Chapter 179 - Chapter 178: Distant Memories

The small room was lit by the ceiling's fluorescent strips, while the fading glow of dusk streamed in through the window, spilling across the floor. Shadows and light blended faintly, and the air carried a subtle fragrance.

Kitagawa Shizu sat on the sofa, cheeks tinged pink, shifting nervously as her eyes kept darting sideways.

There sat a handsome boy, dressed in simple casual clothes.

Her gaze, tinged with warmth, went unnoticed—Lin Mo's expression was solemn, his full attention fixed on the television. He paid no heed to the girl beside him.

The broadcast was the latest Night City news, the anchor's rigid face reporting accidents and updates. But there was no mention of the one incident Lin Mo wanted to see.

Awkward silence hung in the room. Shizu lowered her head, glancing at her home clothes: a loose T-shirt paired with a white plaid skirt. Her pale arms and slender legs would have drawn stares on the street any other day.

But since stepping inside, Lin Mo hadn't spared her a glance. After a brief greeting, he had simply switched on the TV and started watching the news—as if it were far more interesting than she was.

She had dreamed up all sorts of scenarios about what might happen when Lin Mo came over. But faced with this dull reality, with him glued to the news, disappointment gnawed at her.

While she wracked her mind for a topic to start a conversation, Lin Mo was lost in thought.

After last night's call with Kitagawa Hiro, and assigning him a small task, Lin Mo had remembered why the simulator's "bus accident" had felt so eerily familiar.

The trigger came during an international affairs class, when the AI teacher mentioned several megacorps. Since Moore Technologies' CTO was due to arrive in Night City soon, the AI introduced some background on him. That lesson had jogged Lin Mo's memory.

Before he ever crossed into this world, he had run two full life simulations.

In the first one, his life ended in a traffic accident—hit by a limousine while riding a school bus.

And the driver of that limousine had been Moore Technologies' CTO.

It had happened so long ago that Lin Mo had forgotten. Sixteen years had passed since he transmigrated. He remembered only the essentials—like Cyberpunk 2077's storyline. Trivial details had faded away.

Back then, he had chosen to "live" the second simulation, so the first had barely mattered to him. In time, he let it slip from memory.

Now, seeing the bus crash appear again in a sim log, no wonder he'd felt that rush of déjà vu.

"Guess old memories really can come back to bite you." Lin Mo gave a bitter smile.

Everything made sense now.

The accident couldn't have been a mechanical failure—it was deliberate.

As for motive? He didn't care. Monsters who would willingly ram a school bus full of kids didn't need reasons. Maybe for amusement. Maybe for a thrill. Maybe to test their custom ride's armor.

After class, Lin Mo had gone straight to Hiro's apartment, watching the news for any mention of the crash while waiting for Hiro to return.

If the perpetrator had chosen his victims deliberately, then blowing up the school buses wouldn't solve the problem. Even if he'd saved the students, the killer would simply pick another target.

So Lin Mo told Hiro to destroy the buses anyway, then scout the area. If any signs of a crash appeared, report back immediately.

"If I don't dig out your personal info after all this effort, then I'll have wasted my time."

His voice was cool as he muttered at the screen.

Thanks to the simulator, Shizu wouldn't lose her leg this time. But letting the matter rest? Impossible. He would uncover who was behind it.

Just then, the news ticker at the bottom of the screen flashed something that caught his eye.

It was almost brushed aside as irrelevant, scrolling by as text rather than read aloud, but Lin Mo spotted it immediately:

"According to reports, a bizarre incident occurred at Farstar High School in Westbrook. In the early morning, unknown individuals destroyed three school buses with explosives, forcing the school to cancel today's outing. Interviews suggest students believe the bomber was likely an alumnus acting in revenge. NCPD declined to pursue the case, citing no casualties and minimal property loss."

Lin Mo almost laughed.

"Didn't think Hiro would be so thorough. Out before dawn to finish the job." He was impressed. He'd only called near midnight last night, yet Hiro had gone out right after to handle it. Such diligence almost moved him.

"Lin-ge, what were you smiling about just now?"

Shizu had noticed the curve of his lips. Sensing an opening, she jumped in with a question.

Lin Mo shook his head with a mild smile. "Nothing. The news just reminded me of something funny."

Her eyes widened. Finally, a topic I can use.

Just as she was about to press further, the doorbell rang.

Her expression dimmed, like a scolded kitten. Forcing a smile, she stood up. "I'll get it."

She turned away, her face darkening as she walked briskly to the door and opened it.

As expected, it was her brother, Kitagawa Hiro, back at last. Seeing his sister's sour look left him puzzled.

Hadn't she always been eager for Lin-kun to visit? Why the long face now?

He couldn't fathom her moods, so after a few teasing remarks, he stepped past her and nodded toward Lin Mo.

Noticing the men had business to discuss, Shizu wisely kept quiet. With little enthusiasm, she said, "I'll head out to buy ingredients for dinner. You two can talk."

With that, she slipped out, leaving Lin Mo and Hiro alone in the apartment.
