Chapter 63 - Rules We Bend.

The campus gates were locked, the silence of the evening pressing against them. Aanya exhaled, glancing at Aditi, who grinned knowingly.

"You do realize every time we do this, we risk detention?" Aanya whispered.

"Every. Single. Time," Aditi replied, linking her arm through Aanya's. "But that's the thrill, isn't it?"

They slipped past the shadows of the buildings, shoes crunching on gravel, hearts light in the golden haze of sunset. The river wasn't far now—the scent of wet earth and water guiding them forward.

"Do you know what I want?" Aanya asked, stepping over a puddle.

Aditi raised an eyebrow. "You always want something. What is it this time?"

"Quiet. Just… somewhere we can sit and do nothing for a while."

"Then the riverside it is," Aditi said, smirking.

"Though you owe me for dragging me into this late-night rebellion."

By the time they reached the water, the sky had burned gold and pink, reflecting on the gentle ripples. Aditi kicked off her shoes and perched on a stone, swinging her feet above the water. Aanya followed, sitting on the grass, letting the breeze tease her hair.

"Do you ever feel like some moments are too perfect to exist?" Aanya murmured, eyes on the horizon.

"All the time," Aditi replied. "That's why we steal them."

They sat there, laughing at nothing, teasing each other about past campus misadventures, sipping on the quietness of the evening.

Aanya felt the tension of the day ease a little—Sagnik's hug, the almosts, the restraint—she let those thoughts float in her mind, sweet and dangerous, without claiming her attention.

Eventually, Aanya's phone buzzed. She pulled it out, smiling faintly. Aditi's name flashed.

"Careful," Aditi said, leaning over her shoulder. "You might get caught thinking about him too much."

Aanya rolled her eyes, answering the call. "Hey, Sagnik."

"Hey," his voice said, calm, teasing. "I know you're up to something."

"You're lucky Aditi didn't squeal," Aanya replied lightly.

"She already told me you're dangerous," he said, laughter in his voice. "But I guess that's expected."

"Be nice," Aanya said, hiding the flush creeping up her neck. "We're… just having a normal evening."

"Normal?" he repeated, a note of mock suspicion. "Right. Okay. Carry on."

They ended the call, and Aanya tucked the phone away, leaning back against the grass as Aditi nudged her.

Later, as they walked back to the hostel under the deepening sky, Aditi pulled out her phone and sent Sagnik a playful text:

"You know, if you didn't act so oblivious, you'd know Aanya's stealing all the fun without you. Careful, she might keep it for herself next time."

Sagnik replied almost instantly:

"Tell her I'm onto her. But thanks for the warning, Aditi. You're officially my spy now."

They laughed quietly together, Aanya and Aditi, the evening wrapping around them like a soft, golden cloak. The playful camaraderie between all three was alive, light, and teasing, leaving Aanya with a sense that these fleeting hours—though complicated—were hers to savor.

The walk back to the hostel was quieter now, the river and evening golden haze behind them. Aanya and Aditi strolled side by side, shoes sloshing slightly in puddles, shoulders brushing occasionally. Aditi kept up a steady chatter—about classes, campus gossip, and the most ridiculous rules they'd ever followed—but Aanya's mind wandered elsewhere, amused by the absurdity of sneaking out at all.

She caught herself laughing softly at the thought of how careful they'd been all afternoon, and how ridiculous it was that the campus gates were always so strictly locked, yet here they were, bending the rules like they were tiny rebels.

Aditi nudged her with an elbow. "Earth to Aanya. You're spacing out again. Someone's at your mind's door."

"Shh…" Aanya whispered, though the corner of her mouth twitched into a smile. "Let me… enjoy the quiet for a second."

"Fine," Aditi said, teasing, "but don't tell me you're plotting your next escape already."

Aanya nodded, biting her lip. The weight of choice settled on her shoulders. One misstep, and it would all unravel. But she couldn't go back—not now, not after the day they'd had. The exhilaration, the closeness with Sagnik, the quiet thrill of rule-breaking—it was a tether she wasn't ready to cut.

She pulled out her phone, hands slightly shaking. "Cover for me," she murmured into the call, her voice low. "Tell them I didn't make it back in time… I—"

Aditi's teasing voice cut in, soft but sharp: "You really think I'm just going to cover for you and not enjoy this? You're mine to tease now, you know."

Aanya let herself smile, exhaling slowly. The danger lingered like a current under her skin, a reminder that every choice had weight. She slipped the phone back into her pocket and led the way toward Sagnik's place, each step measured, careful, and charged. The campus behind them felt distant, a line they couldn't—or wouldn't—cross again tonight.

Even the night air seemed to hum with restraint, the thrill of rule-breaking tempered by the understanding that some things—like the closeness they'd shared, the day's intimacy—were fragile. Dangerous to mishandle.

As she was walking down the alley which lead to Sagnik's place, Aanya's phone buzzed... A message from Sagnik.

"Spy Aditi says hi. And warns me that my favorite troublemaker is sneaking past campus rules. Care to confirm?"

Aanya bit back a laugh, typing a quick reply:

"Confirming. But don't worry, your favorite troublemaker is alive and well."

Almost instantly, another message:

"Alive… and plotting mischief, I hope?"

Aanya rolled her eyes, though a smile warmed her cheeks. She didn't reply right away, letting the tension hang between her and the darkening campus.
