'I did not think this through, ' I thought while looking at her eyes, which are so beautiful. They became even more attractive as they changed from grey to golden-yellow with narrow black pupils like a cat.
I could feel her skin through her t-shirt, damp with sweat from the workout. Her breath brushed against my face, and my beak wasn't helping. The distance between my beak and lip is short.
'Someone has to do something,' I thought as I opened my mouth to speak.
But before I could say anything, she pulled away and asked,
"Forget what happened?" With that, she left the room. I wanted to act, but she was already gone.
{Raven POV}
My name is Raven Darkhölme, and I am 17 years old. I have many insecurities, one of the major ones being my looks, due to my mutation. My natural skin colour is blue with scale-like overtones.
They say beauty is skin deep.
It's easy to believe when your skin isn't blue.
I've watched Charles walk through crowds, eyes lighting up when people see him. He doesn't even try — the world fits him like a glove. Meanwhile, I hide in shadowed corners, rehearsing smiles in the mirror, wondering if my eyes are too yellow… if my scales are showing. A moment of distraction would reveal my real face to the world.
Too alien. Too obvious. Too "mutant."
Charles says I don't have to hide, but the first time I let someone see me — really see me — they flinched. Even Charles himself flinched the first time he saw me.
So I wear a face they like — blonde, pale, soft. Human.
Pretty.
They look at me and see perfection. But it's not me. It's a mask I made to conceal the real me. Every compliment feels like a lie I told too well.
Boys have been interested in me before, but once I showed my true self to one, he screamed as if he had seen a ghost, which hurt me.
So when I met Hank, I thought I could relate to him. But even he flinched when he saw the 'real' me.
Today, I met someone who could transform into a weirder creature, but strangely, I felt more connected to him, though something happened between us.
'What was that?' I thought while taking deep breaths. If I had stayed there for a few extra minutes, we might have done something. I could still remember him feeling me through my shirt.
'But no matter how he feels about me now, it would change after he sees my real appearance. So I shouldn't get my hopes up,' I thought while heading towards my room. Just as I was about to reach it, someone was already standing in front of my room. As soon as he saw me, he said,
"Raven, are you free?" It was Hank who asked me. So, without much to say, I replied,
"Not Hank, Later." With that, I went inside my room and locked it so no one could enter.
As soon as I entered my room, I went straight to the bed and lay down, staring at the ceiling. All I could think about was how bright his eyes were. Although he wasn't human in appearance, to me, he looked cool. Is there something wrong with my standards? Until yesterday, I had a crush on Hank. But now...
'Ahh, just thinking about this is giving me a headache,' I thought.
'How am I going to face him tomorrow? Would he think something about me?' I started to overthink.
*SLAP*
I slapped myself to stop the overthinking.
'Somehow I wish I had kissed him, but it would be a bit weird to kiss his beak.'
'Though it's cute seeing him call out a nickname for his transformation,' I thought, not realising that a soft smile was slowly forming on my face.
