Chapter 231 - Chapter 231: Alice in Wonderland (4)

[Third Person Pov]

Robin gripped Danny firmly by the collar, hauling him along the shifting sands as Danny's feet dragged behind him, carving lazy trails in the golden grains. Despite the rough treatment, Danny clutched a colorful bag of candy tightly to his chest with one arm, the other waving enthusiastically at the bizarre parade of animal figures stationed behind them in a chaotic and joyful conga line.

"There's something seriously wrong with you," Robin muttered, rolling his eyes in exasperation. He kept his hold ironclad on Danny's collar, refusing to loosen it even for a second in case the unpredictable boy tried to slip away again.

"I was investigating," Danny replied with a harmless shrug.

"Oh yeah? And what exactly did you find, Sherlock Holmes?" Ember asked, flashing a playful sneer as she kept pace beside them.

Danny's expression shifted abruptly, his usual carefree demeanor vanishing as his tone turned dead serious. "We're trapped in an illusion," he said. "But we aren't the only ones."

Both Ember and Robin whipped their heads around to stare at him, blinking in genuine surprise. They hadn't expected anything resembling a serious answer from Danny, let alone one delivered with such grim intensity.

"I mean, it's obvious we're in an illusion," Robin said, finally releasing his grip on Danny's collar and helping him steady himself back on his feet. "I didn't think this place was real to begin with. But what do you mean, we're not the only ones?"

"Those animal figures over there aren't just decorations or parts of the illusion, I mean they are but…" Danny whispered, his voice low and grim as he glanced back at the conga line. "They're actual living people. I felt it the moment they touched me. The illusion might be able to warp most of our perceptions—sight, sound, touch, even time to some extent—but it can't completely warp intuition. I'm telling you, those people are alive in there."

Though visibly caught off guard, Robin recovered quickly. He studied the worrisome look etched across Danny's face and asked, "What's wrong?"

"They're alive, but only barely," Danny replied, his voice heavy with concern. He started touching his shoulders where he still felt the lingering sensation of their grip. "They're clinging to life by a thread. Who knows how long they've been trapped here, how long it's been since they last ate or drank anything. Their hands... they felt so bony, like they were wasting away right under the illusion's grip."

"In that case, we better do something about it fast," Robin said. His expression hardened with steely determination. He gave Danny a long, appraising look before nodding in clear respect. "Good work. Seriously."

"So how exactly do we exit this place and free all those people?" Ember asked. The playful edge in her voice had faded, replaced by a somber tone as she absorbed the gravity of the situation from Robin and Danny.

"We have to go to the Mad Hatter's tea party," Robin answered, glancing over his shoulder at the singing, shuffling crew still trailing behind them. "If this is anything like Alice in Wonderland, and this is the result of Mad Hatter and the ghost working together, then that's the most likely place we'll find the one responsible."

"And where exactly is this tea party?" Ember demanded, crossing her arms and shifting her hips with a hint of impatience. "It's not exactly like we got an engraved invitation to the place."

"We might not," Danny said, motioning toward the hazy distance with a nod of his head, "but he might."

Robin and Ember followed his gaze. There, hopping frantically along the edge of the shimmering sands, was a tall, anthropomorphic rabbit man dressed in a formal waistcoat. A gleaming monocle perched on his snout, and a slightly crooked top hat sat atop his head. He fumbled with a large pocket watch, checking it repeatedly as he exclaimed in a high-pitched, panicked voice, "I'm late! I'm late! I'm so, so, so late!"

They watched as the rabbit man dashed toward the dense line of twisted trees marking the beginning of the forest. The three companions exchanged quick, determined glances. Without another word, they broke into a run, chasing after the frantic figure.

"I know you two can run faster than that," Robin called out, running between them. "There's no need to hold back for my pace. Don't worry about me—I'll catch up!"

Danny and Ember turned to each other and nodded in perfect sync. They both took a decisive step forward, then exploded ahead with supernatural speed. The world around them blurred as they charged through the terrain far faster than Robin had anticipated, their forms cutting through the air like streaks of energy.

Robin reached into his utility belt without missing a beat and pulled out his grappling hook. With a sharp *thwip*, he fired it toward a sturdy overhead tree branch, swinging up into the canopy. He began leaping from tree to tree, his movements precise and efficient, keeping the rabbit in sight from above.

Meanwhile, Danny and Ember rushed through the forest side by side, their supernatural reflexes allowing them to navigate the dense undergrowth with astonishing skill and foresight. Low-hanging branches whipped past them harmlessly; roots and uneven ground posed no obstacle as they dodged and weaved in fluid harmony. Their arms pumped rhythmically, their breathing remained steady and controlled, and a shared sense of urgency fueled every powerful stride.

They caught up to the rabbit in record time, closing the distance with relentless determination. The forest grew thicker around them, filled with whispering leaves and strange, glowing flora, but nothing could slow their pursuit.

The Rabbit man glanced over his shoulder, his eyes widening in sheer terror at the two figures rapidly closing in. He let out a high-pitched, blood-curdling scream. "Ahhhhh!! Ghosts!!"

"We just want to talk to you!" Danny shouted. "Where's the Mad Hatter?!"

Danny and Ember were gaining fast, the gap between them shrinking with every stride. The Rabbit fumbled desperately with his pocket watch, nearly dropping it in his panic. "I can't stop! I'm so, so late! I have no time to stop!" he shrieked, his voice cracking with hysteria.

Danny reached out, fingers brushing the edge of the Rabbit's collar—until the Rabbit slammed his thumb down on the watch. In an instant, the world around the Rabbit blurred. He accelerated into a streak of motion, fast-forwarding through reality itself and gaining a massive lead in the blink of an eye.

"Did he just freaking fast-forward?!" Ember exclaimed, her voice laced with disbelief.

"Can you run any faster?!" Danny called out, the two of them still sprinting side by side through the dense forest.

"This is as fast as I can—Ahhh!" Ember yelped in surprise as Danny suddenly scooped her up into his arms, holding her close against his chest.

"Hold on!" he warned.

"Huh?" She barely had time to react, instinctively wrapping her arms around his neck and looking over his shoulder at the blurring scenery.

Danny exhaled sharply. His eyes flared with brilliant emerald light as he channeled his energy, enhancing every muscle and nerve in his body. The ground beneath his feet exploded outward in a shower of dirt and shattered stone as he launched forward like a human bullet.

The forest became a dizzying green tunnel. Trees whipped past them so quickly they blended into solid walls of color. Ember could only hold on tight, her hair streaming wildly behind her as Danny's eyes darted rapidly from side to side, calculating every movement with superhuman precision.

He began using the thick tree trunks as springboards, bouncing off them in a wild zigzagging pattern. Each powerful footfall left behind burning, sizzling imprints on the bark, smoke curling upward in his wake. The sheer force and speed of his enhanced movement made the air roar in their ears.

"I see him!" Danny growled, brows furrowed in concentration, his hair pushed back from the intense velocity.

The Rabbit man looked back again and screamed in renewed panic, his monocle nearly flying off his face.

"Work with me here, Em," Danny said, his voice focused and intense, gaze locked on the frantic rabbit. "I'm going to throw you so he doesn't have a chance to use that watch again."

"Em?" she repeated, an amused grin spreading across her face despite the chaos. She started snickering. "Alright then."

Ember stretched her legs out while still in Danny's grip, twisting and maneuvering herself around his head with surprising agility. Using the momentum she'd built, Danny grabbed her by the calf and hurled her forward with every ounce of his enhanced strength.

When the Rabbit looked over his shoulder this time, his eyes bulged comically behind his monocle. Ember was suddenly right in front of him, arms outstretched and a wild, manic grin splitting her face.

She tackled him hard. The two of them went tumbling violently across the forest floor in a chaotic tangle of limbs, bouncing and rolling over roots and fallen leaves until the Rabbit man slammed into a thick tree trunk. Leaves showered down around them as he slowly slid down the bark, dazed, his bunny ears flopping limply over his face.

Danny skidded to a dramatic stop beside them, boots carving grooves into the dirt. He quickly helped Ember back to her feet. "Sorry about that. Are you okay?"

"Ugh, I'm fine," Ember replied with a faint giggle, brushing dirt off her clothes. She was clearly enjoying herself far more than she wanted to admit. "Let's just never do that again."

"We're both awesome when we work together, don't you think?" Danny asked, flashing a light, confident smirk.

"Hell yeah we are!" Ember exclaimed, her face lighting up with a radiant grin.

The two shared an enthusiastic high-five before turning their attention back to their prize.

Danny crouched down, hands resting on his knees as he looked at the dazed Rabbit. "Well, wittle wabbit, now you're gonna tell us exactly where the Mad Hatter is—"

"Like I told you," the Rabbit man snarled, his fist curling tightly against the ground, "I'm going to be late!!"

Without warning, his fist shot upward in a vicious uppercut, catching Danny square on the chin. The impact was brutal—Danny's head snapped back violently, a spray of blood erupting from his mouth as he stumbled backward and landed hard on his rear.

"Danny!!" Ember cried out in alarm.

"Arghhh…" Danny groaned, massaging his aching jaw. "Well, ain't that a bitch…"

"Why you—!!" Ember growled furiously. Pale blue flames ignited around her clenched fists.

She didn't even get the chance to strike. The Rabbit man moved with surprising speed, his gloved fist already rocketing toward her face. Ember tumbled backward, tripping over an exposed root and crashing to the ground.

The Rabbit man rose to his full height, calmly adjusting his tailored suit and straightening his white gloves with precise, dignified movements. He looked down at the pair with an air of haughty impatience.

"Now, gentleman, and not-so-gentle lady," he said smoothly, "as I told you both—I am rather short on time and I simply cannot be late. I have a very important appointment to keep."
