Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The Weight of Truths

Chapter 36: The Weight of Truths

The moonlight shimmered upon the ancient trees, silver veins tracing the edges of every leaf. The campfire crackled softly, casting dancing shadows on the ground. For a moment, it seemed like peace had returned to the group—until the silence grew too loud.

Rai sat with his arms crossed, eyes locked onto the glowing embers. "So, are we just going to ignore the fact that the ruins we explored were marked with the same symbol on our hands?" he asked quietly.

Kael looked up, his voice hoarse. "It wasn't just a ruin. That place... it reacted to us. The whisper, the sudden light. It knew us."

Arin, sitting a little apart with the white-furred monkey creature—now affectionately named Shirou—nuzzling her side, looked visibly shaken. "What if we're part of something much bigger? What if it's not just about stopping the future villain?"

Shira reached into her satchel and pulled out a small shard of crystal she had retrieved from the glowing stone chamber earlier that day. "These crystals were used as conduits, that much I could tell. But the energy within them is alive. It's not just magic—it's memory."

Kael narrowed his eyes. "Memory?"

"Yes." She placed the shard near the firelight. Faint blue pulses flickered across its surface. "I heard a voice. Faint, like a song half-remembered. And it called me by name."

Rai's fists clenched. "No more hiding things from each other. We've been wandering too long in the dark. We need to talk about the visions. The dreams. The voice from the marks."

A tense stillness followed his words.

Flashback – Kael's Vision (Several Nights Ago)

A garden filled with lavender mist, and a figure in golden robes standing beside a stone monument marked '0169'. The voice spoke gently:

"You were not sent, Kael. You were chosen. The memory of the past has not faded—it has simply hidden from the unworthy."

The monument cracked, and vines twisted upward, spelling words he did not understand but felt deeply within his soul: Awaken what was forgotten.

---

Kael shared his vision aloud. As he spoke, Arin's lips parted in shock. "I saw the same monument. But mine was shattered, and the vines were dead."

"Maybe it shows us our role differently," Shira whispered. "Maybe we each carry a part of the truth."

As they debated, Shirou the monkey chirped, standing alert. His four tails shimmered faintly, and he stared into the darkness beyond the fire.

The woods stirred.

Out of the shadows emerged a hunched figure cloaked in moss and feathers. Its eyes glowed blue like the ruins.

"Don't move," Shira hissed.

The figure stepped forward and raised a trembling hand. "You who bear the mark... the Epoch Guardians..."

Rai sprang to his feet. "Who are you?"

"I am Kareth. Once a Chronicler of the Forbidden Era. I've waited centuries for the return of your kind."

Inner Monologue – Arin

Is this it? Are we finally learning why we were sent here? My heart feels like it's racing out of time. And yet, this feels right... like destiny.

---

Kareth knelt slowly and pointed at their marks. "You must find the Eyes of the Sky—the artifacts that saw the first betrayal. Only then will the Gate of 0169 open."

Kael stepped forward. "What gate? What betrayal?"

Kareth looked up, eyes full of sorrow. "You live in the shadow of a forgotten war. A war that tore time apart. The villain you seek isn't the true enemy—he's just a herald of what lies beyond."

Rai's voice cracked. "Then who is the real enemy?"

Kareth turned toward the fire, his shadow flickering. "Time itself."

---

Detailed Setting: The Sacred Hollow

The group followed Kareth through twisted groves into a circular hollow with a dome of interwoven trees. Luminous moths glowed above, illuminating faded murals on the bark. These murals depicted a vast battle between glowing beings and dark silhouettes—each bearing ancient runes.

Shira traced the symbols with reverence. "This is where it began..."

Kareth nodded. "And where it might end."

Multiple Perspectives and Tension

Kael: So much weight on our shoulders. But for once, we're not blind.

Rai: I still don't trust this ancient. But that fire in his eyes… it matches the one in my nightmares.

Arin: Shirou's warm fur against my hand is the only thing keeping me grounded. I feel like I'm walking into a storm.

Shira: I've read of these places. But living them? It's like falling into myth.

---

As the night deepened, Kareth explained that the first Eye was hidden within the Ruins of El'Vahn—a city swallowed by time. He drew maps in the dirt, marked with stars and moons.

"You will face trials," he said. "Not just of strength, but of belief. Trust each other. The truth has teeth."

They slept under the glowing canopy, hearts heavy with the weight of what was to come. Yet hope glimmered like the embers of their fire.

And far away, a figure cloaked in smoke whispered into the night, "Soon they will remember. And when they do... I will rewrite fate."
