Chapter 37: Whispers Beneath the Moonlit Sky
The fire crackled softly in the center of the open glade, its glow brushing gently against the faces gathered around it. They had traveled far today—through moss-covered ruins, through forests that whispered of the old world. Now they rested, encircled by trees older than memory, their branches arched like cathedral vaults.
Riku sat silently at the edge of the camp, his gaze fixed on the sky. The stars shimmered with cold clarity, and the moon hung low, a silver guardian watching over the forgotten earth.
Airi approached quietly, sitting beside him with her arms wrapped around her knees.
"You're quiet tonight," she said.
Riku didn't look away. "Something feels... off. Like the wind is carrying voices I can't understand."
Airi tilted her head. "You mean like magic?"
He shook his head. "No. Older than that. Like memories that don't belong to me."

A Flashback: The Forgotten Lesson
In the silence, Riku's mind slipped back to a moment he rarely let surface. He was twelve. His brother stood before him, bloodied but smiling, as they hid in the ruins of a collapsed temple.
"Not all truths are meant to be known," his brother whispered. "But one day, you'll hear them whisper anyway. That's when you'll have to decide if you're ready to listen."
Riku blinked away the memory.

Across the fire, Toma, the group's newest ally and an enigmatic traveler from the floating cities of Zyra, leaned closer to the flames, his fingers tracing symbols in the dirt.
"There are things in this forest that remember the Forbidden Era," Toma said suddenly. His voice was calm, but heavy with weight. "Places where time folds."
Yuna stirred, her curiosity piqued. "Like what?"
Toma looked up, his eyes reflecting the firelight. "There's a ruin nearby. One that only appears under a blood moon. It is said to be a vault of forgotten truths."
"And it's here?" Riku asked.
Toma nodded slowly. "Not far. Maybe a day's journey through the Veiled Hollows."

In the Depths of the Hollows
The next morning, the group set off with a mix of excitement and dread. The Veiled Hollows lived up to its name. Fog hung low and thick, swallowing sound and light. Strange shapes loomed just out of sight.
At one point, Sora, their archer, swore he saw something white flicker through the trees. But when they turned to look, there was only silence.
Hours passed. The path twisted and turned as if the forest itself were trying to disorient them. They kept going.
Then, as twilight began to settle, they saw it.
A great stone archway half-sunken into the earth. Vines curled around its base. Carvings, ancient and undecipherable, covered every inch.
"This wasn't here a moment ago," Airi murmured.
Toma stepped forward, pressing his hand against the stone.
It pulsed.
And then, the archway shimmered, revealing a stairwell spiraling downward into darkness.

The Vault of Echoes
Inside, the air was thick and cold. The walls were etched with murals—scenes of floating cities, of beasts made of starlight, of people bowing before a masked figure.
"That figure again," Riku whispered. "We saw it in the ruins of Elaron."
As they delved deeper, the atmosphere grew heavier. Some corridors seemed to echo with whispered names. Others flickered like mirages.
At the end of one hall, they found a chamber.
In its center: a pedestal.
And resting atop it... a feather.
But not just any feather. It shimmered blue and silver, as if made of light.
Riku stepped forward. The moment he touched it, a surge of energy flooded him—memories not his own, voices screaming, and through it all...
A name:
0169.
He stumbled back, breathless.
Airi rushed to his side. "What happened?"
"I... I don't know. It felt like something... woke up."
From above, they heard a rumble. The ruins began to tremble.
"We need to go. Now!" Toma shouted.
They sprinted back up the stairs as the vault collapsed behind them, sealing away its truths once more.

Nightfall and Wounds
That night, as they camped again under the open sky, Riku lay awake.
He thought about the masked figure. About the feather. About the name 0169.
He felt watched.
Not by a creature. But by the story itself, as if it had just turned a page, revealing a deeper chapter no one was prepared for.
"Are you afraid?" Airi asked softly beside him.
Riku hesitated. Then:
"Yes. But not of what I saw. I'm afraid... because I think this was just the beginning."
The stars above shimmered brighter, as if in agreement.
