"Business?"
The ripperdoc looked surprised. He gave David a strange glance, then eyed Lin Mo with skepticism before guessing:
"You're not here to buy another stash of black-market BDs, are you? David, did you already sell off the ones I gave you at the Academy?"
He did have a bit of a connection with David, but nothing deep.
Back then, he'd only bothered with the kid because he'd found out David was studying at Arasaka Academy. That made him a convenient middleman—a third-hand hustler to push his bootleg BDs.
The cut he gave David wasn't much. If David managed to flip a few, the profit was barely pocket change—just enough for the boy to buy some dirt-cheap stock for himself.
That was the extent of their "friendship." When it came to money, this ripperdoc never gave an inch.
And now, this punk David had dragged in claimed he had "a big business deal" to talk about.
What a joke.
The ripperdoc didn't even bother to hide his sneer. He gave Lin Mo a mocking look, curious what this handsome kid thought he was going to offer.
But Lin Mo ignored the look, face calm and detached, tone level.
"This shop. Did you rent it, or buy it outright?"
For unlicensed "clinics" like this, Lin Mo preferred to call them shops.
"All mine. Years of work. And Santo Domingo ain't exactly the kind of place you rent prime real estate. Nobody in their right mind would pay to lease here. Better off scamming them into buying." The ripperdoc chuckled.
At this point, he thought he had it figured out.
This was just some Academy trust-fund brat David had befriended. The kid wanted a special BD, but didn't have the guts to say it straight. So he was dancing around with nonsense talk.
Lin Mo gave a thoughtful nod and looked around the shop.
It was tiny—barely the size of an average living room, counting the hallway outside.
That was the norm. Most ripper clinics weren't big.
The place was cluttered with junk and crates. The only real assets were a single surgical chair, some rusty tools, and a bunch of cyberarms hanging from the ceiling rig.
He glanced at the doc's arms. They bore ringed connectors and modular ports—so the arms overhead were just swap-outs he used mid-surgery.
Compared to Viktor, who only needed one precision cyberarm for everything? This guy was amateur hour.
"Customer," the doc said, noticing Lin Mo's wandering eyes, "you're not really here for implants, are you? If it's BDs you want, just say so. I've got the hottest black-market series right here."
He thought he had the boy pegged. Kids like this were too shy to ask directly. Easier to pretend to "discover" the stash, feign interest, then buy without embarrassment.
The doc smirked confidently.
"Flesh Horror,My Cyberware's Big and White,Edgerunner Nights. The wild stuff, the fun stuff—I've got stock. So? Which do you want?"
Lin Mo shook his head calmly.
Ah, so he's a tough one. A kink freak who won't admit it... The doc frowned, suddenly feeling like he'd met a worthy opponent.
"What about Rotting Alive,Feast of Worms,Shattered Heart?"
Lin Mo shook his head again.
The ripperdoc scowled. "Enough games, kid. What the hell do you actually want?"
"I want you. And I want this shop." Lin Mo said it as if it were an established fact.
The ripperdoc blinked. What kind of shady code is that? But Lin Mo's serious face told him it wasn't code at all.
When it sank in, the man burst out laughing, sharp and grating. He looked at Lin Mo like he was watching a clown stumble through an act.
What do you mean, 'I want you and your shop'? This kid's been rich too long—thinks everything's his for the asking.
"Listen, punk. If you're here to mess around, you can leave now. We've got nothing to discuss. And you—David—you need to pick better friends. This kid's missing a screw."
Still laughing, he dropped onto the surgery chair, ready to dive into another braindance. But then his laugh froze.
The corner of his HUD flashed an incoming deposit.
He sat there dumbstruck, like someone had hit pause. Slowly, he pulled off his scanner rig, sat up, and stared at Lin Mo with eyes full of shock.
"This is a down payment. Your shop's decent—I'll buy it. And you're staying here to work for me. How's that sound?"
Lin Mo strolled around casually, eyeing the tools like a man inspecting property he already owned. His voice carried the ease of a corporate shark closing a deal.
The doc glanced at his balance again. His chest tightened so hard he felt like he'd need a cyberheart to survive this kind of stress.
"But… I don't even have a medical license. Even if you take over, I can't cover for you."
His voice had lost its bite.
"I'm not opening a clinic. I'm buying the place. From now on, a woman will come by and give you instructions. You'll take orders from her. If you're in, you're in."
"As for the license—you'll find a way. Enroll in some crash-course, grease the wheels, whatever. One week. I want you certified in seven days."
Lin Mo leaned against the wall, hands in his pockets, relaxed.
"When I pay the rest, it'll be a fortune for you. But money's money—you never complain about having too much. Right?"
"So, give me your answer. Are you in, or out?"
The ripperdoc's grin spread wide, suddenly full of warmth, like he was a different man altogether. He didn't hesitate.
"I'm in, boss."
If a job paid well, gave him training, and pulled him out of this dump? Who'd say no? Only an idiot would.
"So what should I call you?" Lin Mo asked.
"Anything you want, boss. Doc, Sawbones, Quack—I don't care."
Lin Mo eyed the man's shock of silver hair and nodded.
"From now on, I'll call you Old Silver Bug."
