Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Inkbearer Primary

Elara's POV

The first thing I noticed was the sound.

Not a scream.

Not an alarm.

A heartbeat.

Slow.

Deep.

Coming from somewhere beneath the Archive.

Thump.

The floor trembled.

Thump.

The ink beneath my feet spread farther.

Thump.

And then the entire room went silent.

I stared at the glowing symbol beneath me.

It wasn't something I had drawn.

It wasn't something I remembered seeing.

Yet somehow...

I knew what it meant.

My fingers curled into fists.

"Why does it know me?"

Nobody answered.

Lucien was staring at the symbol.

Caelum had stepped in front of me.

And Soren—

Soren looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Terrified.

That frightened me more than anything else.

"Soren."

He didn't move.

"Soren!"

His eyes finally met mine.

"What?"

"What is Inkbearer Primary?"

His jaw tightened.

"I don't know."

I stared at him.

"You just looked like you did."

"I said I don't know."

The sharpness in his voice made me step back.

Before I could respond, the system appeared.

Not in front of my eyes like before.

This time, it appeared across the entire chamber.

Letters of glowing black ink covered the walls.

«[ARCHIVE CORE: ACCESSING PRIMARY RECORD]»

«[IDENTITY CONFIRMED]»

«[INKBEARER PRIMARY: ELARA SELWYN]»

«[ORIGINAL STATUS: SEALED]»

«[CURRENT STATUS: AWAKENING]»

My breath caught.

"Original status?"

The letters changed.

«[WARNING]»

«[PRIMARY RECORD CONTAINS FORBIDDEN INFORMATION.]»

«[ACCESS WILL ALTER EXISTING STORY STRUCTURE.]»

Lucien immediately looked at me.

"Don't access it."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Because the system just warned you."

"I've been warned by the system approximately a hundred times since I entered this place."

"Elara."

His voice was different.

Serious.

"That warning isn't like the others."

I looked back at the wall.

The final line appeared.

«[WOULD YOU LIKE TO REMEMBER?]»

Two choices appeared beneath it.

YES.

NO.

I stared at them.

A strange pressure built behind my eyes.

Remember what?

My childhood?

The book?

Aryn?

The Inkshaded One?

Soren?

Something deeper?

I didn't know.

And that was the problem.

I was tired of not knowing.

I reached toward YES.

Caelum caught my wrist.

"Wait."

I looked at him.

His expression was unusually tense.

"You don't know what you'll remember."

"I don't know what I've already forgotten."

He didn't answer.

I slowly pulled my hand free.

"That's exactly why I need to do this."

I touched the word.

YES.

The Archive exploded with light.

---

For a moment, there was nothing.

No sound.

No floor.

No people.

No body.

Only darkness.

Then—

A page appeared.

A single white page floating in the darkness.

There was writing on it.

My handwriting.

I recognized it instantly.

But I had never written those words.

«If you're reading this, something has gone wrong.»

My heart stopped.

The page continued.

«You are not the first Elara.»

I froze.

Another sentence appeared.

«You are the seventh.»

"No."

The word escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

The page continued.

«The first six failed.»

Images flashed around me.

Six girls.

Six versions of me.

One stood inside the Masked Court.

Another was surrounded by burning books.

Another wore the white mask.

Another stood before the Inkshaded One.

Another was crying beside a broken mirror.

The sixth—

I couldn't see her face.

She was completely covered in ink.

Then the seventh image appeared.

Me.

The present me.

I stumbled backward.

"No..."

A voice whispered behind me.

"Now you understand."

I turned.

The Inkshaded One stood there.

No mask.

No shadow.

Just a man standing in the darkness.

His expression wasn't mocking this time.

It was almost sad.

"You were never brought into the story."

I stared at him.

"You were returned to it."

My throat went dry.

"Returned?"

He nodded.

"You've lived this story before."

The darkness trembled.

"Six times."

I shook my head.

"That's impossible."

"Inside your world, perhaps."

He took one step toward me.

"But this place has never followed the rules of your world."

Images began appearing around us.

A girl entering the book.

The same girl facing the Masked Court.

The same girl meeting three men.

The same girl reaching the Archive.

The same girl failing.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Each time, something changed.

One girl trusted Lucien.

Another trusted Caelum.

Another trusted Soren.

One tried to destroy the system.

Another tried to save it.

One chose the Masked Court.

One chose the villain.

And every single time—

The story ended.

Badly.

I covered my ears.

"Stop."

The images continued.

"STOP!"

Everything went silent.

The Inkshaded One looked at me.

"You always say that."

I lowered my hands.

"What?"

"You always ask them to stop."

His eyes darkened.

"And then you always forget."

I stared at him.

Something about his voice felt familiar.

Not familiar like someone I had met.

Familiar like a song I'd heard as a child.

Something I had forgotten I knew.

"Who are you?"

He smiled faintly.

"You still haven't figured it out."

The darkness cracked.

A system notification appeared between us.

«[HIDDEN MEMORY RESTORED: 3%]»

«[SUBJECT: THE FIRST INKBEARER]»

«[ERROR: MEMORY CORRUPTED]»

«[RECONSTRUCTION REQUIRED]»

I stared at the words.

"First Inkbearer..."

The Inkshaded One looked away.

"Not yet."

"What does that mean?"

"You'll understand when you meet the person who wrote the first ending."

"Who?"

He looked back at me.

"You."

The world disappeared.

---

I woke up on the floor.

My head hurt.

My hands were shaking.

The Archive was back.

Lucien was kneeling beside me.

"Elara!"

I blinked.

His face slowly came into focus.

"What happened?"

"You collapsed."

"How long?"

"Maybe thirty seconds."

Thirty seconds.

It felt like hours.

Caelum was standing nearby, watching me carefully.

Soren was nowhere to be seen.

I pushed myself upright.

"Where's Soren?"

Lucien's expression changed.

"He disappeared."

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

"He was standing there when the Archive activated."

Caelum spoke quietly.

"Then the system expelled him."

"Why?"

Neither answered.

I looked toward the center of the chamber.

The ink mirror was glowing again.

But this time, there was a new symbol on its surface.

A black crown.

Underneath it was a single word.

SOREN.

I stared at it.

Then the system appeared.

«[PARTY MEMBER STATUS UPDATED]»

«[SOREN — LOCATION UNKNOWN]»

«[CONNECTION TO INKSHADDED ENTITY: 47%]»

Lucien's face went pale.

Caelum clenched his jaw.

I stared at the number.

Forty-seven percent.

"What does that mean?"

Lucien didn't answer.

"Lucien."

He looked at me.

"It means..."

He hesitated.

"...Soren isn't completely human anymore."

Silence.

My heart sank.

"Then what is he?"

The Archive answered for him.

Every book on every shelf opened simultaneously.

Pages turned.

Ink poured from them.

And one sentence appeared across the walls.

«THE VILLAIN IS NOT THE ONE YOU THINK.»

I stared at the words.

Three names appeared beneath them.

LUCIEN.

CAELUM.

SOREN.

Then—

All three names were crossed out.

A fourth name appeared.

Mine.

My blood ran cold.

«[MAIN ANTAGONIST IDENTIFICATION: FAILED]»

«[REASON: HOST AND ANTAGONIST SHARE ORIGIN.]»

I couldn't breathe.

"Share origin?"

The system continued.

«[PRIMARY INKBEARER HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED.]»

«[NEXT ARC UNLOCKED.]»

«THE CITY OF UNWRITTEN STORIES»

The Archive doors opened.

Beyond them was not another corridor.

It was a city.

A massive city stretching farther than I could see.

Buildings made of books.

Roads written in glowing ink.

People walking beneath floating pages.

And above the city—

A gigantic clock.

Its hands were moving backward.

Lucien stood beside me.

"That's impossible."

Caelum stared into the distance.

"That city was erased centuries ago."

I looked at them.

"Then why is it here?"

Neither answered.

A final system message appeared.

«[WELCOME, INKBEARER PRIMARY.]»

«[ARC TWO: THE CITY OF UNWRITTEN STORIES.]»

«[OBJECTIVE: FIND THE STORY THAT WAS NEVER WRITTEN.]»

«[WARNING: SOMEONE INSIDE THE CITY REMEMBERS ALL SEVEN LIVES.]»

I stared at the impossible city.

For the first time since entering the book, I wasn't wondering whether I could escape.

I was wondering something far worse.

What if I had never entered this story for the first time?

What if...

I had written it?

And what if the reason I couldn't remember—

was because someone had made sure I forgot?

I stepped through the Archive doors.

The moment my foot touched the city's ink-covered road, the clock above us stopped.

Then it struck thirteen.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Until the thirteenth chime echoed across the entire city.

Every person below stopped walking.

Every face turned toward me.

And every single one of them whispered the same word.

"Finally."

My blood ran cold.

They knew me.

All of them.

And somewhere among those thousands of faces...

Someone laughed.

A laugh I had heard before.

A laugh from a life I couldn't remember.
