When Lillian returned home, she found her mother on the couch, resting lazily. Grace was intoxicated, her flushed cheeks and dazed eyes providing the signs.

From the content of the novel, it was written Grace worked at a bar. Although Eva's perspective made it seem like Grace worked at a degrading position— serving drinks to and seducing old man for extra tips— Lillian couldn't picture the woman doing those jobs.
