Chapter 122: The First Date
Saturday.
It was the date of Sakurai Saki and Hayasaka Ai.
Their first date.
It was supposed to be a perfect experience—
So how the hell did it end up like this?
Why?!
"Dear humans, we're only here to rob money, not to kill anyone, so relax, okay~!"
"Stay down and don't move. We read the human laws—so long as we don't kill anyone, at most it's like a decade or so in prison."
Right now, Sakurai Saki was squatting among a group of innocent civilians, expressionless, observing a bunch of red-and-black-skinned demons robbing a jewelry store.
"Yo! Bro, what are we supposed to do now?"
Beside Sakurai Saki, a brown-skinned guy whispered.
"Just wait to be fucked and your soul will dissipate." Sakurai Saki replied irritably.
"Damn, Bro, good bet!" The guy praised him instinctively.
'This dude must be a mole planted among the hostages. He's way too into rap,' Sakurai Saki cursed silently.
These demons from the Demon World were pulling all sorts of bullshit, but could they at least not walk around with such loud red-black skin tones?
Damn it, what kind of twisted luck was this—to have something like this happen on the very first date?!
Yesterday, Gabriel had just talked to him about those low-class demons who liked rap possibly showing up. Who would've thought he'd run into them the very next day?
And right in the middle of a bustling shopping district.
This place specialized in jewelry, and the shop they were robbing was the biggest one in the area.
'Can you guys just rob quickly and get lost already?' Sakurai Saki had no hopes for the police.
Thankfully, these low-class demons were only stealing money, not killing anyone, or else today's date would be totally ruined.
Given the situation, Sakurai Saki couldn't make a move either—otherwise he wouldn't have peace for days.
"Bro, should we save everyone?"
"Save what? These people don't even have money. Just let them go already. Besides, you're supposed to be a hostage right now—could you act the part properly?" Sakurai Saki said with irritation.
These low-class demons were insulting his intelligence! He couldn't stand it.
"Ah, right, you're smart as always."
The undercover robber nodded frantically.
"We love smart people like you."
Sakurai Saki was getting the strong sense that these guys were brain-damaged.
The Demon World was finished.
A few minutes later—
The masked robbers easily left the jewelry store without harming a single human.
Except for Sakurai Saki, who got dragged off with a hood over his head.
Ten minutes later—
In the backseat of a speeding van.
Knock knock! Sakurai Saki tapped on the side of the van.
"Let me out."
"Yoyo~ human, don't shout, or you might lose your life~"
Next to him, one of the kidnappers with demon horns began freestyling.
Sakurai Saki gritted his teeth, clenching his fists.
"Bro, we brought you along to be our strategist. We're not too familiar with the land around here."
"I'm an angel! I'll call someone to come kill all of you right now!" Sakurai Saki yelled furiously.
After shouting, he pulled out his phone and, face expressionless, texted Gabriel.
"Chill, man, we know you're in a rush, but don't be hasty!"
The brown-skinned demon kept talking.
"Even if you're in a hurry, it's useless. Bro, why not think about how we can escape?"
Sakurai Saki rubbed his forehead in frustration.
"Let me ask first—why did you rob so much jewelry?"
"We heard jewelry is valuable, so we stole it to sell," another demon chimed in.
The tiny van was crammed with over a dozen demons—it was unbearably cramped.
"Where do you plan to sell it?"
"Haven't thought about it."
"What are you going to do with the money?"
"Haven't thought about it."
"Do you have any dreams?"
"Uhh… nah, maybe buy some potato chips."
"Not that—I mean big dreams. Like, life goals."
"Uhh… still probably potato chips."
Sakurai Saki fell silent.
These guys had no dream beyond eating fries. What a bunch of salted fish!
There was less than half an hour left before his scheduled date with Hayasaka Ai.
If he showed up late on the first date—especially as the guy—he'd have no excuse! A few years from now, she'd probably still tease him about it.
"So basically, you guys didn't think it through, didn't plan anything, and just started robbing?" Sakurai Saki had just finished speaking——
The sound of police sirens rang out from behind.
This time, the police had finally reacted—most likely because Gabriel had intervened.
"Have you ever heard of Socrates? A pretty famous Greek philosopher."
The demons shook their heads.
Who? Never heard of him.
"He was a great sage, someone who attained enlightenment and came to understand the way of life," Sakurai Saki smiled. "I also have a place that can help you 'attain enlightenment'~"
"Where?" the demons asked excitedly.
A philosopher? That had to be some serious stuff.
"Far away in the horizon, but right beneath your feet—it's the very road you're standing on!" Sakurai Saki sneered.
With that, he stomped down hard——
The kick crushed the floor of the van, leaving a hole.
The vehicle rocked violently. The demon driving didn't react in time and the van skidded out of control.
"Go find your enlightenment in jail—work that sewing machine properly. Understand what a demon ought to do before you come back out!" Sakurai Saki shouted, then pushed the door open as the van came to a rough stop.
His figure vanished from sight in an instant.
A short distance away, Sakurai Saki reappeared from invisibility.
Luckily, his ability today was invisibility—otherwise those dumbasses would've wasted a ton of his time.
...
Not far from there, a passerby rubbed his eyes.
Just now, he thought he saw a floating outfit walking from the street into an alley.
Due to a side effect of the ability, Sakurai Saki's clothes couldn't turn invisible—so the man had accidentally caught a glimpse of that bizarre sight.
"Probably just seeing things, huh?" the man scratched his head.
The area ahead had already been cordoned off—word was there'd been a robbery…
————
Inside the shopping mall.
Thirty minutes later, Hayasaka Ai appeared, wearing a white sailor blouse and black pleated skirt. She looked incredibly pure and elegant.
Hayasaka: (❀ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ꕤ*.゚
She finally spotted Sakurai Saki.
She pretended to stay calm and gently brushed her bangs with her right hand—a graceful, lady-like gesture.
"Sorry I'm late," Sakurai Saki said, panting slightly.
Hayasaka Ai softly shook her head. "I just got here too."
Even though he was late, she didn't want to make him feel bad.
"Sorry, something personal held me up."
"What happened?"
"Just… helping someone 'attain enlightenment'!" Sakurai Saki said, getting angrier the more he thought about it.
Ai-chan's voice lifted slightly as she chuckled, apparently amused by his joke. She seemed to be in a very good mood.
"The movie hasn't started yet. Want to grab something to eat first? I'm a little hungry."
Sakurai Saki nodded.
Then added, "You look really good today. Different from your usual style, but both are amazing."
Girls dress up to be complimented—never be stingy with compliments.
"Thanks for noticing. Looks like you've got some taste," Hayasaka Ai said, taking his hand.
"Of course. You're my girlfriend, after all—no amount of compliments would be too much."
Sakurai Saki hesitated for a few seconds, then gripped her hand in return.
Ai-chan's hand was small and soft.
For some reason, the two of them stood frozen for a moment.
This was their first time holding hands seriously, like a real couple.
Ten fingers intertwined.
Their hearts raced, their breathing grew slightly erratic.
They both felt it.
"It's only when holding hands like this that I realize—we really are a couple now," Sakurai Saki whispered.
They had held hands before, even before dating—but it had never made their hearts pound like this.
"You only just figured that out? You dummy! Were you actually planning to reject me back then?" Hayasaka Ai teased sweetly.
It was basically her acting spoiled.
"How could I? You confessed to me twice already. If I still turned you down, that'd just be rude."
Sakurai Saki fidgeted with his free hand, clearly nervous.
"Besides, I like you too. There's no reason to say no."
He'd finally said it—the words "I like you"—something he'd wanted to say for a while but hadn't found the right chance.
"Huhu, you like me, huh?"
The corners of Hayasaka Ai's lips curved into a soft, adorable smile.
"I've known for a long time." Ai-chan said smugly.
Then, she pulled him forward.
"You've known for a long time?" Sakurai Saki quickly stepped to keep up with her.
"Did I ever say that?"
"That's a secret~"
If she hadn't already been certain of his feelings, Ai-chan never would've confessed so easily.
After all, she wasn't the kind of girl to be casual about things like that.
...
Note: For a moment, I seriously considered slapping an 18+ tag on this chapter.
