After witnessing the tragic scene, Ava immediately called Mary. Her voice trembled with anxiety:
"Mary, something terrible happened at the company... Yong and Diana had an argument, and an accident occurred."
Mary asked worriedly, "An accident? Was Yong hurt?"
Ava replied in a choked voice, "Not Yong... but Diana suffered a severe head injury. An ambulance just took her to the hospital."
Shocked, Mary tried to control her voice, "What are you saying? Is it that serious? Where is Yong?"
Ava said, "He followed the ambulance to the hospital."
Mary quickly replied, "Okay, Helen and I will get there as soon as possible. Thanks for letting me know."
As soon as she hung up, Helen asked with a flushed face, "What happened? Is Yong okay?"
Mary replied with a sob, "Yes, Yong is fine. Apparently, an accident happened to Diana at the company. Ava mentioned that there was an argument between Yong and Diana before it happened."
Helen grabbed her purse in a panic and said, "What could have happened? I need to get to the hospital. Mary, notify Nicholas immediately."
Mary dialed Nicholas's number. At that moment, Nicholas was sitting on a bench in a park, his hands shaking violently from fear. When he saw Mary's name on his phone screen, he clutched it to his chest in terror and whispered, "No, not now, Mary... I can't talk."
He silenced his phone and shoved it into his pocket. At the hospital, Mary and Helen rushed to the ward. They saw Yong sitting slumped and distraught outside the operating room. Seeing them, tears welled up in his eyes, and he hurriedly hugged Mary: "I don't know what happened... I just saw Diana suddenly fall to the ground, and blood was gushing from her head."
Shocked by the severity of the incident, Helen and Mary tried to comfort him. Helen said, "Yong, don't worry, nothing will happen. Diana is a strong girl."
Yong slumped back onto the bench. Mary placed a hand on his shoulder: "We are here for you. Nicholas will be here as soon as he hears the news."
At the mention of Nicholas, Yong looked up, "Oh, I forgot... Nicholas!"
At that moment, Diana's parents arrived in a rush. Her father, his face flushed with rage, shouted, "You bastard! What did you do to my daughter?" He lunged at Yong, grabbed him by the collar, and growled, "Tell me, what did you do to her?"
Mary and Helen tried to pull Diana's father back. Her mother wailed, "Damn you! Ever since you entered my daughter's life, she hasn't had a single day of happiness."
Yong, pushed to his limit by the baseless accusations, shoved the father away and shouted, "All these disasters were caused by your own daughter! I'm sure you know everything too!"
Diana's parents stared at him in disbelief. Just then, two police officers approached Yong.
One officer said with a serious tone, "Mr. Yong?"
Yong replied, "Yes, that's me."
The officer said, "You must come with us to the police station for questioning."
Mary intervened anxiously, "Officer, his fiancée is in the operating room right now! Can't he come tomorrow?"
The officer replied, "This isn't just about giving a statement; he is a potential suspect."
Diana's mother screamed, "Take him away! Damn him!" She attacked Yong again, but the police held her back and led Yong away. Mary and Helen were left stunned.
Mary said, "Helen, you stay here. I'll follow Yong and try calling Nicholas again."
She got into a taxi and dialed Nicholas's number again, but his phone was off.
In the interrogation room, the detective asked Yong to write his statement. After he finished, Yong asked, "Can I go now? I need to return to the hospital."
Without looking up from the file, the detective said, "No, you cannot leave until Diana regains consciousness and we take her statement. You wrote here that you were by the door during the accident; do you have any witnesses?"
Yong paused, "Yes... I remember, I saw Nicholas right in front of the door at that exact moment."
The detective noted Nicholas's address and number. As he stood up to leave the room, Yong asked anxiously, "Do you have any news about Diana? Is the surgery over?"
The detective said, "Don't worry, they reported that the surgery is finished and she is out of critical condition." Yong let out a deep sigh of relief.
But as they were taking him to the detention cell, Mary managed to reach him and asked the officer in despair, "Now that you have his statement, aren't you going to release him?"
The officer replied, "The orders are from above; he must stay here tonight."
Mary turned to Yong, "Helen said Diana is out of danger." Yong added, "Please let me know if there is any news."
After Yong was taken to detention, Mary headed back to the hospital. On the way, Nicholas's phone finally rang. Mary said angrily, "Where have you been? I called you so many times!"
Nicholas said with an anxious voice, "What's wrong, Mary? Why are you so angry?"
Mary said hurriedly, "Diana had an accident at the company and is in the hospital. Yong has been accused and detained!"
Nicholas said in shock, "What? Detained? He didn't do anything!"
Mary said, "Helen and I are at the hospital, come here immediately."
When Mary arrived at the hospital, Nicholas arrived at the same time. Mary said sharply, "Why didn't you answer?"
Nicholas said with stress, "I didn't notice... How is she?"
Helen said, "She is still unconscious, we are waiting for the doctor."
The doctor came out of the room. Diana's parents rushed toward him. The doctor said, "She is out of critical condition, but the next 24 hours are vital. Due to the severe head trauma, there is a possibility of spinal cord injury and paralysis, but we cannot give a definitive opinion yet."
Diana's mother leaned against the wall, weeping. That night, Mary and Helen stayed at the hospital, but Nicholas went home; all night long, the scene of Diana falling and Yong's presence replayed in his mind.
The next morning, when Nicholas arrived at the hospital, Mary said, "Diana regained consciousness in the middle of the night. I thought you were asleep, so I didn't call you."
Nicholas asked eagerly, "Really? Can we see her?"
Helen replied, "The detective is inside taking her statement right now."
Just then, the detective exited the room. Helen ran toward him, "Detective, now that you've heard Diana's side, will you release Yong?"
The detective replied coldly, "No. According to Diana's statement, Mr. Yong pushed her, causing this incident."
Nicholas recoiled in shock, "What? Pushed her?"
The detective continued, "Because the statements are contradictory, Mr. Yong must remain in custody until the investigation is complete."
Nicholas, unable to bear it any longer, wanted to step forward and tell the truth, but just then, Diana's mother came out of the room and called out, "Nicholas... Diana wants to talk to you."
The detective looked closely at Nicholas and gestured to his colleague, whispering, "This is the same Nicholas we need to interrogate at noon today."
His colleague replied, "Yes."
Mary and Helen stared at Nicholas with faces full of doubt and fear; Nicholas looked at Diana's hospital door with trembling hands.
