Chapter 485 - Chapter 485: I Challenge Thee!

Chapter 485: I Challenge Thee!

~Third POV~

[Sinnoh Region, Next Day, Route 215]

The crisp morning air of Route 215 bit gently, carrying the scent of pine needles and damp earth. A faint, rhythmic clink-clink echoed from the heart of their makeshift camp, followed by the comforting aroma of freshly prepared food.

Inside the largest tent, Platinum, heiress to the prestigious Berlitz clan, stirred from her slumber. Her Prinplup, a regal female, let out a soft coo from her own Poké Ball, sensing her trainer's awakening.

Outside, Azure was already up. His partner Pikachu, a loyal spark of yellow energy, was perched on his shoulder, giving a contented pika-pika as Azure stirred a pot over a crackling fire.

Eevee, his other steadfast companion, sat patiently by his feet, her large brown eyes fixed on the cooking. From the breast pocket of Azure's jacket, a tiny Pichu (Mew) occasionally peered out, observing the morning ritual with an intelligent glint in its eyes before snuggling back into the warmth.

Azure murmured, offering a soft smile to the pink, egg-wielding Pokémon who was expertly flipping pancakes on a large griddle, "Morning, Blissey…"

Blissey, one of his bodyguard lineup, responded with a cheerful cry, her movements surprisingly nimble for her size, "Blissei! (Morning! Here, let me help!)"

Ursaluna, another formidable member of his security detail, was already patrolling the perimeter of their camp, her massive form a silent, imposing guardian against any unseen threats lurking in the pre-dawn shadows. Absol, ever vigilant, sat atop a nearby rock, its horn glowing faintly as it scanned the horizon for signs of impending misfortune – or simply, anything out of the ordinary.

Soon, Diamond and Pearl, the other two Sinnoh Dex Holders, began to emerge from their smaller tents. Diamond, ever the enthusiast for food, was drawn by the aroma like a Combee to nectar.

His Munchlax, Lax, was already waddling out, nose twitching. Pearl, his perpetually energetic counterpart, stretched with an audible crack, his Chatot, Chatler, mimicking the sound with a squawk.

Diamond exclaimed, his eyes gleaming, "Mmm, something smells amazing! Oh, good morning, Azure!"

Lax let out a delighted Munchlax! and immediately positioned himself expectantly, "Munchlax! (Yes! Breakfast!)"

Azure replied with a chuckle, scooping fluffy pancakes onto plates, "Just a simple camp breakfast. Blissey's specialty. Plenty for everyone."

Platinum emerged catching the first rays of sunlight. She carried herself with an air of refined grace, even in the wilds of Route 210. She greeted, her voice calm and clear, "Good morning, everyone."

She glanced at Azure, a hint of curiosity in her eyes as she added, "It appears you've been up for some time, Azure."

Azure said simply, handing her a plate piled high with Blissey's pancakes, garnished with foraged berries, "Always in the mornings when you're traveling. The wilds don't wait for late risers."

Pikachu nudged Azure's ear, a soft cry, "Pika? (Can I get mine first?)."

As if asking for his share. Eevee let out a small whine. Azure chuckled, reaching into his bag for a special blend of Pokémon food he'd prepared as he replied, "Alright, alright, you two. Pichu, you want some too?"

The tiny Pichu (Mew) popped its head out, a barely audible mew! escaping its lips before it thought better of it and just gave a cheerful cry, "Pichu! (Yes! Free food!)"

As they ate, the atmosphere was relaxed, a stark contrast to the serious nature of their journey. Pearl began, biting into a berry, "So, Azure… What's the plan for today? Veilstone City, right?"

Azure confirmed, watching Blissey gracefully serving tea, "That's the goal. Route 210 leads directly to it. We'll make good time if we keep a steady pace. Possibly reach it by the end of the day or possibly sooner if nothing comes up."

Diamond, finished with his first stack of pancakes, was already reaching for a second as he stated excitedly, "Awesome! I've heard Veilstone has some great Poffin shops!"

Lax, beside him, was already nodding vigorously. Platinum politely dabbed her mouth with a napkin as she added, "While sustenance is important, Diamond, our primary objective is to reach Mt. Coronet. Veilstone City is merely a waypoint."

Azure cast a glance at Platinum, a faint smirk playing on his lips as he replied, "A waypoint with a gym, the Galaxy Veilstone Building, and a Department Store. Plenty of growth opportunities, Platinum. For all of us. Plus, we can only hope the Psyduck blocking the path would end soon, but for now, we can just enjoy traveling the Region till then."

He knew Platinum, despite her noble upbringing, harbored a deep desire to learn and excel as a trainer, a trait he respected. After breakfast, Blissey and Ursaluna efficiently packed up the camp.

With a final check of their gear, the group resumed their march down Route 210. The path quickly narrowed, winding through dense patches of tall grass and thickets of trees. Wild Pokémon sounds filled the air – the chirps of Starly, the rustle of Kricketot in the undergrowth, the distant cry of a Staraptor circling high above.

Platinum mused, taking a deep breath, "The air here is so invigorating. It truly is a beautiful region."

Pearl agreed, Chatler perched on his shoulder, "Definitely! Though it feels a bit… too calm, if you know what I mean. Like something's about to happen."

His instincts as a trainer, honed by countless practice battles with his father, were often surprisingly sharp. As if on cue…

"KREEEEE!!!"

… a sudden flurry of furious KREEEEEEs! erupted from deeper within the forest, followed by the distinct sounds of razor-sharp blades clashing…

"SHK-CHING!"

"SHK-CHING"

… and the whirring of powerful wings. The group immediately halted. Pikachu's ears twitched, then flattened against Azure's head, a low growl rumbling in his throat. Eevee let out a sharp bark, her fur bristling. Even the tiny Pichu (Mew) peeked out, its usually playful eyes now wide with alert curiosity.

Diamond asked cautiously, instantly on guard, Lax standing protectively in front of him, "What was that?"

Pearl answered, his hand instinctively reaching for a Poké Ball, "Sounds like a Pokémon battle. A serious one."

Azure and Platinum exchanged a look. Azure corrected, his voice low, "More than just a battle. Listen to the cries."

"KREEEEEEE!"

A high-pitched, furious cry echoed, followed by a deeper, more strained cry, "KRRRR-AWK! (I'll take your position, old man!!)."

Platinum stated, her eyes narrowing as she pinpointed the sounds, "It's a Scyther swarm. And that sounds like a leadership challenge."

Diamond repeated, confused, "A leadership challenge?"

Azure explained, his gaze piercing the canopy of trees, "Among certain species, particularly territorial ones like Scyther, the position of leader is often contested. An elder Scyther, perhaps weakened by age, or a younger, ambitious one, will fight for dominance."

Platinum added, her voice tinged with a hint of solemnity, "The loser is usually exiled from the swarm. It is a harsh but necessary cycle for the strength of the group."

They pressed forward cautiously, Azure leading the way, his hand hovering over a Poké Ball. The sounds grew louder, culminating in a furious rush of air and a final, desperate KRRRR-AWK! followed by a triumphant cry, "KREEEEEEEEE! (I've won this, old timer!)"

Pushing through a thick curtain of leaves, they emerged into a small clearing. Before them, a large swarm of Scyther was gathered, their green, insectoid forms buzzing with anticipation and excitement.

In the center of the clearing, two Scyther were locked in a tense standoff. One, clearly younger and larger, with vibrant blades, stood panting, its chest heaving. The other, older, its green carapace scarred and duller, lay on the ground, struggling to rise.

The younger Scyther let out another victorious cry, then positioned itself over the fallen elder, its scythes gleaming menacingly. The elder Scyther finally staggered to its feet, swaying unsteadily. Its movements were slow, burdened by exhaustion and defeat.

*SHING*

With a final, mournful KRRRR-AWK, it turned and slowly, deliberately, began to walk towards the edge of the clearing, disappearing into the dense forest, leaving its former swarm behind. The younger Scyther, now the undisputed leader, puffed out its chest, letting out a series of triumphant cries, "KREEEEEEs! (See here! I've won against our elder as I'm the new leader of the swarm!)"

The swarm responded with their own chorus of cries, acknowledging their new alpha. Diamond and Pearl watched, a mixture of awe and pity on their faces. Pearl breathed, "Wow… That was… intense."

Diamond mumbled, genuinely saddened by the elder Scyther's exile, "Poor old guy."

But Azure saw something different. His eyes, honed by years of strategic thinking and an uncanny ability to spot opportunities, gleamed with a predatory light as he thought, 'The young leader is high on its victory. The elder, in exile. An opening…'

Without a word, Azure took a step forward, then another, calmly striding into the clearing, directly towards the new leader, Scyther.

*CRACK*

A twig snapped under his boot, loud in the sudden silence that had fallen over the swarm. The Sinnoh Dex Holders gasped in unison. Platinum hissed, her eyes wide with alarm, "Azure, what are you doing?!"

Pearl yelled, already reaching for a Poké Ball, "Are you crazy?!"

Diamond shouted, his face paling, "You'll get yourself attacked!"

The entire Scyther swarm instantly turned, their multifaceted eyes swiveling to focus on the intruder. A low, menacing hiss rippled through the group. Dozens of sharp scythes scraped and clicked, a symphony of deadly intent…

The air crackled with hostility.

Azure remained unfazed. Pikachu, perched on his shoulder, was no longer snoozing; his cheeks sparked faintly, a silent warning. Eevee, however, had simply settled onto Azure's head, yawning contentedly, as if completely at ease with the impending danger. And from his pocket, the Pichu (Mew) watched, a tiny, knowing smile playing on its lips.

Azure stopped a respectful distance from the new leader, Scyther, which was now bristling, its scythes raised in a clear challenge. He raised a hand, not in surrender, but in a gesture of calm greetings.

Azure said, his voice carrying clearly across the clearing, devoid of fear, "Greetings, noble Scyther. I am Azure Sky. I watched your battle with great interest. Your victory was decisive, your prowess evident. You are a worthy leader for this magnificent swarm."

The leader Scyther let out a sharp, arrogant, prideful cry, pointing one of its scythes directly at Azure. Azure's mind, processing years of Pokémon communication, instantly understood, "Scyyyy!! (Intruder! Leave our territory, human! Or face my blades and the wrath of my swarm!)"

The underlying tone was prideful, almost disdainful of this puny human daring to step into their domain. Azure smiled internally as he thought, 'Perfect.'

He replied, keeping his tone even, "Indeed. Your words are clear, New Leader. And they led me to a generous offer."

He paused, letting the statement hang in the air, allowing the Scyther's arrogance to brew. He straightened his posture as he declared, "I Challenge Thee! A Pokémon battle. If I lose, I will offer you and your entire swarm my finest provisions – enough to feast for days. My Pokémon will not harm a single blade of grass here. I will leave humbly."

The Scyther's eyes seemed to narrow, intrigued by the offer, yet still hostile. Azure continued, his voice dropping slightly, a subtle shift in tone, "However… if you lose, you will become my partner. You will join me on my journey to grow stronger, to see the world beyond these woods."

He let another pause hang, then delivered the bait, his voice laced with a gentle, almost mocking challenge, "… Unless, of course, the new, great leader of this swarm is truly nothing more than a coward, afraid to test its strength against a mere human's Pokémon, despite its recent, hard-won victory?"

The effect was instantaneous and explosive.

"KREEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

The leader Scyther shrieked, its body trembling with indignation as it thought pissed, 'The sheer audacity! To be called a coward by a human!'

*SHINNG*

*SHINNG*

Its scythes slashed wildly through the air, causing the leaves around it to flutter. It glared at Azure with utter disdain, its pride wounded beyond repair.

It cried out again, a commanding cry, "KREEEEE! (Stand down! His mine!)"

… and the entire swarm, as if on command, began to shift. They fanned out, creating a wide, empty circle in the center of the clearing. The message was clear: the challenge was accepted.

Azure mentally chuckled in his head as he thought proudly, 'It lacked the experience, the wisdom to see beyond the insult and recognize the trap. It was strong, undoubtedly, perhaps even stronger than the old leader it had just defeated, but strength alone wasn't enough against strategy and years of honed instinct.'

Azure murmured, reaching for a Poké Ball on his belt, "Excellent! Allow me to introduce you to your opponent."

*POP*

A flash of red light erupted, coalescing into a truly formidable Pokémon. Standing nearly eight feet tall, its grey, rocky hide rough and imposing, was an Alpha Rhyhorn. Its single horn, a massive drill-like weapon, shimmered faintly, and its eyes burned with quiet power. This was no ordinary Rhyhorn; it radiated the ancient, raw strength of an Alpha.

Rhyhorn let out a deep, guttural roar, shaking the ground slightly, "ROOAARR! (Alright! Who do I get to clobber first!)"

*RMBL*

It slammed its heavy foot down, sending a tremor through the clearing. The Scyther leader, momentarily taken aback by Rhyhorn's sheer size and presence, quickly recovered, its earlier indignation fueling its resolve.

It let out a sharp cry and charged, a green blur of speed and sharp blades, "Sccccy! (En guard, you beast!)."

Pearl exclaimed, recognizing the multi-hit attack, "Scyther uses Double Hit!"

Azure commanded calmly, "Rhyhorn, Protect!"

*FWUP*

Just as Scyther reached Rhyhorn, a shimmering green barrier instantly materialized around the Alpha Pokémon. Scyther's rapid slashes rebounded harmlessly off the shield – CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! – causing it to recoil in surprise.

Azure commanded, "Now, Rhyhorn, Sandstorm!"

*WOOOOSH*

Rhyhorn stomped its foot, and the ground around it erupted. A swirling vortex of sharp sand and pebbles materialized, rapidly expanding to engulf the entire clearing. The Scyther swarm recoiled, shielding their eyes. The leader Scyther, caught in the grit, winced, its speed momentarily hampered.

Azure's voice cut through the whipping sand, "Rock Polish!"

Rhyhorn, still standing firm amidst the sandstorm, began to glow with a faint, earthy aura. Its massive body, seemingly too heavy to move swiftly, began to lighten. Its movements, while still deliberate, took on an almost ethereal quality, as if it were gliding rather than stepping growing faster.

*WHOOSH*

*WHOOSH*

It circled, the aura intensifying. The leader Scyther, shaking off the effects of the sand, charged again, adapting its tactics. It darted around Rhyhorn, trying to exploit the Alpha's perceived lumbering nature.

*SHK-CHING*

It landed a glancing blow, a Quick Attack, on Rhyhorn's flank. Diamond gasped, his eyes wide, "Scyther's speed is incredible!"

Platinum noted, observing Azure's strategy, "Rhyhorn has high physical defense, though. It can withstand those attacks."

Azure confirmed, a faint smile on his lips, "Precisely! Rock Polish!"

Rhyhorn continued to move, its glowing aura now a brilliant sheen. Its circling movements became noticeably faster. The ground beneath it, churned by its powerful strides, seemed to smooth out, almost as if it were a skater on ice. Scyther, attempting to land another hit, found its target just a fraction of a second further away than before.

*WHOOSH*

*SWISH*

Azure ordered, "Strong Style! Smack Down!"

Rhyhorn, moving with surprising agility, lunged forward, sweeping its tail. A thick, heavy chunk of rock and earth materialized around its tail, imbued with raw power.

*THWACK*

It slammed into Scyther, sending the bug-type skittering back, momentarily dazed. Azure followed up, "Rock Polish!"

Another surge of speed. Rhyhorn was no longer just gliding; it was sprinting. Its massive legs, once slow, now pounded the earth with surprising rapidity. The Alpha's sheer momentum was building, making it a truly terrifying prospect.

Scyther, realizing its speed advantage was eroding, redoubled its efforts. It zipped around Rhyhorn, trying to land continuous blows.

*SHK-CHING*

*SHK-CHING*

It attempted a series of swift X-Scissor attacks, but Rhyhorn, with its increased agility, was now weaving and rotating, making the attacks less effective. Each blow that landed, though powerful, seemed to barely faze the Alpha Rhyhorn, absorbed by its thick hide and impressive defenses.

Pearl exclaimed, astonished, "It's eating Scyther's attacks like they're nothing!"

Platinum pointed out, her scholarly mind analyzing the battle, "Rhyhorn's Speed Stage is rising rapidly! Azure is using Rock Polish back-to-back to negate Scyther's natural agility advantage."

Azure's eyes remained fixed on the battle, reading every subtle shift, every minute movement as he commented, "Scyther is fast, yes, but it's expending a lot of energy trying to maintain that lead. Rhyhorn's endurance, coupled with its increasing speed, will eventually overwhelm it."

And then, it happened. Rhyhorn, imbued with a powerful +6 Speed thanks to multiple Rock Polishes, was no longer just matching Scyther's speed.

It was surpassing it. The Alpha Pokémon, a hulking mass of rock, was a blur of motion, dodging Scyther's attacks with surprising grace.

*WHOOSH*

*FWOOM*

Rhyhorn sidestepped an incoming aerial slash. Its horn, previously a static feature, now moved with incredible swiftness, matching Scyther's own.

The leader Scyther, its arrogance replaced by a growing desperation, let out a frustrated cry, "SCYTHER!!! (Why can't I hit you! Why won't you fall!!)."

It couldn't land a solid hit, and every dodge by Rhyhorn drained its stamina. Azure commanded, his voice ringing with authority, "Now, Rhyhorn, let's end this battle. Strong Style! Drill Run!"

Rhyhorn charged, "ROOAARR!"

*ZOOOOM*

Its massive horn began to spin, glowing with an intense, coppery light. It moved with the force of a battering ram and the precision of a drill. Scyther, exhausted, tried to evade, but Rhyhorn was too fast, too powerful.

*BZZZZZZZZZ*

*CRUNCH*

The spinning horn slammed into Scyther's abdomen with devastating force. A sickening CRACK echoed through the clearing as the bug-type cried out in pain, a sharp, gasping cry, "SCYYYYYYTHER!!!!"

Scyther was sent flying, tumoring across the ground, before landing unconscious against a tree trunk. Its proud scythes lay limp and dull.

The entire swarm let out a collective hiss of dismay, then fell silent. The new leader, their champion, had been decisively defeated.

Azure walked calmly towards the fallen Scyther, pulling out a standard Poké Ball. He tapped it against the bug Pokémon's forehead.

*CLICK*

*WOBBLE*

*WOBBLE*

*BON*

… The Poké Ball flashed, confirming the capture. He clipped it to his belt, a satisfied smirk brushing his lips.

Azure praised, retracting his Alpha Pokémon with a flash of red light, "Well done, Rhyhorn. You were magnificent."

He turned back to the stunned Sinnoh Dex Holders. Platinum, Diamond, and Pearl were speechless, their jaws practically on the forest floor. They had just witnessed a masterclass in battle strategy, a lumbering tank turning into a lightning-fast warrior.

Diamond was the first to find his voice, his eyes still wide as he gazed at the leaderless swarm, now milling about in confusion. He asked, a hint of concern in his voice, "But… but what happens to them now? They don't have a leader anymore."

Azure glanced at the swarm, then back at Diamond, a pragmatic glint in his eyes. He said casually, shrugging slightly, "Don't worry too much, Dia. Nature abhorred a vacuum. They'll either have a new leader by tomorrow, or the old leader might return to reclaim its position now that the ambitious upstart is gone."

He gestured to the Poké Ball at his hip as he added knowingly with a smug expression, "They're not going to be extinct any time soon. It's just how life works, a constant cycle of challenge and adaptation."

*Rustle*

As if on cue, a rustling in the deeper part of the forest drew their attention. The bewildered Scyther swarm looked up, their many eyes fixated on the movement. From the same direction the exiled elder Scyther had taken earlier, it slowly re-emerged.

Its posture was still weary, but its eyes held a spark of renewed determination. It had seen the battle, understood the defeat of its challenger. With a quiet cry, it slowly walked back into the clearing, "Scyther…! (Your wise Elder has returned!)."

The swarm, lost and seeking guidance, instantly recognized its former leader. A ripple of recognition, then relief, passed through them. They clustered around the elder Scyther, nudging it gently, their cries now softer, more respectful.

The cycle had indeed come full circle, faster than even Azure had anticipated. The elder, having proven its resilience and observed its challenger's defeat, had its chance to lead once more.

Diamond and Pearl let out audible sighs of relief. Diamond breathed, "Oh, thank goodness. He's back!"

Pearl grinned as he added, "Yeah, I guess you were right. Nature finds a way."

Azure chuckled at their antics, shaking his head. He pulled out the newly captured Scyther's Poké Ball as he began to check its status window with his ability. The screen glowed, displaying the data.

Azure's grin widened. He muttered to himself, a low, satisfied hum escaping his lips, "Well, well, well… Steadfast, huh? This one will learn quickly. This journey just got a whole lot more interesting."

With their new, if unconscious, companion secured, the group turned to continue their trek, the sounds of the re-established Scyther swarm fading behind them as they pressed onwards toward Veilstone City. Azure grinned as he had a training plan in mind for his new Scyther…
