Chapter 510 - Chapter 510: Pearl’s Thoughts

Chapter 510: Pearl's Thoughts

~Third POV~

[Sinnoh Region, Later, Route 212 (Southern Area)]

The constant patter of rain was a familiar symphony on Route 212's southern stretch, a rhythm that usually left travelers damp and chilled. But for Azure and his companions, the elements bowed to their will.

Leading the way with a calm assurance, Azure had his H-Liligant gracefully extending its leafy arms, casting a shimmering, emerald aura. He murmured, and the oppressive moisture in the air seemed to dissipate around them, forming a perfectly dry bubble, "Defog… such a handy move."

*Fwp*

Above, his majestic Dragonite soared, its powerful wings beating just enough to manipulate the lingering clouds, ensuring their personal micro-climate remained clear and comfortable. The group moved through the perpetually damp landscape as if strolling through a verdant, sun-kissed park, utterly untouched by the persistent drizzle.

Pearl, ever the diligent teacher, walked a little ahead, his gaze fixed on his young Dragonair, Ryu. He encouraged, gesturing with animated enthusiasm, "Alright, Ryu! Remember what we practiced!"

*Swooosh*

Above them, Azure's Dragonite performed a majestic aerial ballet, executing a series of powerful Dragon Dances that demonstrated the sheer elegance and power of flight. Ryu, still a nascent flier, attempted to mimic the larger dragon's movements, her serpentine body undulating gracefully as she tried to catch the currents.

*Wooosh-Thump*

A soft whoosh followed by a less-than-graceful thump indicated her progress, but Pearl was quick with praise, "Almost! Keep at it, you'll get there!"

Platinum, meanwhile, walked beside Azure, a serene smile on her face. Perched delicately on her shoulder, her Bellossom swayed gently, its flower petals rustling like miniature skirts.

Platinum's fingers gently brushed the Bellossom's head. She cooed, her voice a soft melody, "You were truly magnificent, Bellossom. Defeating Wake's Quagsire was a display of incredible finesse. I knew you could do it."

Bellossom let out a happy little cry, basking in the warmth of its trainer's adoration, "Belle-belle! Ossom!"

Further back, the ever-relaxed Diamond was enjoying the unique transport of his Tropius, Branch. He lay sprawled comfortably on her broad, leafy back, munching on a freshly baked Poffin.

Beside him, his Munchlax, Lax, who had grown surprisingly agile despite his bulk, demonstrated aerial maneuvers. Diamond mumbled around a mouthful, gesturing vaguely, "Okay, Branch, watch Lax! See how he uses his momentum?"

Lax, with a surprising burst of agility, leaped from Branch's back, performing a clumsy but determined mid-air somersault before landing softly. Branch, still getting used to the idea of flying, gave a hesitant cry, "Tropi? (Are you sure about this?)."

The odd lesson continued, a testament to Diamond's unconventional, yet often effective, training methods. The journey through the southern mire of Route 212 felt both long and surprisingly swift, guided as they were by Azure's meticulous planning.

Then, as if crossing an invisible threshold, the landscape shifted. The constant rain gave way to a gentle breeze, carrying the faint scent of sun-baked earth. The verdant canopy overhead thinned, allowing shafts of golden sunlight to pierce through, dappling the forest floor.

They had reached the northern section of Route 212, a stark contrast to the misty wetlands they had just traversed. The air grew warmer, the ground firmer beneath their feet, and the persistent dampness became a memory.

Azure announced, a rare, relaxed smile gracing his lips, "We're here!"

He gently patted Hisuian Liligant as he thanked her kindly, "Thank you, Liligant. You did excellently."

The flower-crowned Pokémon bowed its head gracefully before returning to its Poké Ball in a flash of red light. Then he brought out his next Poke Ball…

*Pop*

With a soft pop, a plump, pink Blissey materialized beside Azure, her kindly eyes blinking. He directed, and the Nurse Joy lookalike Pokémon immediately began to unpack a picnic basket with practiced ease, "Blissy, time to set up lunch."

Diamond, ever eager for a meal, instantly perked up. He declared, sliding off Branch's back with surprising speed, "Ooh, lunch! I'll help!"

He lumbered over to Blissey, ready to assist in any way he could. Platinum, not one to be left out, gracefully joined them, "Allow me to assist as well!"

*Pop*

She offered, already summoning her Altaria as she said softly, "Altaria, would you mind keeping an eye on the younger fliers?"

Altaria, a vision of cloud-like grace, chirped a melodious affirmation. Her majestic wings unfurled, and she ascended into the clear sky, joining Azure's Dragonite, Diamond's Branch, and Pearl's Ryu.

The sight of the four Flying-types—one a powerful guardian, another a regal mentor, and two eager students—circling against the azure backdrop was truly magnificent. The new lesson in the bright, sunny Northern Area began, a testament to the journey's continued growth and learning.

~Pearl's POV~

[Sinnoh Region, Route 212 (Northern Area)]

The aroma of sizzling food and the happy chatter of Pokémon filled the air, a delightful symphony of a well-earned break. Azure, Dia, and Platinum were already getting lunch sorted, Blissey humming contentedly as she prepared a spread that could feed a small army...

*Grumble*

My stomach rumbled in anticipation, but something else pulled at me. The northern part of Route 212 felt different, vibrant, and teeming with life, and I had this itch to explore, to see what new sights or perhaps new challengers awaited.

I said aloud, gesturing towards the bustling setup, "Looks like you've got this handled! I'm gonna go scout around a bit, maybe battle some local trainers. Be back in an hour or less!"

Dia, already eyeing a plate of freshly prepared sandwiches, gave a cheerful thumb-up. Platinum smiled warmly. Azure simply nodded, a knowing glint in his eye as he said, "Do be careful, Pearl. And return promptly for lunch."

With their blessings, I set off, a spring in my step. As I did so, 3 of my Poké Balls popped open, bringing my trusted companions.

*Pop*

My trusty Chatler, Chimler, and Herc materialized beside me, their expressions mirroring my excitement. Chatler, always vocal, let out a cheerful chatter-chat, bouncing on his feet, "Chat! Chatot on an adventure!"

The sun was warm on my skin, a stark contrast to the damp cold of the southern route, and the air here was crisp, carrying the sweet scent of wildflowers and distant pine. This was the kind of environment where adventures truly blossomed.

As we walked, Chimler sniffing at interesting scents on the forest floor and Herc flexing his powerful horn against a sturdy tree trunk, my thoughts began to drift. This journey… it was nothing as I'd ever imagined.

Originally, Dia and I were just a comedy duo, he the funny man, me the straight man, trying to make it big. Then Azure, the enigmatic 'Uncrowned Champion,' swooped in, recruited us, and suddenly we were part of Platinum's bodyguard detail, journeying across Sinnoh.

It was exhilarating, challenging, and profoundly fulfilling. But even now, I couldn't shake the question: Why us?

Why would someone of Azure's caliber choose two utterly unprepared, albeit enthusiastic, aspiring comedians for such an important task?

It was part of the ongoing mystery that was Azure Sky.

My thoughts then veered, as they often did, to Azure's Pokémon. His main team—Pikachu, Eevee, Gengar, Arcanine, Dragonite, Scizor, and the rest—was formidable, a testament to raw power and perfect training.

It made me think of my own father, Palmer. The Frontier Brain. The pillar of strength I'd looked up to my entire life.

I remembered my childhood, following Dad around the Battle Tower, watching him strategize, seeing the sheer joy and focus in his eyes during a battle.

He taught me so much, not just about battling, but about observation, about understanding the flow of a fight. The most incredible skill I picked up from him, one I'd been honing diligently, was the ability to predict a Pokémon's next move, to see the subtle tells, the weight shift, the flicker in their eyes that signaled their intent.

It was a skill that had saved my skin more times than I could count, and one I was actively using to help Platinum prepare for her Gym battles. Comparing Dad to Azure felt… complicated.

Dad was a legend in his own right, a revered Frontier Brain. Azure was the 'Uncrowned Champion,' a title that hinted at an even greater, untapped potential. If they were to battle, who would win?

My loyalty, my heart, screamed Dad. He was my father, after all, and to me, he was invincible. But the logical part of my brain, the part that had witnessed Azure's calm strength, his tactical brilliance, the sheer impossible power of his Pokémon… that part hesitated…

*Shiver*

I pictured the clash: Dad's powerful Rhyperior, Milotic, and his legendary partner Dragonite against Azure's Dragonite, Arcanine, and Pikachu. The sheer scale of it sent a thrill down my spine…

It would be a battle for the ages, a true spectacle of strategy and raw power. A new thought sparked then, a quiet ember in the back of my mind that began to glow brighter.

What if… what if I trained that hard?

What if, after helping Platinum fulfill her family tradition, I pursued becoming a trainer strong enough to stand on that battlefield, to challenge my father?

Not as a rival, but as a testament to everything he taught me, a demonstration of my own strength. The idea was exhilarating, a seed of self-discovery taking root. It wasn't just about helping Platinum anymore; it was about defining my own path, my own strength.

Suddenly, a series of urgent cries ripped me out of my deep reverie.

"Chatler! Chat! Chat!"

"Ch-CHIMLER!"

Herc let out a low growl, his antenna twitching. I blinked, my focus snapping back to the present. I asked, looking around, "What is it, guys?"

My gaze fell to my side, where my travel bag usually hung securely–My heart jumped into my throat. It wasn't there!

*Bdmp*

I exclaimed, realizing the alarm in my Pokémon's voices, "My… my bag!"

Panic flared, quickly replaced by a surge of pure annoyance. My entire supply of Poffins, my Battle Record, my spare clothes—all gone!

Who… or what…

*Trmbl*

Then I saw it. A faint trail of disturbed earth, a small, narrow furrow in the dirt path leading deeper into the woods.

A thief!

My blood began to boil. I declared, a steely resolve hardening my voice, "Alright, whoever you are, you're going to regret this! Let's go!"

My Pokémon, equally incensed, thundered after me. Chatler chittered angrily, leading the way, his sharp eyes scanning the ground. The trail led us through a dense thicket, past flowering bushes, and eventually to a small clearing dominated by a cluster of gnarled roots and a particularly large, suspiciously fresh mound of earth.

And there it was. A small, brown Pokémon with only its head visible above ground, its beady eyes darting nervously…

It was a Diglett, and clutched in its tiny paws was… my bag!

I sputtered, momentarily taken aback, "A Diglett?!"

Of all the Pokémon to steal my things, why a Diglett?

It looked so innocent!

But the evidence was clear. I fumed, taking a step forward as I demanded, "Give me back my bag, you little sneak!"

*Rmbl*

The Diglett, however, was clearly not intimidated. With a mischievous cry, it pulled my bag further into the hole, its head disappearing for a moment before popping back up, a defiant glint in its eye, "Dig-dig! (Come get it, bozo!)"

It was using the move Thief, no doubt. The little rascal!

I snapped, pulling out a Poké Ball, "Alright, that's it! Coco, it's showtime!"

*Pop*

With a flash of light, my Exeggutor, Coco, materialized. Her majestic palms swayed gently, and her three heads swiveled, assessing the situation. She boomed, clearly ready for action, "Exeggutor! (Okay, small rat! Prepared to get stomped!)."

I explained, pointing an accusatory finger at the cheeky mole Pokémon, "Coco, that Diglett stole my bag! It's hiding in its hole, using Dig! We need to get it out!"

*Swooop*

The Diglett, apparently sensing the impending battle, shot back into its hole with a quick swoop. I muttered, remembering my father's lessons, "It's going to use Dig to try and evade us. It'll pop up somewhere else to attack or make a getaway. Coco, anticipate its movements! Use Energy Ball!"

*Shiii*

Coco's middle head began to glow with verdant energy, a swirling orb of natural power forming between its fronds. The ground around us remained still for a moment, then a faint tremor could be felt...

*Rmbl*

It was subtle, but I felt it, almost subconsciously. A slight shift in the earth just to the left of the main hole, roughly five meters away… There!

I shouted, pointing sharply, "Coco, left! Now!"

*PEW*

Just as the Energy Ball launched, a small brown head of the Diglett burst from the ground, ready to scurry away. It cried out, surprised by Coco's precision, "Diglett!"

*WHAM*

The Energy Ball connected squarely with the Diglett, sending it tumbling backwards with a surprised squeak. It looked dazed, but quickly recovered, shaking its head and burrowing back down.

*Swooop*

I urged, my focus sharpened as my eyes hardened, "Good job, Coco! Now, it'll try to play cat and mouse! Stay vigilant!"

This was exhilarating, applying what I knew in a real-time situation, predicting the opponent. I could feel my father's presence, his lessons guiding my instincts.

*Swooop*

The Diglett was fast, popping up here, then there, trying to confuse Coco. It would appear, let out a defiant dig-dig, and then vanish again before Coco could fully lock on.

I observed, my eyes darting, trying to read the slight disturbances in the ground, the minute vibrations as I commanded, "It's trying to wear us down, make us lose focus! Don't let it, Coco! Keep a wide area of effect! Energy Ball, scattered!"

*PEW*

Coco understood. Instead of a single, concentrated orb, her heads glowed, and she fired several smaller, but still potent, Energy Balls in quick succession, peppering the ground around the main hole.

*WHAM*

The Diglett, caught off guard by the barrage, found its escape routes limited. It popped up, tried to burrow back down, but one of Coco's Energy Balls caught it mid-re-entry. It cried out again, a little weaker this time, "Digggggg!"

*Swooop*

It started burrowing again, but this time, I noticed a pattern. It was trying to circle back to its original hole, using it as a central hub.

Clever, but predictable if you know what to look for!

I grinned, figuring out Diglett's deal as I commanded, "Coco! Aim for its primary exit point! It's going to surface there again, but this time, hit it with everything! Charge up a powerful Energy Ball!"

*Shhhhh*

Coco's three heads focused, the raw power of the attack building, crackling with green energy. The ground trembled again, and sure enough, the Diglett's head emerged from its original hole, looking a bit worse for wear, but still defiant.

It shot a glance at its bag, as if debating another grab. But I didn't allow it as I yelled, "NOW, COCO!"

*FWOOMP*

A massive, glowing Energy Ball rocketed towards the Diglett. There was no escaping this one. The Diglett barely had time to react before it was engulfed in the vibrant green energy, "Diiiiiggg…lett… (NOooooooooo…)"

*WHAM*

*Thud*

The blast sent the Diglett backwards, landing with a soft thud a few feet away, its eyes spiraling in unconsciousness. I cheered, rushing forward, praising Coco, "Yes! Alright, Coco, great job! That was awesome!"

Coco gave a proud cry, "Exeggutor! (Heh. What did you expect?)"

I knelt beside the unconscious Diglett, my bag lying next to it. I gently nudged it with my finger. I scolded, but there was a hint of amusement in my voice, "You little thief! That'll teach you to steal from travelers!"

As I reached for my bag, something small and round clinked against the dirt. An empty Poké Ball. It must have fallen from my pocket during the chase.

A sickening realization dawned on me as I watched, frozen in horror, as the Poké Ball rolled, ever so slowly, towards the unconscious Diglett.

No. No, no, no, no!

My hand shot out, but it was too late. The Poké Ball touched the Diglett.

OH NO!!!

*Wiggle*

*Wiggle*

*BON*

A soft, triumphant chime echoed through the clearing. The Poké Ball glowed, then stilled. My jaw dropped.

My Pokémon froze. Chatler, Chimler, and Herc stared at the Poké Ball, then at me, then back at the ball, as if asking, 'Did that just happen?'

I stammered, utterly flabbergasted, "Wha… what just happened?!"

I, Pearl, had just accidentally caught a Pokémon. A Pokémon I had just scolded for stealing my bag!

I gingerly picked up the pristine Poké Ball, still warm from its new occupant. It felt… heavy. Conflicted. I couldn't just release it now.

The rules of Pokémon battles were clear: if a Poké Ball successfully captures a Pokémon, it's yours.

With a sigh, I pulled out my Rotom Phone, tapping it to activate the Pokedex. I held the Poké Ball up as it stated in a robotic voice, "[Diglett, the Mole Pokémon. A Ground-type. Diglett live about one yard underground, where they feed on tree roots. They sometimes emerge from the ground for air.]"

I stared at the screen, then at the Poké Ball. I muttered, shaking my head with a wry smile, "Well, Diglett… you certainly know how to make an entrance. And a capture."

I decided right then and there. It was unexpected, unorthodox, and utterly inconvenient, but it was mine. I said calmly, looking at the Poké Ball, "Alright, since I caught you Diglett, you need a nickname… Hmm… I'll call you… Digler."

Digler the Diglett. It felt appropriate.

Just as I finished, a familiar, excited cry echoed through the trees, "Draoooo! (There you guys are!)"

*Swoosh*

My Dragonair, Ryu, swooped down, followed by a mischievous grin and a bright red, floating form: Azure's Gengar. Ryu's voice, translated by Gengar's telepathy, rang in my mind, 'Pearl! Lunch is ready! Gengar says it's really good!'

Gengar floated closer, her ruby eyes sparkling. She asked, her voice a playful purr, "Indeed! And you, Pearl, look like you've had quite an adventure. What's that you're holding?"

I grinned, picking up my recovered bag as I explained, "You wouldn't believe it, Gengar! Ryu! Let's go! I've got something to show the gang!"

My unexpected new team member, Digler, felt surprisingly right. My earlier thoughts about getting stronger, about defining my own path… this unexpected capture felt like another step on that journey.

One step closer to challenging my father… one day.

With a light heart and a new Poké Ball securely in my belt, I raced back towards the campsite, eager to share the story of my accidental capture and the newest, most mischievous member of my ever-growing team. The journey was full of surprises, and I was ready for more.
