottles filled with shimmering ink.

A man was arguing with another man over the price of a book.

Someone dropped a basket.

Someone laughed.

Someone shouted.

It looked like a normal city.

Except every building was made from books.

The roads were covered in lines of moving ink.

And every single person was staring at me.

"Okay," I whispered.

"This is officially the creepiest welcome party I've ever attended."

Lucien glanced at me.

"You're joking?"

"I'm trying not to panic."

"You're terrible at it."

"I know."

Caelum stepped closer.

"Don't look at them for too long."

"Why?"

"Because they remember you."

My smile disappeared.

"That's not exactly comforting."

"No."

Caelum's eyes moved across the crowd.

"It's not."

The giant clock above the city remained frozen at thirteen.

The final chime faded slowly.

Then something happened.

An old man stepped out from the crowd.

He wore a long gray coat covered in tiny silver letters.

His hair was completely white.

But his eyes—

His eyes were the same violet-black as the ink surrounding us.

He walked directly toward me.

Lucien immediately moved between us.

The old man stopped.

Then smiled.

"You still have protectors."

Lucien's hand moved toward his weapon.

"Who are you?"

The old man ignored him.

His gaze remained fixed on me.

"You don't remember me, do you?"

I swallowed.

"No."

He smiled sadly.

"You never do."

A strange chill traveled down my spine.

"How do you know me?"

"Everyone here knows you."

"That doesn't answer my question."

"It does."

The old man looked around.

"This city exists because of you."

My heart skipped.

"What?"

Caelum stepped forward.

"That's impossible."

The old man finally looked at him.

"Is it?"

Caelum's expression hardened.

"The City of Unwritten Stories was erased."

"Yes."

"Every record of it was destroyed."

"Yes."

"The Archive confirmed that."

The old man chuckled.

"The Archive has lied to you for centuries."

Lucien's eyes narrowed.

"Who are you?"

This time, the old man answered.

"My name is Orien."

He looked at me again.

"And I was here the first time you died."

Silence.

I stared at him.

"Excuse me?"

Lucien turned toward me.

Caelum's expression changed.

Orien simply smiled.

"You heard me."

My voice came out smaller.

"First time?"

"Yes."

"The first of... seven?"

"Yes."

I felt dizzy.

The city suddenly seemed too large.

Too loud.

Too real.

I pressed my fingers against my temple.

"I don't understand."

"You weren't supposed to."

"Who decided that?"

Orien's smile disappeared.

"The System."

That word changed the atmosphere immediately.

People around us lowered their heads.

Some stepped away.

Others began whispering.

"The System."

"She remembers."

"The Primary has returned."

"After all these years..."

"Seven lives."

"Seven failures."

My stomach tightened.

"Why are they afraid of me?"

Orien looked at the crowd.

"They aren't afraid of you."

He paused.

"They're afraid of what happens when you remember."

---

Lucien's POV

Something was wrong.

Not simply with the city.

With Elara.

She was standing beside me, listening to Orien, but something about her felt different.

Her eyes had changed.

Only slightly.

Almost impossible to notice.

But I noticed.

The silver flecks in her irises were moving.

Like ink spreading through water.

I had seen that once before.

In the Archive.

When the Mirror of Fractured Selves showed the other Elara.

I looked toward Caelum.

He had noticed too.

Our eyes met.

Neither of us spoke.

We didn't need to.

Something was waking up inside her.

Something old.

Something the System had tried to bury.

Orien raised his hand.

The city immediately became silent.

"Take her to the House of First Ink."

Caelum frowned.

"Why?"

"Because the city is beginning to remember."

"What happens if it remembers everything?"

Orien looked at him.

"Then the story ends."

I felt my grip tighten.

"Which story?"

Orien's gaze shifted to me.

"All of them."

---

Elara's POV

I followed Orien through the city.

Lucien walked on my left.

Caelum stayed on my right.

Neither trusted Orien.

Honestly?

Neither did I.

But there was something worse.

The city felt familiar.

Not in the way the Archive had.

This wasn't a vague feeling.

I knew these streets.

I knew the turns.

I knew where the little fountain was before we passed it.

I knew there would be a bookstore at the next corner.

And I knew—

"Stop."

Everyone stopped.

I stared at a narrow alley.

There was a tiny blue door at the end.

I knew that door.

My breathing became uneven.

"I've been here."

Orien nodded.

"Yes."

"When?"

"Seven times."

I stepped toward it.

Lucien caught my arm.

"Elara."

"I need to see."

He hesitated.

Then released me.

I walked through the alley.

The blue door was unlocked.

Inside was a tiny room.

There was a wooden table.

Two chairs.

A shelf full of books.

And a window overlooking the city.

On the table was a cup.

A child's cup.

Blue with a little painted star.

I stared at it.

Something moved inside my head.

A memory.

A little girl sitting at the table.

She was writing.

A boy sat opposite her.

He had dark hair.

I couldn't see his face.

"What are you writing?" he asked.

The girl giggled.

"A story."

"About me?"

"Maybe."

"Am I the hero?"

The girl shook her head.

"You're the person who finds the ending."

The memory shattered.

I gasped.

My knees almost gave way.

Lucien caught me.

"Elara!"

"I'm fine."

"You nearly fell."

"I'm fine."

Caelum entered the room.

His gaze landed on the cup.

He went completely still.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

"Caelum?"

He walked toward the table.

His fingers hovered over the cup.

Then he whispered:

"I know this place."

I stared at him.

"You do?"

He nodded slowly.

"I don't know how."

Orien stood in the doorway.

"You were here too."

Caelum turned sharply.

"When?"

Orien's expression was unreadable.

"Before you became Caelum."

The room went silent.

My heart began pounding.

"What does that mean?"

Orien looked at all three of us.

"That's the problem with rewritten stories."

He stepped inside.

"Names change."

His gaze landed on Lucien.

"Faces change."

Then on Caelum.

"Memories change."

Finally, he looked at me.

"But bonds..."

He smiled faintly.

"Bonds are difficult to erase."

Lucien's expression darkened.

"What bond?"

Orien didn't answer.

Instead, he pointed toward the shelf.

"Choose a book."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Because the book will choose you."

"That makes absolutely no sense."

"Welcome to my city."

I sighed.

"Of course."

I approached the shelf.

Hundreds of books filled it.

Some were enormous.

Some were tiny.

Some had chains around them.

Others seemed completely blank.

I reached for a black book.

Before my fingers touched it—

Another book fell.

It landed at my feet.

White cover.

No title.

I picked it up.

The moment I touched it, the room disappeared.

---

I was standing in a field.

The sky was red.

Books floated above me like birds.

Someone stood in front of me.

A girl.

She had my face.

But older.

Her clothes were torn.

Ink covered her hands.

She looked exhausted.

She looked at me and smiled.

"You're finally here."

I couldn't move.

"Who are you?"

The girl laughed softly.

"You really don't remember."

"Are you one of the six?"

Her smile vanished.

"No."

"Then who?"

She walked closer.

"I'm the first."

My heart stopped.

"The first Inkbearer?"

She nodded.

"You are the seventh version of me."

I stared at her.

"But why?"

"Because the System couldn't kill the original."

"What does that mean?"

She raised her hand.

Ink flowed from her fingers.

The entire sky changed.

The red clouds became white.

The field became a city.

The city became a forest.

The forest became a castle.

Everything changed with a single movement.

I stared.

"You can rewrite reality."

She smiled.

"So can you."

"I don't know how."

"You do."

"No."

"You've been doing it since you were a child."

I remembered the monster.

The book.

The erased memory.

My breath caught.

"The monster..."

"That was the first time."

"What was?"

"You changed a story without understanding the consequences."

I shook my head.

"I erased it."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"You rewrote it."

A terrible realization formed.

"Then what happened to everyone else's memories?"

"You didn't erase their memories."

She looked toward the distant city.

"You rewrote the part where they remembered."

I couldn't breathe.

The girl touched my forehead.

Pain flashed through my mind.

Seven images appeared.

Seven lives.

Seven endings.

And in every single one—

One of the three men stood beside me.

Soren.

Lucien.

Caelum.

But there was something different.

In each life, the three men weren't the same.

Their personalities shifted.

Their roles changed.

Their memories changed.

But one thing remained.

The same black mark appeared on one of them.

A symbol shaped like an open eye.

I stared at it.

"Which one?"

The girl didn't answer.

"Which one carries the mark?"

She smiled sadly.

"That's what the System wants you to believe."

"What?"

"It wants you to choose."

"Choose what?"

"The villain."

The world around me began collapsing.

The girl stepped backward.

"Remember this, Elara."

"What?"

"Don't trust the person who tells you who the villain is."

The field shattered.

Her final words followed me.

"Because the real villain will never need to convince you."

---

I opened my eyes.

I was back in the room.

Lucien was holding my shoulders.

"Elara."

I blinked.

"What happened?"

"You disappeared."

"What?"

"For almost three minutes."

I looked at Caelum.

He was staring at me.

"What did you see?"

I hesitated.

"A girl."

"Who?"

"The First Inkbearer."

The room became silent.

Orien's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

"You saw her?"

I nodded.

"What did she say?"

I looked toward the blank white book still in my hands.

"She said the System wants me to choose the villain."

Lucien's face hardened.

"And?"

I swallowed.

"She said not to trust anyone who tells me who the villain is."

Caelum looked toward Orien.

"Convenient."

Orien sighed.

"You're beginning to understand."

"Understand what?"

"The city isn't simply a place."

He pointed toward the window.

"Look."

I turned.

The entire city was changing.

Buildings shifted.

Roads moved.

Books opened by themselves.

The people in the streets were no longer whispering.

They were running.

A bell began ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Then continuously.

System text appeared in the sky.

«[CITY MEMORY RECONSTRUCTION: 12%]»

«[13%]»

«[14%]»

The number kept increasing.

Orien's face went pale.

"It's happening too quickly."

"What is?"

"The city is remembering."

"Why is that bad?"

"Because when it reaches one hundred percent..."

He looked directly at me.

"...the seventh life will become complete."

I stared at him.

"What happens then?"

He didn't answer.

Lucien did.

"We find out which one of us killed you."

Silence.

I looked at him.

Then at Caelum.

Then toward the distant horizon.

Soren.

He was missing.

And suddenly, I remembered something.

A detail from the memory.

In six of the seven lives—

Soren, Lucien, and Caelum stood beside me.

But in the seventh...

There was only one figure.

A man covered in black ink.

His face was hidden.

And beside him—

I was smiling.

Not afraid.

Not trapped.

Smiling.

As though I had chosen him.

My blood ran cold.

"No."

Lucien noticed.

"What?"

"I remembered something else."

Caelum stepped closer.

"What?"

I looked at them.

"The seventh life."

"What about it?"

I slowly shook my head.

"I wasn't fighting the Inkshaded One."

Lucien's expression changed.

"Then what were you doing?"

I whispered the answer.

"I was standing beside him."

The bell outside stopped.

The city became completely silent.

Then every window in every building turned black.

A voice echoed across the streets.

A voice I recognized.

Soren.

"Elara."

My heart stopped.

His voice came from everywhere.

From the buildings.

From the roads.

From the books.

From the sky.

"Did you miss me?"

Lucien immediately reached for his weapon.

Caelum moved closer to me.

Orien whispered something I couldn't hear.

Then the black windows began displaying the same image.

Soren.

Standing in the center of the city.

His eyes were completely black.

Ink moved slowly across his face.

But he wasn't alone.

Behind him stood the Inkshaded One.

And for one impossible second—

their silhouettes overlapped perfectly.

The System appeared.

«[WARNING]»

«[ENTITY RESONANCE DETECTED.]»

«[INKSHaded SIGNATURE: 98%]»

«[SOUL CONNECTION: UNRESOLVED]»

Then another line appeared.

«[DO NOT TRUST THE FACE.]»

I stared at the message.

My heart hammered.

Because beneath it—

another sentence appeared.

One that wasn't from the System.

One written in my own handwriting.

«HE IS NOT THE VILLAIN.»

I stopped breathing.

The message disappeared.

And Soren smiled from every window in the city.

"Come find me, Elara."

Then every book in the city opened at once.

And the first page of every book contained the same sentence:

THE SEVENTH STORY HAS BEGUN.
