Chapter 175 - Chapter 174: The Plan Before the Simulation

The deep night was cold and silent. At the manor perched halfway up the mountain, that sense of emptiness felt even sharper. The cool wind carried the damp scent of rain, seeping through clothes and into the skin, like someone blowing cold air straight beneath your shirt—it was hard not to shiver.

Rain, rare for the night, fell on the protective netting over the villa's second-floor terrace. The raised, arched glass dome covered almost every corner of the broad balcony.

On such a rare rainy night, Lin Mo lounged lazily on a recliner, gazing up at the heavens. The chill wind outside was kept at bay by the dome, while raindrops pattered on the glass above, streaking fine rivulets across the surface. The pitter-patter rang like an abrupt symphony—restless, yet never grating. His heart drifted with the falling rain into the depths of night, growing calm, and in that calm came drowsiness.

"Good rain," Lin Mo murmured in praise.

Taking advantage of the quiet, he pulled out the simulator, ready to begin the next day's run.

Ever since his call with Regina last Sunday, he'd more or less taken on her commission—

—to attempt an infiltration of the joint Arasaka-Moore research facility, and locate cyberpsycho test subjects allegedly being used in experiments.

Of course, when he accepted, Lin Mo hadn't overpromised. He'd merely mentioned he had a capable team that might be able to try. Confidence? Yes, but not certainty. Not enough to give Regina a guarantee.

Both sides knew the truth: the job involved Arasaka, Night City's reigning titan. No crew alive could promise one hundred percent success.

And Regina herself hadn't pushed him to act rashly. With intel still scarce, she'd urged patience, to wait until enough was gathered before making a move.

Still, Lin Mo couldn't just sit idle. With the simulator, he could preview the outcome of tomorrow's plan. Even if the plan was rough, even if intel was thin, the simulation would at least spit out results—unpleasant maybe, but useful. Somewhere in the narrative, there would always be something worth gleaning.

From Regina's intel, he knew the site was a large research facility in Watson's Arasaka Waterfront.

Details of its internal security? Unknown. But some things were plain: Arasaka had sealed the entire zone. After taking control, they'd ringed the docks with walls, cutting the Waterfront off from Watson's residents, scavs, and gangs.

Every month, hundreds of shipments came through, sorted and packed by automated drones, then sent on to Arasaka warehouses and outposts.

The research complex lay within that sealed perimeter, behind thick concrete walls mounted with motion sensors, auto-turrets, and electrified fencing. A fortress, through and through.

With defenses that tight, whatever lay inside was guarded just as heavily.

A tough nut, Lin Mo had muttered when he'd first looked at the intel Regina sent. Arasaka wouldn't fortify it like this without reason.

The land itself had been a "gift" from Night City's then-councilman, now-mayor, granted to Arasaka in gratitude for their aid during the Unification War. That alone put them above even Militech, their rival in every other sense.

So Lin Mo's first draft plan was simple: find a weak point in the perimeter. Infiltrate without killing guards if possible.

Once inside, have the hacker team breach the internal net—maybe even seize control of some of the security systems to aid the infiltrators.

If they found the cyberpsycho test subjects, then data would surely be stored nearby. Grab everything. Extract.

Three teams total: infiltration (led by Lin Mo), hackers (support from the shadows), and diversion (to hit the perimeter when it was time to leave, blasting the wall to draw the heat).

For the diversion, he'd even rehired Maine's crew, ready to bring the big guns if necessary.

In truth, it was a rough sketch, hardly worth much faith. He knew it would need serious refining.

But first, test it in the simulator. See what tomorrow's outcome would be. Gauge the odds.

When the plan felt airtight, he started the run.

[Simulation Start]

[The next morning, after last night's rainy reprieve, you wake surprisingly refreshed. Calm of mind, body at ease—you fall into rare, untroubled sleep and rise earlier than usual.]

Lin Mo skimmed it. Since the op was set for night, the sim's morning and afternoon was just fluff: playing the good student in class. Useless. He flipped past, eyes jumping to the night.

[After class, per plan, you lead David to Lizzie's Bar in Watson. The rest of the team is already waiting.]

[Maine's crew, too, has arrived early.]

[But because your summons was abrupt, prep time was short, and Maine has plenty of complaints.]

[Not just them—when Regina hears, she thinks you're insane. Setting the op for tonight, with so little intel, she does everything to dissuade you. Even if she respects your crew's skill, objectively the odds look grim.]

Lin Mo wasn't surprised.

He'd made sure to brief Sasha, Kitagawa, and the others beforehand, telling them—and Maine's crew—to keep their calendars clear, avoid other gigs, and be on standby.

To make it worth their while, he'd covered their "idle pay": a thousand eddies per day, just for waiting on call.

Getting paid to do nothing but sit tight? No one refused that.

So when "he" in the sim suddenly pulled them in with no prep, it was only natural they'd gripe.
