Chapter 141 – The Test of Loyalty
The storm had passed, but the tension in the air hadn't.
The ash from the destroyed rogue camp still hung faintly in the breeze. Ember stood beside the charred ruins, her eyes reflecting the gray sky above. The air was heavy, thick with the scent of burnt earth and betrayal. Behind her, the pack warriors worked in silence, dragging out any surviving documents, remnants of maps, or signs that might indicate the next rogue movement.
Xander stepped beside her, his arm brushing against hers. "We did what we had to."
Ember didn't speak. She could still hear the screams. Smell the blood.
And worst of all, she could still feel Kai's anger before he disappeared into the forest with a dozen elite guards. He had refused to listen to reason. He was convinced that Ember's refusal to execute the rogue leader—despite the latter being unconscious and bound—meant her loyalty was split.
But it wasn't loyalty. It was something else.
