Chapter 5 - AMBUSHED

"Quest Initiation Complete"

Rex woke up to a feminine announcement, the last he could recall, he was been pulled towards a tiny swirl of colours.

"Ahhhh..!", He stretched all of his four limbs outward to their utmost limit, a force of habit. As he completed this routine. He pulled himself upward observing his surroundings.

He had woken up lying on damp foliage, and as far as his eyes could see, he was surrounded by trees and shrubby vegetation.

As he observed his immediate surroundings, his mind was suddenly assaulted by a splitting Ache, as he was suddenly pulled into a vision.

He saw a meteorite clash into a village, sending shockwaves all around the area. Then the vision changed; he saw a hand make contact with the meteorite. As the hand drew closer to the meteorite, tiny sparkles of electricity were generated between the hand and the meteorite. Then his vision ended.

"Ahh!!" Rex winced as he lay his back on a nearby tree for support. The moment his eyes were slightly closed, a countdown materialized into view.

10:57:33

"Time left, Until impact"

The feminine voice that had woken him up resounded, informing him of what the countdown signified.

"Doesn't seem to be that tough"

Rex spoke to himself as he analyzed the most recent events. The light entity had offered him a quest, a one-time deal "Overlord Quest", which he had accepted. After which he had woken up in his current location and had fallen into a brief trance where he had experienced some visions.

The visions he had, he felt an instinctive awareness that they were the tasks of his quest. A meteorite was going to make impact in a village, and he was going to have to make physical contact with the meteorite.

The countdown, based on the feminine voice input was the time left until the meteorite made contact.

. . .

"Grrrrrrrrrrr"

A deep grumbling sound, broke Rex's train of thought. He slowly turned to his back the direction of the sound.

His eyes met with scarlet coloured pupils, which sent a tingle borne from fear traveling down his spine. Further orienting himself he noticed that they weren't just two pupils, but six of them.

With two of each pupil belonging to very large wolves, which looked to be more than 150 meters in height, with each of their features seeming very humongous as compared to their earthly counterpart. Their furs were as dark as the intentions that their growl carried. Two of the wolves kept their eye strained on him, as they slowly spread out to encircle him.

While the last of these big dark wolves stared at him with a seething rage bubbling in its eyes.

The stature and demeanour of these wolves filled Rex with a sense of foreboding. Foreboding of certain loss. His mind was no longer present, analyzing the wolves. It was already chastizing him on how so stupid he was, to have accepted a quest that its failure was a ban from the greatest wonder of existence.

A sense of deep fatigue assaulted all of Rex's being. As he felt all enthusiasm and adventurous spirit slowly leak out from his being.

As he was slowly letting himself go to the feeling of loss, and the potential snackers of his being were taking the most savorous positions they could assume.

A sense of Deja vu assaulted Rex's being, "I have felt this way before". A single thought took root in his mind, and like a bait. It began to draw his wildly strewn thoughts, chasing towards a certain direction.

'Yes, this was helplessness'. A feeling he knew too well. A feeling he had come to have a very intimate relationship with after his parents' death. The feeling had nothing positive to offer, only regrets, pain and sadness.

As he recalled these thoughts, his fists formed balls. He had not failed yet. He couldn't let himself fall into the embrace of helplessness again.

"Stats' He voiced loudly.

A dark screen briefly pulsed in his view, bearing a single string of word.

"Temporaly Unavailable"

"Seriously!" he screamed.

It was an annoying discovery that in no way helped his course.

"Hey, Feminine voice any idea on how I can get out of this predicament?"

. . .

. . .

"Krip. .Krip . .Krip"

A low constant chirp was the only constant anomaly to the silence that followed Rex's question.

The three bestial foes, continued to study Rex. Their pose, gait and bearing fully conveying their hostile intention.

Rex braced himself, seems it was going to be a brutal fight. As he brought up his fist, an act of defiance to the brutal card his quest had dealt him. Dropping him like an express meal delivery to these three humongous wolves. He noticed for the first time thick ink-like markings that ran all across his hands. This observation prompted him to take proper notice of his current appearance.

He was feeling the cool breeze of the forest, a bit too much. He had been so occupied with the new environment he had found himself and his quest that he had not noticed that he was currently a bit too unclad. He briefly scanned his body, paying attention not to overlook the wolves.

The only piece of clothing he wore was a tight short that ran upto his mid thigh and tightly clung to his body. The short was black in colour with glyphic markings running all across it, offering a level of comfort that felt therapeutic. But apart from the brief, the only other covering he had, if it counted, were dark ink-like markings that ran all across his body.

Rex studied the black ink-like markings that covered his whole body. The only part of his body that was spared was his extremities (hands and feet) and face. The ink-like markings that ran across his body, did not depict any image; it felt more like a pastime symmetrical art created by a burnt-out architect..

"Brandings of the Overlord" the feminine voice resounded.

"So now you talk" Rex blurted out with a bit of annoyance.

"Chirp…Chirp…Chirp.." Silence.

"Swoosh!! Swoosh!!"

Two of the wolves dashed forward towards Rex, the two wolves that had earlier flanked him from both sides. All of the fleeting thoughts that had been occluding his mind were instantly dispelled.

As Rex concentrated on the advancing wolves, he fell into a familiar rhythm. A sensation were all his mind was in the present, focused on a singular task. Which at the moment was to not die in the claws of the advancing wolves.
