The corridor leading to the engine room becomes a gauntlet of fire and steel. Cyborgs pour from every junction, their red eyes blazing with mindless fury. They throw themselves at the group with reckless abandon, desperate to protect the beating heart of their island.
Marya leads the charge, Nisshoku singing through the air. Each stroke claims a cyborg—a severed limb here, a bisected torso there. She moves with the fluid grace of a predator, her raven hair streaming behind her like a banner of war. "Keep moving! We're almost there!"
Bō-Zak fights alongside her, his sickles dancing in the crimson emergency glow. He ducks under a cyborg's swinging arm, drives his blade into its throat, and spins to face the next. "So I couldn't help but notice—"
Marya cuts down a cyborg mid-sentence. "Notice what?"
"You and that Law guy." Bō-Zak's smirk is audible even through the chaos. "There's something there, isn't there?"
Marya moves ahead, her voice sharp. "This way."
Bō-Zak's smirk widens. "Like I thought."
Ember's cackle echoes through the corridor. Her Sparkler Rounds find targets with manic precision, each explosion sending cyborg parts scattering across the floor. "Boom boom boom! Josiah says this is fun!" She spins, pirouettes, launches another round at a cluster of approaching enemies. "More! More! MORE!"
Jannali's spear Gosan extends, the Hatzegopteryx head snapping at the cyborgs with prehistoric fury. The ancient predator's jaws close around a cyborg's torso, and the creature comes apart in a shower of sparks and hydraulic fluid. The Hatzegopteryx head chomps down on a bad spot, then pauses—shaking its head violently as it attempts to spit out the foul-tasting fluid.
Jannali's brow furrows. "What's wrong, mate?"
The Hatzegopteryx head turns back to her, its massive skull shaking as it tries to cough up the black ichor. Gosan's form shimmers, the dinosaur head retracting back into a regular spear.
Shachi's voice carries over the chaos. "Looks like it ate something it didn't like."
Jannali nods, her jaw tightening. "Right then. I'll just have to do this the old fashioned way." She adjusts her grip on Gosan, settling into a more traditional stance.
Marya's voice cuts through the noise. "Jannali! Make sure Ember keeps up!"
Jannali curses under her breath, reaching out to grab Ember by the arm and pulling her away from her manic shooting spree. "Come on, you bloody menace!"
Ember pouts, her mismatched eyes wide with protest. "But boom booms..."
Jannali drags her forward. "Boom boom later. We've got work to do."
Uni's voice carries a note of concern as he cuts down a cyborg. "Is she alright?"
Jannali's reply is flat. "Nah, mate. She's a bit short of a sheet."
---
The engine room doors loom before them—massive, ancient, scarred by centuries of use. They're already open, as if inviting the intruders inside.
The group files in, and the sight stops them cold.
The space is cathedral-like, a vast chamber of twisted metal and glowing conduits. Two massive turbines dominate the center, their blades spinning with a rhythm that echoes the heartbeat of the island itself. Cables hang from the ceiling like jungle vines. Steam hisses from ruptured pipes. The air is thick with heat and the smell of burning oil.
Jannali's voice echoes in the vast space. "Bloody hell."
A figure emerges from the shadows.
He's massive—easily nine feet tall, with the broad, thick build of a basking shark fishman. His skin is dark grayish-blue, rough like shark skin, with pale spotted patterns across his chest and arms. Three gill slits line each side of his neck. His head is broad and flattened, his dark eyes round and gentle—the eyes of a man who never wanted to be a warrior.
But his left side tells a different story.
His left eye is cybernetic—a mechanical construct that clicks and whirs as it focuses on the intruders. His left arm is a rotating magazine of tools, currently configured as a massive wrench. His left leg is reinforced with metal plating, a stabilizing brace visible beneath his torn trousers. And across his back, visible through the gaps in his worn leather apron, the seams of a hidden weapons system.
Shuji Mayoi blinks. His cybernetic eye clicks, swapping to a magnifying lens. His head tilts, and a faint smile crosses his features.
"Are you here to pick up your order?"
The group tilts their heads in unison.
Shuji continues, his voice a deep, steady hum. "Baked fresh today." He gestures vaguely with his wrench-hand. "I have a recipe for a cupcake with cream. It's... it's a good recipe. The cream must be whipped to stiff peaks. Not too stiff. Just stiff enough."
He glitches.
His whole body gyrates, his cybernetic eye spinning wildly. His voice distorts, fragments, reassembles. "INTRUDER ALERT. SECURITY PROTOCOLS ACTIVATED."
His eyes glow red.
Shachi's hand goes to his blade. "Are we supposed to—"
Shuji charges.
Uni meets him head-on, his blade flashing. "That's more like it!"
Bō-Zak surveys the massive turbines, his pipe still smoldering between his fingers. "It looks like we'll need more than a wrench to break this place."
Marya nods, her hand falling to Nisshoku's hilt. She doesn't speak. She simply moves.
The blade comes up. The arc of Haki sweeps across the chamber like a physical force—vast, crushing, absolute. It forces everyone to their knees, their hands flying to their heads, their teeth gritting against the pressure.
Shachi yells, his hat nearly flying off. "TELL US WHEN YOU'RE GOING TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT!"
Marya's smirk is visible through the chaos. "Duck."
The space goes silent.
Then the air fills with the sound of screeching metal.
The massive gears begin to slide—slowly at first, then faster—their supports severed cleanly by Marya's strike. They plummet toward the floor with earth-shaking force, each one crashing into the next in a cascade of destruction.
Marya looks over her shoulder at Ember. "Boom boom."
Ember's grin spreads across her face, wide and manic.
Jannali's voice carries a note of exhaustion. "Do you really have to encourage her?"
Shuji falls into a heap as Uni rejoins the group, his blade still dripping with hydraulic fluid.
Ember lights the place up.
Explosions rock the chamber. Flames lick at the walls. The turbines groan, their blades seizing as the fire consumes their supports.
Marya's voice cuts through the chaos. "Everyone, move! This place is about to—"
The first explosion cuts her off.
The group spins, running for the exit. Jannali drags Ember behind her, the manic girl cackling with each step. Flames chase them like hungry beasts.
Bō-Zak's voice carries a note of genuine concern. "That's a little overkill, don't you think?"
Marya's smirk is visible even in the chaos. "I like to be thorough."
She looks back at the inferno behind them, her eyes tracking the destruction with cold satisfaction. Then she turns forward, her voice rising above the roar of the flames.
