Chapter 484 - Chapter 484: The Grind is Real!

Chapter 484: The Grind is Real!

~Third POV~

[Sinnoh Region, Later, Route 210]

As the group continued forward, their first encounter came swiftly. A Youngster, sporting a bright red cap and an even brighter grin, spotted them from behind a patch of tall grass. He challenged, striking a pose, "Hey, you! A Pokémon battle, right here, right now!"

Azure said calmly, "Looks like our first test. Magby, Elekid, let's go."

*POP*

With two flashes of light, the fiery Magby and the electrified Elekid appeared, ready for action. The Youngster exclaimed, somewhat intimidated but also excited, "Whoa, rare Pokémon! Alright then! Go, Staravia and Machop!"

*Pop*

A Staravia burst from its Poké Ball, soaring into the air. While a muscular fighting-type Machop appeared.

Azure commanded, "Magby, use Smog! Elekid, Thunder Shock!"

Magby opened its beak, and a burst of dark, noxious smoke billowed towards Machop. The Youngster countered, "Dodge Staravia! Detect Machop!"

*FWOOSH*

Unfortunately, the bird Pokémon screeched as it got caught in the haze. Machop dodged in time, however…

*ZZZAP*

Simultaneously, Elekid extended its arms, and a bolt of crackling yellow electricity shot towards both Pokémon. Staravia, still disoriented by the Smog, took the full force of the attack, shuddering violently.

Machop grits its teeth as it has been paralyzed. The Youngster yelled, but the Pokémon was reeling, "Staravia, Quick Attack! Machop Bullet Punch!"

Azure followed up, "Magby, Ember! Elekid, Low Kick!"

*Ssssss*

Magby spat a small but potent fireball!

*BOOM*

It struck Staravia squarely as it fell to the ground. Before Machop could recover, Elekid, with surprising agility, darted forward, grabbed one of Machop's legs, and hoisted it up, throwing it hard to the ground.

*THUD*

The combined attacks were too much for the two. Staravia and Machop spun weakly before collapsing, faint.

The Youngster frowned, a mix of disappointment and awe on his face as he exclaimed, "Wow, you guys are strong! Your Pokémon are amazing!"

Azure praised, recalling them as he replied to the Youngster, "Good work, Magby, Elekid. That's valuable experience. And good work, Youngster."

He then turned to his companions as he asked curiously with an amused tone, "Alright, who's next for a round?"

Pearl eagerly stepped forward as he declared excitedly, "Me! Me! Let me at 'em! Tauler, Rayler, you're up!"

He sent out his Alpha Tauros and Luxray, both radiating power. Another trainer, a female Ace Trainer this time, emerged, observing their group as she said confidently, "Well, well, well, a powerful looking group. I accept your challenge, young man. Go, Bronzor, Vespiquen!"

*CLANG*

*BUZZZ*

A metallic Bronzor floated defensively, and a majestic Vespiquen with its Combees Guard Pokémon swarmed around it, flying with dignified purpose. Pearl roared, his enthusiasm catching, "Tauler, use Headbutt on Bronzor! Rayler, Wild Charge on Vespiquen!"

*ZOOOM*

Tauler, a behemoth, surged forward with incredible speed, a primal bellow roar escaping its throat, "RAUUURR!!"

Its head glowed with energy as it slammed into Bronzor!

*CRASH*

The metallic Pokémon was sent skittering back, a dent appearing on its surface. Rayler, meanwhile, was a blur of blue and black.

*ZZZZZZAP*

*THWACK*

Electricity crackled around its fangs as it launched itself at Vespiquen, impacting with a powerful smack. Vespiquen shrieked as the electric shock visibly stunned it, momentarily scattering its Combees.

The Ace Trainer countered, "Vespiquen, Power Gem! Bronzor, Gyro Ball!"

Vespiquen retaliated, firing glittering shards of energy!

*SHING*

*SHING*

Rayler barely dodged, a few gems scraping its fur. Bronzor, meanwhile, began to spin rapidly, turning into a metallic blur as it launched itself at Tauler.

Pearl yelled, "Tauler, Counter!"

Tauler didn't flinch. As Bronzor spun closer, the Alpha Tauros lowered its head…

*SMASH*

… then with a mighty SMASH! used its formidable horns to bat Bronzor away like a toy!

*CLANG*

*BOING*

Bronzor bounced off a nearby tree before returning to its trainer, severely bruised. Pearl commanded, "Rayler, now! Thunder Fang!"

Rayler moved quickly, sinking its powerful jaws into Vespiquen's wing!

*CHOMP*

Vespiquen cried out in pain, its struggles weakening. The battle raged for a few more minutes, with Pearl's powerful Pokémon eventually securing the win, showcasing Tauler's raw, untamed strength and Rayler's agility and electric might.

Both Pokémon were breathing hard but looked satisfied. Azure complimented, offering a nod of approval, "Excellent work, Pearl. Tauler's obedience is improving, and Rayler is adapting well to its new form."

Pearl pumped his fist, grinning at his Pokémon as he proudly explained, "Yeah! We totally aced that! See, Tauler? You got this!"

Tauler let out a grunt of affirmation, "Mooo! (It was close enough…)."

Rayler merely rolled its eyes at Tauler's attitude but wore a competitive smirk. Next up was Diamond to challenge any trainer next.

His easygoing demeanor belied a surprising strategic mind. He announced, sending out his newly evolved Clefable and the eerie Duskull, "Alright, our turn, Celeste, Hush! Let's have a relaxing battle!"

Eventually, they encountered their next opponent. Their opponent was a Pokémon Breeder, who smiled warmly as she greeted them, "What an interesting duo! Let's see how strong you are. Go, Roselia, and a freshly hatched Budew!"

*BLOOP*

*FWOOSH*

A fragrant Roselia and a tiny, adorable Budew appeared. Diamond instructed softly, "Celeste, use Magical Leaf! Hush, Shadow Sneak!"

Celeste, with new grace, waved her arm, and a flurry of glowing, razor-sharp leaves shimmered into existence, homing in on Roselia!

*SWISH*

*SWISH*

Roselia wilted slightly from the barrage. Hush, meanwhile, vanished into its own shadow as the Breeder commanded, "Roselia, Mega Drain on Clefable! Budew, Sleep Powder on Duskull!"

Roselia extended a vine, attempting to sap Celeste's energy. But Celeste, wise in her new form, easily floated out of the way, her movements fluid.

*THWUMP*

Suddenly, Hush reappeared directly behind Budew, a chilling whoosh announcing its presence. It delivered a ghostly jab. Budew let out a startled cry and fainted instantly, too young and small to withstand the hit.

Diamond praised Hush, seeing how strong his Ghost Type was, "Wow, strong little guy! Celeste, Dazzling Gleam!"

*FLASH*

Celeste's body began to shimmer, and a brilliant, blinding light erupted from her, encompassing Roselia. Roselia cried out, its petals drooping, overwhelmed by the Fairy-type energy.

It was weakened but not out. But The Breeder, seeing her Roselia severely weakened, quickly recalled it, yielding, "My, my, your Clefable is truly magnificent! I yield!"

Diamond cheered, patting Clefable's head, "Woohoo! Great job, Celeste! Hush!"

Clefable giggled, a sound like tiny bells, and Hush floated contentedly. Finally, it was Platinum's turn.

Her battles were always precise, a display of calculated elegance. She explained to her newest partner in a calming voice, "Swablu, you're up. Let's practice your evasive maneuvers and aerial attacks."

A female Collector, her spectacles perched on her nose, challenged Platinum. She smirked as she brought out two Pokémon, "A fine opportunity to study the grace of flying types! Go, Porygon, and a sturdy Geodude!"

*Pop*

A digital Porygon materialized, its blocky form twitching, and a rough-hewn Geodude hovered, flexing its stony arms. Swablue chirped at the challenge, "Chirp! (Heh. I alone am enough to take you down!)"

Seeing that Swablu wants to solo the 1 v 2 Platinum, she could see that her newest partner was very proud of herself as she thought calmly, 'It seems like Swablu wants to take them on by herself. Usually it would be a sign of foolishness, but… I must experience what it's like against a 1 v 2 situation!'

Engrossed with the idea of experiencing a 2-on-1 scenario, she focused on the battle. Platinum ordered, her voice calm and authoritative, "Swablu, Feather Dance on Geodude, then Aerial Ace on Porygon!"

Swablue bobbed her head happily, seeing her Trainer agree with her. Swablu, light and agile, zipped towards Geodude, releasing a flurry of iridescent feathers that swirled around the rock Pokémon.

*WHOOSH*

Geodude, distracted and entangled, felt its attack power drop. Before Porygon could react, Swablu darted with incredible speed, a streak of blue and white, and slammed into the digital Pokémon.

*BUMP*

Porygon glitched, its form momentarily distorting. The Collector commanded, adjusting her glasses, "Porygon, Psybeam! Geodude, Rollout!"

Porygon fired a multi-colored beam!

*FWOOSH-BEEP*

Swablu easily danced around it, its cloud-like body proving elusive. Geodude began to curl into a ball, gaining speed as it rolled towards Swablu.

*RUMBLE-RUMBLE*

Platinum instructed, "Swablu, use Sing to lull Geodude!"

Swablu let out a sweet, melodic song, "SWAA-WAA-LAA!"

The soothing notes washed over the charging Geodude. Its momentum faltered, and its eyes began to droop…

*Thud*

Soon, with a soft thud, it rolled to a stop and fell fast asleep, snoring gently. The Collector exclaimed, "Remarkable! Swablu's voice is enchanting!"

Platinum finalized, "Now, Swablu, finish Porygon with Disarming Voice!"

Swablu let out another beautiful, high-pitched cry, "CHIRP-CHIRP-CHIRP! (You foolish mongrels! Marvel at my impeccable singing voice!)"

This sound, however, was imbued with Fairy energy, striking Porygon with surprising force. Porygon glitched violently, then went limp, unable to battle.

*Thud*

The Collector sighed as she retired both Porygon and Geodude, wanting to have Pokémon in the Routes. The Collector announced, a look of respect in her eyes, "Your Swablu is surprisingly powerful for its size! And your strategy was impeccable!"

Swablu chirped proudly, landing gently on Platinum's shoulder, "Swaa-blu! (Hmph! As you should for a proud future dragon!)"

Azure praised, making a mental note of Platinum's growing competence, "Excellent work, Platinum. Swablu's command of its abilities is truly impressive."

Platinum smiled, praising her Swablue as he mentally thought, 'Her initial trepidation about battling had given way to a refined, calculating style. She's certainly growing the more she battles.'

The group continued their trek along Route 210. The path descended into a fog-laden area, the air growing thick and damp. The trees here were older, their branches gnarled and twisted, draped in clinging moss.

The atmosphere was eerier, quieter, save for the occasional drip of moisture from leaves or the distant cry of a Murkrow. Platinum observed, pulling her scarf a little tighter, "This fog is rather dense. It makes navigation more challenging."

Azure confirmed as he explained further, "Indeed. It's a common feature of this section of Route 210. It's also an excellent place for specific Pokémon to thrive. Elekid, Magby, and Togekiss, stay close. We'll stick together."

His hand instinctively went to his jacket, giving Pichu (Mew) a reassuring pat. Pikachu, feeling the subtle shift in atmosphere, bristled slightly on his shoulder, its cheek pouches sparking. Eevee, now sitting comfortably in the basket of Azure's arm, peered intently into the swirling mist.

They came across another trainer, a rough-looking Hiker, who emerged from the mist as if conjured. He boomed, challenging Pearl, "You kids got some strong Pokémon! My Pokémon are eager to test their might against such a formidable group!"

Pearl accepted in an excited tone, sending out his Monferno and Heracross, "Alright! Let's go, Chimlar, Herc!"

Chimlar, Pearl's Monferno, mirrored his trainer's fiery spirit, ready to battle. Herc, the Heracross, flexed its powerful horn.

*Pop*

The Hiker sent out a Machoke and a Graveler. The ground rumbled as the heavy Pokémon landed.

Pearl yelled in an excited voice, "Chimlar, Flame Wheel on Graveler! Herc, Megahorn on Machoke!"

Chimlar ignited its tail, transforming into a fiery Flame Wheel... As it spun directly into Graveler!

*CRUNCH*

Graveler cried out, the heat and impact rattling it. Herc, meanwhile, charged with an impressive burst of speed, its horn glowing, and slammed into Machoke.

*THWACK*

Machoke staggered back, clutching its chest. The Hiker roared, "Machoke, Low Sweep! Graveler, Rock Throw!"

Machoke swept its leg low, trying to trip Herc. Herc, however, was too agile, leaping over the attack. Graveler hurled a volley of small rocks.

*THWACK*

*THWACK*

Chimlar, still close to Graveler, took some hits but stood firm, its fur singed but its spirit unbowed. Pearl commanded, "Chimlar, Mach Punch! Herc, Close Combat!"

*PUNCH*

*PUNCH*

Chimlar unleashed a rapid-fire barrage of punches. Graveler couldn't keep up, groaning from the blows. Herc, meanwhile, engaged Machoke in a furious close-quarters battle, delivering a flurry of powerful hits.

*POW*

*BAM*

*CRACK*

Machoke, unable to withstand the overwhelming assault, eventually collapsed. The hiker desperately ordered, "Graveler, use Magnitude!"

*RUMBLE*

Ground tremors began. Pearl countered swiftly, "Chimlar, Mach Punches! Herc, focus on Graveler!"

*THWACK*

*THWACK*

Chimlar, with a burst of speed, delivered two powerful punches to Graveler's head. The ground tremor subsided as Graveler swayed unsteadily, then fainted. Machoke and Graveler were both unable to battle.

Pearl cheered, recalling his victorious Pokémon, "Alright! Another win! Chimlar, Herc, you were awesome!"

Platinum noted, ever analytical, "Pearl's raw power is quite effective. He certainly has a knack for engaging and overwhelming his opponents."

Azure agreed, a faint smile on his face, but whispered to himself at the end, without anyone listening, "He definitely has the spirit of a true trainer… although it could be his natural talent like his father…"

He watched the interactions, sensing the growing bond and trust within the group. These three Dex Holders, initially thrown together by circumstance and a bet, were slowly but surely beginning to operate as a cohesive unit.

As the day progressed, the fog gradually lifted, revealing more of the route's rugged beauty. They passed through patches of wildflowers, skirted a small, gurgling stream, and scaled a gentle incline that offered a panoramic view of the distant mountains. In the distance, the faint outlines of more urban structures hinted at Veilstone City.

Azure made sure to rotate his Pokémon, giving Monferno, Lucario, Gallade, Froslass, H-Liligant, and H-Alpha Zoroark some training time too, even if it was just for brief skirmishes with wild Pokémon or short practice matches against his main lineup Pokémon.

His bodyguard lineup – Blissey, Ursaluna, Absol, Darkrai, and Marshadow – remained out of sight, their formidable presence a silent assurance for serious threats. He knew the Sinnoh region had its own shadows, and while the current journey was for Platinum's tradition, his primary duty was her safety.

As the sun began its slow descent, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, the group found themselves approaching a small, tranquil clearing, perfect for a rest stop. Azure surveyed the area, ensuring it was secure as he declared, "We've made good progress today. Veilstone City isn't far now, perhaps another day's travel or 2. Let's set up camp here for the night."

Pikachu leaped off Azure's shoulder, stretching with a satisfied cry, "Pika! (Finally! I'm starving here!)"

Eevee yawned, then nestled closer. From Azure's jacket, a subtle mew was heard, quickly followed by the pichu-pika mimicry. The small Pichu's (Mew's) head poked out, its tiny eyes observing the fading light.

Platinum agreed, looking tired but content with her progress, "Good idea. My Pokémon could use a rest."

Diamond was already looking for berries, and Lax was already drooling as he exclaimed, "Finally, I'm starving again!"

Pearl, however, was still buzzing with energy as he exclaimed, "Another day, another step closer to our goals! We battled hard today, everyone!"

Azure smiled warmly as he began to set up dinner with Blissy, stating, "We're a team, Pearl. And every step, every battle, makes us stronger. That's the core of a Pokémon journey after all. But if you can help me cook with Blissy…"

He gazed at the evolving landscape before them, and the three young trainers, as he couldn't help but feel they reflected some past parts of himself. He smiled as he helped cook and casually taught them a thought, 'Having someone coming along for the journey… not a bad feeling. More fun to have people around.'
